1. About the Programme 1.1. The Bachelor of Elementary Education Programme

The Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) programme is a four-year integratedprofessionaldegreeprogrammeofElementaryTeacherEducationofferedafter theseniorsecondary (classXII) stageof school.This isabilingualprogramme,conceptualizedby theMaulanaAzadCentreforElementaryandSocialEducation(MACESE)oftheDepartmentofEducation,UniversityofDelhi.Launchedintheacademicyear1994-95,theprogrammewasan attempt towards fulfilling the need for professionally qualified elementary schoolteachers. B.El.Ed is designed to integrate the study of subject knowledge, humandevelopment, pedagogical knowledge and communication skills. Both professional andacademicoptionsareavailabletothestudentswhograduatewithaB.El.Ed.degree.

TheintroductionoftheB.El.EdProgrammeinundergraduatecollegesofUniversityofDelhimarks amove towards creationof a cadre of Elementary Educationprofessionals- a longawaited promise, beginning with the conception of the Central Institute of Education in1947. Through the B.El.Ed Programme, concerns of elementary education have beenintegrated into theUniversity system. It has also upgraded the professional status of theelementary school teacher by providing a university degree for elementary education. Atpresent,theprogrammeisbeingofferedineightwomencollegesoftheUniversityofDelhi.Theregulations,normsandstandardsfortheB.El.EdProgrammewerefirstnotifiedbytheNCTEintheGazetteof Indiaon20thMarch1999.ThelatestnotificationapplicabletotheprogrammeisdatedNovember2014.

1.2. B. El. Ed Graduates

TheB.El.EdProgrammeaimstoproducegraduatesofhighcaliberinthefieldofelementaryteacher education. The programme is intensive and focused to prepare teachers byproviding a supportive and stimulating environment. The programme is offered by selectunder-graduatecollegesofUniversityofDelhi.Over3500studentshavealreadygraduatedfromthesecollegessince1998.Agoodnumberof themhavebeenplaced ingovernmentand private schools as professionally qualified elementary school teachers. Others arepursuing post-graduate studies and research in disciplines like education, linguistics,psychology,languages,history,socialwork,sociology,mathematics,environmentalstudiesandpoliticalscience.ManyB.El.EdgraduatesarepursuingresearchineducationalstudiesinCentralUniversitiesandsomeofthemareworkingasteachereducators.GivenbelowaresomeoftheprofessionalandacademicoptionsavailablefortheB.El.Edgraduates:

• Teaching in elementary schools (Classes I to VIII): B.El.Ed graduates are eligible forappointment in MCD, NDMC, Sarvodaya Vidyalayas in Delhi, Kendriya Vidyalayas andNavodayaVidyalayasallacrossIndiaandalsoinprivateschools.

• Leading elementary school systems in various capacities like curriculum developers,contentdevelopersetc.

• Pursuing research in education and related disciplines in the government and non-governmentsectors.

• Pursuingpost-graduatecoursesandresearchstudiesineducationandrelateddisciplines. • Serving as teacher-educators in various State Institutes and University Departments/Collegesofferingtraininginelementary/secondaryeducation.

1.3. B.El.Ed Faculty and Academic Support

The B.El.Ed Programme offers an opportunity for students to interact and learn fromscholarsandfacultyfromdiversedisciplinesofeducation,psychology,sociology,linguistics,social sciences, biological and natural science, mathematical sciences and the languages.Theliberaloptioncoursesaretaughtbyfacultydrawnfromdifferentdepartmentsofeachcollege.However, the coreelementaryeducation facultyhasamajororientation towardsinterdisciplinary teaching. In addition, colleges draw upon the expertise of professionalsoutside theUniversity for specializedPracticumCourses suchas theatre, story-tellingandself-development. The Programme continues to be nurturedwith academic and resourcesupport from the Department of Education through seminars, public lectures and otherfacultydevelopmentprogrammes.

1.4. Programme of Study

TheProgrammeoffersbothcompulsoryandoptionaltheorypapers;compulsorypracticumcoursesandacomprehensiveschoolinternshipexperience.TheprogrammeisbilingualandclassroomdiscussionsareconductedinbothEnglishandHindilanguage.StudentshavetheoptiontowriteassignmentsaswellasexaminationsineitherEnglishorHindi.Thedifferentareasofstudyareasfollows:

1.4.1. Theory Courses

Thestudent-teacherisexpectedtostudynineteen(19)theorycoursesduringthefour-yearprogrammeofstudy.Theorycoursesincludestudythroughprojectsandrelatedfieldwork.ThetotalweightageofthetheorycoursesintheB.El.Ed.Programmeis1,250marksoutofanaggregateof2,200marks.

• Foundation Courses

Foundation courses offer an in-depth study of the process of child development andlearning;howtheeducationofchildrenis influencedbythesocial,political,economicandculturalcontextsinwhichtheygrow;techniquesandprocessesofschoolorganisationandmanagement;educationaltheory,issuesandconceptsspecifictoelementaryeducation.Inadditiontodevelopingtheoreticalconstructsandframeworksofanalysis,thesecoursesalsoaimtocultivateskillstobuildrelationshipsandtocommunicateasteachers.

• Core Courses

Core coursesoffer the student-teacher anopportunity to reconstruct concepts learnt inschoolandtointegratethemwithinamulti-disciplinaryperspective.Thesealsoformthefoundationforpedagogycourses.

• Pedagogy Courses

Pedagogy courses provide a study of pedagogical theory to develop skills specific to theteaching of young children.While developing perspectives in pedagogy, student-teachersalsolearnmethodologiesofteachingspecificknowledgeareas.

• Liberal Courses

Liberalcoursesofferstudiesinaspecificdisciplinewithacademicrigour.Theyaredesignedto enrich the knowledge base, to allow for further study in the discipline and in thepedagogiesinwhichstudent-teachersopttospecialize.

• Specialized Courses in Education

Theoptionalcoursesofferedinthefourthyearprovidespecializedsupporttothestudent-teacher.

1.4.2. Practicum Courses

These courses are designed to allow a variety of experiences with children within andoutside the elementary school. In addition, student-teachers acquire a wide range ofprofessional skills including drama, craft, developing curricular material, classroommanagement, systematic observations, documentation and evaluation. Practicum coursescarryatotalweightageof950marksoverthefouryearsofstudy.

• Performing and Fine Arts, Crafts and Physical Education TheseareintegratedintotheB.El.Edcurriculuminthesamespiritastheyshouldbeintheelementary school curriculum. They enable the student-teachers to experience andunderstand the learning process in a holistic manner, rather than confining it to the‘cognitive’domain.

• School Contact Programme

Thisestablishesthefirstcontactofstudent-teacherswithchildren.Whileinitiatingcontactwith elementary schools, student-teachers engagewith issues of planning and organizingcreative activities for children within the school. They also explore ways of organizingmeaningful interaction with children outside the school. Student-teachers get theopportunity todevelop theability to relate, communicateanddevelopapositiveattitudetowardschildrenandteaching.

• Observing Children Thisactivityisdesignedtohelpestablishacruciallinkbetweentheoreticalconceptsandground realities. Student-teachers engage with systematic observation and study ofchildrenindifferentsettings.

• Self-Development Workshops Studentssharpentheirabilitiesandlearntobecriticalandreflectivethroughaprocessofself-reflectionandanalysis.

• Story Telling and Children’s Literature Students understand the significance of children’s literature and storytelling in theteaching-learning process. They also explore various genre of children’s literature andlearn different techniques of storytelling. They build up a resource of stories andchildren’sliteratureforuseintheteaching-learningprocess.

• Classroom Management and Material Development

ThisProgrammebeginswithsystematicobservationsandanalysisofpedagogicpracticesin conventional and innovative settings. The student-teacher is facilitated to evolvepedagogicpracticesthataddresscrucialconcernsofclassroommanagement,designandchoiceofactivities,materialdevelopmentandevaluation.

• School Internship

Internship in schools forms a major component of the fourth year of the B.El.Edprogramme. Student interns actively engage in teaching elementary school children.Systematic feedback and evaluation is provided by supervisors. Functioning as regularteachers, the interns attempt to translate their knowledge-base and professional skillsintoreflectiveclassroompractice.

• Project Work

Student-teachersarerequiredto takeupprojectsbasedonthemesarisingoutof theirschool experiences. This enables them to acquire basic research skills of systematicobservation,documentationandanalysis.

• Tutorials and colloquia

An integral part of the B.El.Ed Programme, tutorials help student-teachers to buildconnectionsbetweentheory,observationsandclassroomteaching.Student-teachersareexpected to participate in discussions in the classroom. Through various activities,students are exposed to various important aspects of teaching and learning. Colloquiacomprise different activities and student teacher interactions, strengthening theknowledge base about teaching children. The major components which students are

expected toengagewitharestory-tellingandchildren’s literature,performingand finearts, designing a resource room and building on school experiences. Colloquia are anintegralpartoftheB.El.Edprogramme.

• Academic Enrichment Activities

Seminars and workshops are an integral part of the programme of study. They offerstudent-teachers the opportunity to interact with faculty of diverse disciplines fromwithinandoutsidethecollege.

1.5. Framework for Assessment and Grant of the Degree Attheendofeachacademicyear,AnnualExaminationisconductedinallthetheorycoursestaught during that particular year. 30%weightage is given to internal assessment in thetheorycourses.Practicumcoursesareassessedinternally.Studentshavetheoptiontowritethe examination in either Hindi or in English. The minimummarks required to pass theexaminationis40%ineachtheorypaper,45%inthewrittenpaperplusinternalassessment,50%inallpracticumcoursestakentogetherand50%intheoverallaggregateforeachyear.Candidatesobtaininglessthan50%aggregateinthepracticumstakentogetherwillnotbeallowed toappear in theAnnualExamination.TheB.El.Ed.degreewillbeawardedonly ifthecandidatehaspassedtheexaminationineachofthefouryearsviz.YearItoIVwithinsixyears of admission to the first year of the programme. 1.6. Scheme of Courses and Examination

The medium of instruction shall be Hindi and English.*Option will be offered as per the availability in respective Colleges.

F: Foundation Course;C: Core Course; P: Pedagogy Course;O: Optional Liberal Course;OP: Optional Pedagogy;OL: OptionalCourse;PR: Practicum;SC: SchoolContactProgrammeSI: School Internship. In thecoursenomenclature, thenumeralimmediatelyfollowingletters(F,C,P.etc.)denotestheYearoftheprogrammeinwhichthecourseistobetaught.The second numeral denotes the serial number in a particular course type. For instance, F2.5 signifies that HumanRelationsandCommunicationsisthe5thFoundationCoursetobetaughtintheIIYearoftheprogrammeofstudy.

Aditi Mahavidyalaya plays a dynamic role in bringing in womenempowerment to the marginalized women population of Delhi’s rural outskirts. Our graduates aremeaningfullycontributinginmanygovernmentandprivateinstitutionsasteachers,teachereducatorsandcurriculumdevelopersandsomeareassociatedwithNGOslikeBodhShikshaSamiti, Vidya Bhawan Society which are known for their innovations in the field ofeducation.Manyofourgraduatescompletedtheirmastersinvariousstreamsandpursuingresearchintheareasofbehaviourandsocialsciences.Aseparatewing in thecollegebuilding isexclusivelyallocatedtothedepartmentofB.El.Ed. for the smooth conduction of the practicum, workshops and other course relatedactivities.Departmenthasacurriculumlaboratorycumresourcecenter inwhicha library,computer (equipped with internet facility) and Audio-Visual facilities are available forstudents and teachers. Department library consists of reference materials, curricularresources and books including children’s literature and school textbooks and audio-visualmaterials. Department has its own well-equipped laboratories of Biology and Chemistry,alongwithalaboratoryofthecollaboratingdepartmentofGeography.Departmentisactivelyinvolvednotonlyinallacademicaffairsbutalsoinallsortsofco-curricularactivities.Studentsareexposedtovariousactivitiessuchasworkshops,localandoutsidefieldvisits,speciallecturesbyinvitingeminentexpertsandresourcespersonsofthearea.Acordialyet informalteacher-studentrelationshipexists inthedepartmentcreatinganatmosphereconducivetoall-roundprogressandoverallpersonalitydevelopmentofthestudents. Foundedintheyear1948bytheViceChancellor,SirMauriceGwyer,MirandaHouseisoneofthepioneeringinstitutionsoftheUniversityofDelhi.SituatedinthenorthcampusoftheUniversity, the college offers liberal education in Humanities and Sciences to more than3000 students. Only those candidates who haveappearedintheEntranceTestandsatisfytheminimumeligibilitycriteriawillbeconsideredforadmissionduringtheprocess.4.1.4.Ifacandidateisallottedaseatonthebasisofherbestpreference,thenshewillnotbeallowedtochangetoanylowerpreferenceinthecategory.4.1.5.Incaseofatie,thetie-breakingrulewouldbefollowedasgivenbelow:a.Anapplicantwhohassecuredhigherpercentageofmarks(aggregateofbestfivesubjectsincluding one language) in the qualifying examination will be considered first for theallotment/admission.b.Further, if theapplicantshavesecuredequalmarks in thequalifyingexamination, thenthe applicant having an earlier date of birth (asmentioned in class X certificate) will beconsideredforallotment/admission.Note:Theadmissionwillnotbegranted toacandidatewhosenamehasappeared in theallotment listbut fails tomeettheminimumeligibilitycriteria for thecourse.Registrationfeewillnotberefundedinanycircumstances.4.1.6. The applicant is required to go to the college allotted and complete all admissionrelated formalitieswithin the stipulated timeasper theSchedule. If theapplicant fails totakeadmission in theallotted college (within the stipulated time)due to any reason, theapplicant shall not be considered for any future allotment for the current year. 4.2.FirstRoundofCounselling/AllotmentofColleges4.2.1. The order of preference of colleges entered by the candidates during ONLINEregistration shall be processed centrally, and allotment of seats for the College will bedisplayedcategory-wiseontheUniversitywebsite.4.2.2. Online confirmation of provisional admission will be generated for the candidateswho are allotted seats in this round. The candidate can download the confirmation byloggingintotheiraccount.CandidatesmusttakeaprintoutoftheApplicationform.4.2.3.TheshortlistedcandidatesofthisroundwillhavetoreporttotheallottedCollegeforverification of required documents along with the admission form within the stipulatedperiod of time, as per the counselling schedule announced/ available on the AdmissionPortal.OncetheCollegeapprovestheadmissionofthecandidateonline,afeelinkwillbeactivated in the candidate‘s portal. The candidate must pay the fee online within thestipulatedtime,failingwhichherallottedseatwillautomaticallybecancelled.KindlyrefertotheschedulegiveninBulletinofInformation.4.2.4.Acandidateshallbedeclaredassuccessfullyadmittedcandidateonlyafterrealizationofthefee.4.2.5. Basedon the number of candidates admitted successfully, the vacant seatswill beavailablefor2ndroundofcounselling.4.2.6.Thesuccessfullyadmittedstudentswillbeautomaticallyconsideredforupgradationin the subsequent round of counselling. They may have the option to opt out fromupgradationatthetimeoffeepayment.4.2.7.Thefollowingcategoriesofcandidateswillnotbeconsideredinthesubsequentroundofcounselling:a)Candidateswhohavealreadybeenallottedtheirfirstpreference.b)Candidateswhohavevoluntarilyoptedoutofupgradation.c) Candidateswhose names appear in provisional admission list but did not pay the feeswithinthestipulatedperiodoftime.4.2.8.Thecandidateswhohavenotoptedoutfromupgradation,mustnotethatiftheyareupgraded in the subsequent counselling, their admission in previous College will beautomaticallycancelledandtheymusttakeafreshadmissionaspertheirupgradedchoice.4.3.SecondRoundofCounsellingThecandidatewillbeautomatically considered forupgradation, in case shehasnotbeenallottedthefirstpreference(filledbyher).4.3.1.Nofreshregistrationswouldbeallowedinthisround.4.3.2.Inthisround,alltheeligiblecandidatesasmentionedbelowMUSTvisitthewebsiteasperthecounsellingscheduletochecktheallotment/upgradationofseats.

a) All registered eligible candidateswhowere not allotted any seats in the first roundofonlinecounselling.b) Candidateswhowere declared as successful admitted candidates but did not opt outfromupgradation.4.3.3. In this round also, the allotment of seats for Colleges shall be processed centrallybased on the merit, preferences filled by the candidate and the category-wise seatallotment.TheresultswillbedisplayedontheUniversitywebsite.4.3.4.Acandidateallottedaseatforthefirsttimeinthisround(asindicatedinpoint2(a)ofthis section) will have to report to the allotted College for verification of requireddocumentsalongwiththeadmissionformwithinthestipulatedperiodoftime,asperthecounselling schedule.Once theCollegeapproves theadmissionof thecandidateonline,afee linkwillbeactivated in thecandidate‘sportal.Thecandidatemustpay the feeonlinewithinthestipulatedtime,failingwhichherallottedseatwillstandautomaticallycancelled,andcandidatewillnotbeconsideredforsubsequentONLINEroundsofseatallotment.Thecandidatesshallbedeclaredassuccessfullyadmittedcandidatesonlyafterrealizationofthefee.4.3.5.Candidatesasmentioned in2 (b) in this section,maygeta seatasper theirhigherpreferenceortheirpreviouslyallottedseatmayremainunchanged.Incasethecandidateisallotted her higher preference, the candidate’s previous admission will automatically becancelledandthecandidatewillhavetowithdrawhiscertificatesfromthepreviouscollege.Thecandidatehastoreport totheallottedCollege forverificationof requireddocumentsalongwiththeadmissionformwithinthestipulatedperiodoftime,asperthecounsellingschedule.OncetheCollegeapprovestheadmissionofthecandidateonline,afeelinkwillbeactivated in the candidate‘s portal. The candidate must pay the adjusted admission feeonline within the stipulated time, failing which her allotted seat will stand automaticallycancelled, and candidate will not be considered for subsequent ONLINE rounds of seatallotment. ABOUT FACULTY OF EDUCATION

The Faculty of Education, University of Delhi, earlier known as the Central Institute ofEducation(CIE),wasperhapsthefirstmajorinstituteofprofessionallearningandresearchinEducationthatwasestablishedjustafterindependence.ThefirstPrimeMinisterofIndia,Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and his Education Minister, Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad tookconsiderable interest in theestablishmentofCIE in1947and itsactivitiesandprogress inthose early years. Maulana Azad visualized the function of CIE not merely to “turn outteacherswhowillbemodelteachers”,buttoevolveinto“aresearchcentreforsolvingneweducational problems of the country”. Maulana envisioned that CIE would grow into “abeaconlightforteachertraininginstitutesofthecountry”.Overthesepastdecades,CIEhasattempted to work towards this vision.Moreover, at this juncture, when the nation hasintroduced the Right to Education Act and a National Curricular Framework for TeacherEducation,butisgrapplingwithhowitwillprepareavastcadreofteacherswhocanensurequalitywithequity,CIEwillneedtobraceitselftoaddressthischallenge.
