E-resource with no wall and no firewalls

• We spend lot of money ….. Buy many things– Including eresources

• But E-resources exist on publisher servers • Not on library server (we do not have control)

• Print resources exist in library …, users does not come to library ….

• We establish server …, with many repositories – Users are not going through - library server– They go through Google - first point of search

When we look at the … Scientific progress• Progress is not just due to just more literature

or more research– More due to finding gaps and links to relevant

research• Gap and links are found through published

results

• Therefore – vertical division of web based information

• authentic scholarly content• Un-authentic ???? content

• Authentic research – using un-authentic information resource ????????????????

• At the same time -Users think about– Accessing content @ free of cost– Users @ not willing to pay

• Libraries are – identified as authentic sources• Therefore – Libraries are only place for them– Meets both authentic and free– Can serve information in all media

• In context of resources from librariesLibraries – are to compete --- Google

• Google is known for – Single and simple search box– Ranking of results– Users are sure of getting some free information

resources ---- may be authentic or not

• Libraries started – competing Google– With many web-scale discovery tools

• Google provide – – less of scholarly content (deep or hidden web)

• Web Scale discovery tools – More of scientific and scholarly information

• Web scale Discovery tools– Single point access to range of library resources– Single Index to all library content– Can be single point search for all kind of library

collection– Simple, fast search– Single list of search results (from all sources)– Relevance Ranked results

• Resources it cover includes– Library collection (print and electronic)– Local digital repository and archives– Online and offline

• Central Index– Pre-harvested Central Index(overcome – some of the problems of federated search engines)(Index based on library internal and external collection)

• Limitation of index based interface– Competing vendors

• Tools + technology + skillset – In library is getting standardized • To compete Google • Majority are algorithmic search in future

• Then more concern is about – Content, content, and content

• Otherwise tools and technology become– Empty container and
