PAULOWNIA - THE SUPER SPECIESPaulownia, a soft hardwood, is predominantly

plantation grown and consideredan exceptionally earth-friendly

tree given its regenerationgrowth cycles, fast time to yield and consumption of

large amounts of carbon from the air.

Carbon RemovalThe fast growth rate of Paulownia allows forproviding one of the most effective carbon sinks compared to other trees. The trees soak up an amazingamount of carbon dioxide andhave been embraced by manyenvironmentalists as a way tocontrol carbon emissions globally.To grow the trees to make a singletruckload of Paulownia boards requires the absorption of over 3 million pounds of carbon dioxide.

With a twelve-year growing cycle, it takes almosthalf the area that would be required to grow thesame amount of wood from other fast-growingspecies and less than a fifth of the area required togrow most traditional species. Yet, it’s one of themost stable trim boards on the market.

Wood CharacteristicsPaulownia heartwood is light in color and thesapwood even lighter. The color difference betweenthe two is indistinct. The wood is straight grained,lightweight, and odorless and when sanded has thefeel of spun silk.

Paulownia is comparatively soft and light in weightfor a hardwood. Physical weight is slightly less than

kiln dried western red cedar and two-thirds the weight of eastern white pine. It has a very high

strength-to-weight ratio.

The shrinkagecoefficient is smaller than

most commercially harvested coniferous and broad leaf woods.

The wood dries rapidly and does not easily warp,cup, end check, splinter or split. Movement inservice is rated as small.

PAULOWNIA WOOD QUALITIES

Natural Protective TraitsPaulownia has one of the lowest thermalconductivity values of any wood; therefore the wood

has very high insulation properties.Low thermal conductivitycontributes to the low shrinkage in

use. Compared to most woods,Paulownia has a high resistance to fire

and flame and a higher ignition/flashpoint. Paulownia is naturally decay and

insect resistant. It has no measurable pitchor resin. Like all decay-resistant substrates, it hassome water-soluble extractives though less so thaneastern pine or cedar.

Preservative FreeUnlike some other species used for exteriorapplications, Paulownia does not require anyharmful chemical treatments such as Borates orLOSP’s (light organic solvent preservatives) to makeit decay and rot resistant.

Paulownia has natural decay, rot and insectresistance and no measurable pitch or resins thatcan be found in Pine or Cedar. These characteristicsmake E-Prime the ideal choice for interior orexterior applications.

E-PRIME® IS PACKED FULL OF FEATURESE-PRIME® includes all of the natural benefits thatPaulownia has to offer. In addition, E-PRIME®

boards are puttied and then sanded four sides afterpriming, resulting in a super smooth, fully reversiblefinish. E-PRIME® may contain filler that is epoxybased that can be painted, sawn or routed. National Starch exterior waterproof glue backed by a 10-year warranty is used to produce the FJ and FJ/edge glued boards.

State-of-the-Art Priming System and TopcoatE-PRIME® trim boards feature a two coat, hightechnology priming/painting system backed by a10-year warranty. First, thehighest quality exterior oil-based primer is sprayed on allfour sides and sanded. Next,State-of-the-Art Ze-VO™, a zero-VOC, zero emissionsacrylic topcoat is applied. This high-end, “green”topcoat carries a 10-year warranty even before afinal coat is applied in the field.

An additional finished field topcoat of 100% AcrylicLatex extends the warranty to 15 years. Bevel Siding,Pattern Stock, and Sidewall Shingles have two coatsof factory-applied oil-based primer; no topcoat isapplied. See written warranty for full details.

Convenient WorkabilityPaulownia is easy to work using hand or machinetools. It is easy to plane, sand, saw, rip, rout, andcarve, and even during quick processing there is nodanger of splitting or chipping. It easily absorbsglue, paint, and stains.
