What is eWaste
eWaste refers to any discarded waste electrical or electronic equipment.
Basically anything that has a plug or runs on batteries. It includes all mobile phones, laptops, PCs, TVs and other electronic devices that have reached the end of their useful lives

Ewaste Facts
● Annual global eWaste production is pegged at approximately 50 million metric tonnes – Step Initiative
● India is expected to generate about 1.5 lakh tons of eWaste by 2020 - Manufacturers Association for Information Technology (MAIT)
● Barely 4% of the eWaste produced in India is recycled - ASSOCHAM● Over 95% of the eWaste generated in India is managed by the informal
sector - ASSOCHAM● More than 4.5 lakh child labourers are engaged in eWaste activities in

Present Scenario
● Currently, there isn’t any well-defined mechanism for collection and processing of consumers’ eWaste.
● As a result, a major portion of the country’s eWaste ends up in landfills or with the informal sector.
● Over 95% of the eWaste in India is handled by the informal sector.● These crude techniques not only release hazardous toxins into the
eco-system causing pollution, but also cause serious health hazards among workers.

An Initiative to manage eWaste
The CLEAN e-INDIA Initiative, launched by Attero and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), aims to establish an integrated eWaste Consumer Take Back Program to help ensure organized collection, management and recycling of electronic waste in a responsible and sustainable manner.
