ParentsGuide of Las Vegas is moving into its third year of publication and we appreciate the support from the thousands of parents and grandparents who read our magazine every month. Through the feedback of our readers we work to con-tinually improve the magazine, website and participation with social media. To that end I am pleased to announce we are adding members to our advisory board, beefing up our local editorial content and offering mail subscriptions.

One of the new additions to our advisory board is Leland Brandon. Mr. Brandon is a founding partner at Kidz Matter, as well a visionary pioneer for youth martial arts in Nevada. His work with Kidz Matter and ATA / Karate for Kids continues to improve the lives of many Las Vegas area families. Mr. Brandon’s input on our advisory board is much appreciated.

PGLV has always strived to provide relevant information to Las Vegas parents. You will notice more quality editorial content in 2011 than ever before. As many of our articles as possible are written by local experts who live and work in Las Vegas. For example, two of our newest editorial contributors are Cindee Huddy of Shine Etiquette School and Dr. Stephen Fife from the Marriage and Family Therapy program at UNLV. We hope you will find Mrs. Huddy’s column on ‘the social graces’ a must read each month. Dr. Fife’s articles in PGLV will deal with some

of the most important issues facing parents as they raise chil-dren in Southern Nevada.

Finally, we have received several requests over the past couple of years to offer subscriptions to PGLV. While we will continue to provide the largest free distribution network of any family publication in Nevada, we have also introduced paid monthly subscriptions for those who want PGLV sent directly to their mail box (see page 2 for details on how to subscribe).

Thank you for your support of PGLV as we continue Helping Good Parents Raise Better Kids™.

Best,

Mark Sherwood

By Dr. Stephen FifeIn America today, approximately 36% of all marriages taking

place are remarriages, at least for one of the partners (U.S. Census Bureau). Nearly half these remarriages include biological children of one or both partners. Families that include children from a previous relationship are often referred as blended families, or stepfamilies. Because of the negative connotation that sometimes surrounds the idea of stepfamilies (for example, the wicked stepmother, mean step-sisters, mistreated stepchild), many experts prefer the term blended family. More recently, some scholars have moved away from the term blended family in favor of re-married families, in part because they recognize how difficult it can be for two families to truly “blend.”

One of the challenges facing blended families is that there are very few models of how to successfully bring two families together (with the beloved exception of the Brady Bunch). The primary family model that is embedded in our cultural consciousness is that of intact, first marriages (or the nuclear family). That leaves members of blended families comparing themselves to a cultural standard and holding expectations that may not be appropriate for their family situation. Although much of what we know about good parenting and creating strong families applies to blended families, there are some important differences between stepfamilies and first-marriage families. Parents who understand these differences and have realistic expectations will have a greater chance to build successful families. The following keys can help. The Couple:

Build a strong, committed relationship to each other. As with all fami-lies, success in stepfamilies rests on the quality of the marriage relation-ship. The stressors of blended families (and life in general) put couples at risk of neglecting their relationship. Make sure you have alone time to nourish your marriage and keep communication lines open.

Have realistic expectations about the time it will take for new

family members to get to know each other and learn to get along. All members are experiencing significant changes in their lives, and the adjustment process can be challenging. Be patient with each other and generous with understanding and forgiveness.

Be prepared for challenges and stay committed to the family’s success. Step-parent:

Look for the positive qualities in each child. Use constructive com-munication and complements, rather than criticism.

Support the discipline practices of the biological parent. Avoid assuming the role of a disciplinarian.

Have realistic expectations about developing relationships with your step children. They may not be happy with the situation, and the adjustment may be difficult. They may be feeling anxious about divided loyalties (i.e., if they like their step mom, then they may feel they are betraying their biological mom). Don’t expect too much at once. Patience is critical.biological Parent:

You play a critical role in the development of a positive relationship between your child and your new spouse. Encourage their relation-ship, but don’t try to force it.

Create structure in the household, and help your spouse under-stand the family rules and responsibilities. Try to include them in daily routines as much as possible.

Keep lines of communication open with your children. Invite them to express their feelings openly. Recognize that your children may have a difficult time adjusting to the changes of remarriage and a new step parent. Be patient and understanding.

Try to facilitate activities that the whole family can do together.

Dr. Stephen Fife is an Associate Professor in the UNLV Department of Mar-riage and Family Therapy. His research has been published widely and presented at national and international conferences. He is happily married and the father of two sons.

Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour begins its journey as the Harrah’s head-lining celebrity rallies the community to collect books for youth. In all, King has a goal of collecting 2100 books during this tour with the hopes of giving them to underprivileged students.

The tour kicks off with a special book drive at the Las Vegas Wranglers hockey games on February 4 & 5. The games begin at 7:05 p.m. and anyone who donates a minimum of three new or gently used school-aged books will receive two complimentary tickets to The Mac King Comedy Magic Show and a ticket to a future Wranglers hockey game.

Celebrating Nevada Reading Week (Feb. 28 – Mar. 4), King has partnered

with Clark County READS, an initia-tive of The Public Education Founda-tion, to perform a special book reading/magic show for four at-risk elementary schools in our community.

King is reaching out to at-risk youth where literacy rates are at its their lowest to teach them the importance of reading and encourage these students to read. Each student from the assemblies will receive a book from Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour book drive.

“Reading is very important to me because it literally changed my life,” said King. “One of the reasons I became a magician is because I checked a magic book out of my school library as a kid. I want to give kids the opportunity to explore new topics through the magic of reading so that they too can find their passion in life. Please help a kid by donat-ing a book to my Magical Literacy Tour”

“We are extremely grateful to have Mac King’s support in promoting the importance of reading in Southern Nevada while working to end the cycle of illiteracy,” said Judi Steele, president of The Public Education Foundation. “We applaud his generosity and commit-ment to our children, and we hope the community will join the effort by donating much needed books.”

Motivating the Work-Inhibited ChildBy Dr. Raymond J. Huntington

Meet Jake, a child who rarely, if ever, does school work on his own. Jake’s teachers report that he enjoys learning about topics that inter-est him, but seems unfocused during class time and fails to complete necessary school work, both in class and as homework. Although his grades are suffering, Jake makes no effort to improve his circumstances. His frustrated parents are convinced that nagging and constant super-vision are the only ways to get Jake to complete his assignments.

Sound familiar? If you are the parent of a work-inhibited child, you probably feel helpless. Here are a few other traits of children like Jake and ideas on how parents can address work inhibition problems:

Common characteristics of work-inhibited children:They tend to lose things and are very disorganized. They don’t often follow through on things they say they will do

(including homework). They do not work independently. They are more likely to do work when a teacher or parent hovers

close by. During in-class work time (and homework time), they avoid work

altogether by doing other things, walking around, talking to class-mates and the like.

They seem passive about school, although it is clear from interac-tions that they are knowledgeable, often bright.

They may be self-conscious, get discouraged easily and demon-strate a “can’t-do” attitude.

How parents can help their work-inhibited child: Work on the “work” habits. Encourage your child to be persistent

in all that he or she does, even when a task is difficult. Set small goals (and teach your child to set goals for him or herself) and take frequent notice of any progress and effort toward them.

Trust in your child’s abilities. Your confidence in your child will

improve his or her own self-confidence. Conversely, lectures about poor work habits and constant reminders about the negative con-sequences of unfinished homework can cause your child to be even more dependent.

Let your child know that you are there to assist. Often, children who are work inhibited are fearful about being wrong or asking questions when they need help. Teach your child that mistakes are nothing to be ashamed of and that everyone makes them - and learns from them.

Give your child responsibilities at home. Chores are a great way to empower children, make them feel competent and successful, and boost their self-esteem, but parents should be careful not to micro-manage or nag. Try assigning tasks related to an area of interest, too. If your child enjoys trying new foods, let him or her plan and cook dinner one night a week - all on his or her own.

Communicate directly and positively. Rather than pointing out your child’s faults, focus on the things he or she is good at. Offer your support by asking how you can help your child do better, but don’t pressure or pester with loads of advice. When your child succeeds at something, give genuine, specific praise.

If your child seems to possess the intellectual capability to succeed in school but suffers from a reticence to complete his or her work, first work to uncover the root of the problem. Once you have a better understanding of your child, develop a plan to help him or her iden-tify those feelings of insecurity and overcome his or her dependency and work inhibition. Increasing positive, productive communications with your child will not only take stress off your relationship, it will help him or her become a self-sufficient student.

Dr. Raymond J. Huntington and Eileen Huntington are co-founders of Huntington Learning Center, which has been helping children succeed in school for more than 30 years. For more information about Huntington, call 1-800 CAN LEARN.

While you’re out shopping for the big game this weekend, pick up an item for the Ronald McDonald House!

Imagine buying all your groceries for the year on one shopping day. For the Ronald McDonald House® of Greater Las Vegas, that day is Saturday, February 5th

All participating Smith’s Food & Drug locations throughout the greater Las Vegas area will be hosting an annual food drive for Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC®) of Greater Las Vegas on Saturday, February 5th, 2011, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in recognition of National Food Check-Out Day.

Volunteers will be on hand at Smith’s Food Stores to provide information and assist shoppers in making their donations. Shoppers will receive a Ronald McDonald House Wish List as they enter the store, inviting them to pick up items for families staying at the House as they shop.

“The remarkable thing about this food drive is that in one day, we receive everything we need to provide our families with food and a clean and comfortable place to stay for the entire year,” says Janet Linder, Executive Director of the Las Vegas Ronald McDonald House. “We’ll have stacks of cereal boxes rise to the ceiling, entire rooms filled with canned goods, and freezers packed with meats and frozen dinners – all because of the generosity of individuals in this city!”

Food Check Out Day is recognized by the National Farm Bureau as the day of the year when most Americans will have earned enough income to pay for their yearly food supply. This is the tenth year Las Vegas Smith’s stores have supported the Ronald McDonald House annual food drive, which stocks the shelves with non-perishable and frozen food items, paper products such as toilet paper and napkins, and cleaning supplies.

The Ronald McDonald House of Greater Las Vegas provides a “home away from home” for families who must travel to Las Vegas to receive critical medical treatment for their children. These Families face great hardship while their children undergo hospitalization or out-patient care for serious illness or trauma, and the Ronald McDonald House offers a place of comfort and support while they’re away from home.

About RMHC of Greater Las Vegas Believing that every child deserves a safe and supportive place to grow, Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC®) of Greater Las Vegas creates and supports programs that directly improve the health, education and well-being of children in our community. We fulfill our mission by providing a home-away-from-home at the Ronald McDonald House® for families who travel to Las Vegas to receive critical medical treatment for their children, and manage programs that service the immediate needs of children and families in our community.

By Dr. Maria Martinez

Strep throat is an infection of the throat caused by a bacterium called streptococcus. It is transmitted via the saliva or secretions from person to person. Most frequently it occurs in children between 5-15 years of age. Babies and toddlers rarely get strep, but it is possible especially if they have been exposed to someone in the household with it or if there is an outbreak at their daycare or preschool. The winter months are the most likely time for sore throats and Strep to occur.

Three to five days after the person has been exposed they expe-rience symptoms. These symptoms can be sore throat, fever, head-aches, stomach aches and they can appear all of a sudden. Others symptoms may also include coughing and congestion. In addition, they may experience difficulty swallowing, swollen enlarged ton-sils and lymph nodes that at times you can feel on the side of the neck, joint pains, and red swelling of the groin area. Rashes can also be seen in some cases. Usually it is a fine red rash all over the body that feels like sandpaper. Other times the patient may pres-ent with hives. Whether the symptoms are severe or not depends on the individual patient.

Not all sore throats are due to Strep throat. Throat infections can be due to viruses or bacteria. The one most commonly treated is the one caused by streptococcus, which is the most common bac-teria causing throat infections. Treatments are often aimed at pre-venting a secondary illnesses caused by these bacteria. The most notorious is rheumatic fever, which is an illness that affects the heart and cannot be cured. It is also known to affect the kidneys.

Strep throat is diagnosed with a throat swab that is tested for these bacteria. There are two tests available - a rapid strep test

and a routine culture. The rapid strep test is positive in about 85% of the cases. If the rapid strep test is negative then a routine cul-ture should be done. Strep throat usually gets better on its own, but antibiotics are used to prevent the complications mentioned above. The patient should take the whole course of antibiotics to prevent the appearance of rheumatic fever or recurrence of strep. If he or she stops taking the antibiotics too soon, the bacteria can remain in the throat and the symptoms may return. If your child has recurrent strep throat, speak with your pediatrician.

See your physician if you have symptoms of strep throat. One aims to start treatment within 9 days of symptoms starting. A person is considered contagious until 24-48 hours after the anti-biotics have been initiated. Children should not go back to school until they have been taking the antibiotics for at least 24 hours. Once on medications for about 48 hours dispose of old tooth-brushes since these bacteria can live there and re-infect the indi-vidual. If there is no improvement of the symptoms in 48-72 hours contact your physician.

You can help your child feel better while he or she has strep throat by giving them plenty of fluids in addition to the antibiot-ics. Sometimes warm things like soup may help. Other times the child may take cold liquids or popsicles aiming to decrease the pain. Acetaminophen, generic of Tylenol, may also be used for the fever. Also, get plenty of rest since this is important for the body to recuperate.

Dr Maria Martinez is a Pediatrician at Good Night Pediatrics which provides all-night urgent care for children every night of the year from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Children’s Hospital of Nevada at UMC is celebrating the one year anniversary of our Grand Opening. UMC has been caring for the children of southern Nevada for decades, and last year, we created a hospital just for children, Children’s Hospital of Nevada.

Over the past year, we’ve taken care of about 40,000 children. Whether those children have come through our Emergency Depart-ment to fix a broken arm, or have been isolated in our Critical Inten-sive Care Unit to recover from a life threatening illness, our patients receive an unparalleled level of care.

As further testimony to our commitment and services, Children’s Hospital of Nevada fulfilled the stringent membership criteria set by the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institu-tions (NACHRI), and we are proud to announce that Children’s Hos-pital of Nevada at UMC is the only hospital in Nevada to be accepted as an associate member of this prestigious association. Children’s Hospital of Nevada is a nonprofit, academic medical center dedicated to providing comprehensive quality care to southern Nevada.

If your child is hurt or injured, know that Children’s Hospital of Nevada has board certified pediatric emergency room physicians on day and night. No matter the time, one of our doctors, specially trained to take care of your child will see them, and our “door-to-doctor” time is fast, averaging 18 minutes.

If you child’s illness requires an extended stay, our Pediatric Inten-sivists are also here around the clock, and they are Board Certified and Fellowship Trained to take care of young patients.

Additionally, Children’s Hospital of Nevada is home to the only Burn Care Center and Transplant Center in the state. Children’s Hos-pital of Nevada is the only hospital in Nevada to offer a dedicated Pediatric Sedation Unit, so procedures aren’t as frightening for our patients. Additionally, if your child is traumatically injured, Children’s Hospital of Nevada is the only Level II Pediatric Trauma Center in the state.

As a parent, I understand how precious your children are. As a Pediatric Critical Care Physician, I am proud to offer the finest chil-dren’s services found anywhere in Nevada.

Dr. Meena Vohra is a mother of two, and Medical Director of Children’s Hospital of Nevada at UMC.

Building on a Solid Foundation

By Kidz Matter

February is Courtesy month. The goal is for kids to develop their skills of good manners and social behavior. If you help young children learn the life skill of courtesy, they will continue to use good manners and become more socially aware as they get older. Kids who prac-tice courtesy and good social behavior are more successful with friends, family, and teachers.

It is agreed that courtesy needs to be taught, and it’s easier to nurture good behavior if you work as a family to set the rules for good manners in many differ-ent situations. An easy way to get started is to define the rules of good behavior in the home. Make it simple by having just a few rules for each situation, and then adding to it as your child develops their skills. Example: good table manners may start with using the right utensil and never speaking with your mouth full. Then, add asking to be excused from the table, etc.

Determine your rules for these situations:

Table manners - How should you eat? What can you do or say if you can’t reach the food on the table? What can you do or say if you don’t like something you’re served?

Meeting new people - What do you say when you are introduced to an adult?

Receiving gifts - What should you say when someone gives you a gift — even before you open it? What do you do if you don’t like the gift? How can you tell someone “thank you” if they’re not with you when you open the gift?

Telephone manners - What do you say when you answer the phone? How do you get the right adult to the phone?

Practice this behavior to show courtesy in action:

Share belongings with friends and family members.

Not complaining when asked to do something.

Not leaving someone out of activities and conversations.

Help cheerfully, without being asked. Always say “please, thank you, and

you’re welcome”. Think about how others will feel before

you say things. Hold the door open for someone else.

Don’t forget these modern technology courtesy challenges:

The person you are with is the most important person so don’t call or text others.

Don’t talk on the cell phone inside restaurants or public places.

Don’t text while in the company of others.

Don’t use your cell phone at the dinner table.

Remember that parent modeling is cer-tainly the most important factor in teach-ing courtesy to children. Lead by example and encourage all efforts at good behavior. Your child will thank you.

building a better Marriage

By Dr. Stephen Fife

Years ago, as a young doctoral student, I learned an important lesson from a couple that came to see me. They sat down in my office at the beginning of the first session and declared, “We have intimacy prob-lems.” They described a lack of closeness in their marriage and serious problems with their sexual intimacy. “We’re coming to you as an expert to help us fix this prob-lem,” they said. As a new therapist, I almost looked around the room to see where the expert was.

At the beginning of their relationship, this couple developed a deep friendship and enjoyed a variety of activities together. However, over the years they had had failed to nurture their marriage and keep their courtship alive. As they described their struggles, it became clear that they were having significant struggles in the area of sexual intimacy. Yet, what stood out even more was the way they defined intimacy. For this couple, intimacy meant one thing: sex. And because this wasn’t going very well for them, they didn’t feel close to each other at all. I suggested that in addition to addressing their sexual relationship, they also needed to expand their definition of intimacy so they could reconnect with each other in various ways. We broadened their definition of intimacy to mean closeness, connection, and sharing. Of course, this could include sexual closeness and con-nection, but intimacy actually incorporates much more. I shared with them a short list of different types of intimacy, and they began to realize that they liked being close in many ways — they just hadn’t defined it as intimacy. Broadening their definition of intimacy helped them develop a founda-

tion upon which they built a happy, mutu-ally satisfying marriage.

The idea that intimacy in marriage should be multi-faceted rings true for many couples. They intuitively know that couples should connect with each other in a variety of ways. However, knowing what ways you and your spouse connect (or could con-nect) can be difficult to pinpoint. I devel-oped the Aspects of Intimacy in Marriage to help couples evaluate their relationship and make plans to enhance their close-ness and connection. Here is the list as it now stands, although it will likely expand as couples continue to share their wisdom with me.

My experience observing healthy mar-riages and working with couples in ther-apy has led me to conclude two things: 1) strong marriages have a multi-dimensional approach to intimacy, and 2) any one dimen-sion alone will not be enough to sustain a marriage. Successful marriages don’t require every aspect on this list. However, hap-pily married spouses have a core collection of ways in which they regularly find con-nection with each other and nurture their relationship. This Valentine’s season, take the opportunity to sit down together and evaluate how well you’ve been connecting. Make plans to keep your courtship alive and enhance your intimacy through sharing and connecting in a variety of ways.

Dr. Stephen Fife is an Associate Professor in the UNLV Department of Marriage and Family Therapy. His research has been published widely and presented at national and international conferences. He is happily married and the father of two sons.

Terry Fator’s Got Talent!By Mark Sherwood

My family and I saw Terry Fator last week and it was great! No doubt Fator is a unique talent. Las Vegas, with its mil-lions of tourists from all locations and walks of life, is a good fit for Terry who does impressions spanning the past 60 years of music and crosses nearly all musical genres. He is a performer who should be a big time headliner on the Strip for years to come.

Fator performs at the Mirage in the same venue where the late Danny Gans performed. Fator and his live band are arguably on par with Gans’ singing impressions. Of course Fator has the added degree of difficulty of singing with his mouth closed! Fator’s performance starts at 7:30pm and you will miss an entertaining pre-show if you don’t come early. His supporting cast, including a dozen or so pup-pets, the band, the one-man warm up act and his lovely assistant, all work together to make the show a lot of fun.

While this is an evening show in Vegas, and there are a couple of adult innuendos in the act, Fator gets a thumb’s up for being family friendly. As an example, an usher brought over a ‘boster pad’ for my six year old daughter before the show started so she could see over the chair in front of her. Our kids loved the Terry Fator, and it was not all about the puppets. Terry is a gifted musician outside of the ventriloquism. At one point he puts away the dummies and sings a song called “Horses in Heaven” which showcases his talent as a singer / songwriter. He also does a Robert Plant impression that Zeppelin fans will appreciate.

The next time you have family or friends visiting from out of town, or if you just want to enjoy one of Vegas’ current great talents, check out Terry Fator. Everyone in your party is sure to enjoy themselves.

You can see a couple of short ‘bootleg videos’ from Terry Fator’s show by going to Facebook.com/Parentsguide. To find out about show times and prices for Terry Fator please see the Family Calendar on page 24.

Fun Facts about Terry Fator Terry received his first puppet, Josh, at age 10 Terry first introduced his unique mixture of ventriloquism and celebrity impressions while touring with a country rock band called Texas Terry’s oldest puppet is legendary country singer Walter T. Airdale. Walter was given to Terry as a gift from his mom on his 18th birthday. Duggie Scott Walker, Terry’s burned-out rocker character, is based on a close relative.

Every year there is a Ventriloquist Convention held in Ken-tucky. Terry always wanted to attend, but could never afford it. In 2008 he was invited to headline the event.

Two african kids who just started their new life in Las Vegas!By Cassie Rice

In February 2010, my husband travelled to Uganda, a country in Eastern Africa and couldn’t believe what he saw. Uganda is almost half-way around the world from Las Vegas. It is 11 hours ahead of us and is on the equator so there is a lot of humidity and almost always is at 80 degree temperatures.

He went to an orphanage (www.mlisada.com) where kids used their acrobatic and musical skills to help the orphanage make money and support hundreds of kids, but it was terribly poor and in need of so much. He called one day on his trip and said he wanted to adopt two kids to give them a

future. We began the process of adopting the two boys who were in that acrobatic troupe. The process was long, difficult and expensive, but the boys made it to the U.S. 5 days before Christmas, 2010. What a Christmas they had! We woke up finding one of the boys lying under the tree inves-tigating all the presents. To them this was amazing, to me I would be amazed at the refrigerator, the pantry, having ice, garbage pickup, paved roads and emissions stan-dards, but to them they were just so excited to have new things. In Uganda they each had just a few articles of clothing.

What a change in their life. The contrast between life in the United States and life in Uganda is not even comprehensible for most of our citizens. Basic human needs are not met in Uganda. Electricity, trash, health services, government, police, regula-tions etc all have big problems and are ram-pant with corruption.

White people (called Muzungus) are sought after by the local people for services or to purchase things mostly because those are the people who have money and most of the richest people who live there are part of charitable organizations (NGO’s). Because of the lack of education, kids don’t have a future that can amount to much. In Uganda there’s no such thing as working harder and making a better life for yourself. The infra-

structure is such that it makes it near impos-sible to live a life that even the poorest people have here in the United States.

Our boys just started school here, have joined a soccer club and get to do gymnas-tics, hip hop and juggling. They went from no structure to the structure of our Ameri-can kids. It has been a huge change and a big adjustment. It has been a big change for our family to go from two girls to two girls and two boys, but it is great to watch these kids experience for the first time, what all our kids take for granted.

My husband and I went to Africa as two regular people who wanted to help some kids who had a future with little hope and give them a chance at a real education and a life that may lead to them helping their country one day. There is such a large need in Africa, but we are at least giving two boys a chance at a changed life and for that they are very grateful. If you’d like to help out this orphanage, they are always looking for donations. Contact me at [email protected] and I will let you know how you can help.

Cassie Rice is a world class gymnastics coach who lives in Henderson, NV and the proud mom of four children. Her articles appear frequently in ParentsGuide of Las Vegas.

Giving Feels GoodNot all gifts are tangible. When you support Catholic Chari-

ties of Southern Nevada, your donation isn’t just about giving money, clothes or a vehicle. It goes far beyond for the less fortunate Southern Nevadans.

You’re giving the gift of hope. You’re providing for people in need. You’re help-ing a child make sure his first meal of the day isn’t his last. You’re helping a senior citizen who can’t afford medicine get what he needs to maintain his health. You’re helping keep a roof over someone’s head.

Your donation goes toward the two dozen diverse programs that Catholic Charities offers. You’ll be helping people

all of ages from all backgrounds, regard-less of race, religion or creed.

Catholic Charities assists families, including aiding with adoption services and WIC supplemental food programs for infants and children, respite care and companion programs for seniors, and social services programs providing emer-gency food, clothing, diapers, school sup-plies, rental assistance, utility payment assistance, counseling and more.

Food service programs ensure people are receiving necessary nutrition, and employment services and shelter are pro-vided for those who have fallen on hard times.

In 2009, more than 730,000 meals were served to men, women and children at the St. Vincent Lied Dining Facility. Forty-eight children were placed in loving

homes through adoption services. More than 2,000 people were counseled about their immigration rights. Thousands of hours of service were provided to 812 children in 41 different schools through the Foster Grandparent Program.

It’s all about making a difference in the lives of less fortunate Southern Nevadans. That’s what Catholic Charities has been doing for 69 years, and with your help, we can continue our mission to accommodate the needs of our community, while provid-ing those most cherished gifts – hope and help.

To make a donation, please call 385-2622 or visit CatholicCharities.com.

Saving money is more and more fash-ionable these days. One way to save a lot of money is by purchasing resale kids clothing.Cassandra Danner, of Summerlin, fre-quently shops for clothes for her two fast growing daughters at one of the nearly dozen kids’ resale stores in Las Vegas. Mrs. Danner says she has been impressed with the quality of the merchandise and says she is “never going back to retail.”

Two of the more popular stores to recently open in Las Vegas are It’s Mine

Now and Chick-A-Dees. Mira Burhan from It’s Mine Now says many of her most loyal customers first came to her store to sell clothing. They were then so impressed with the price and quality of the merchan-dise that they started to buy from her too. Lindsey Lawson of Chick-A-Dees, says it’s not uncommon for name brand clothing in her store to sell for as much as 75% less than retail.

Another big trend in resale kids clothing are giant consignment events. In Las Vegas the biggest sales are put on by a company called As They Grow. Twice each year the team from As They Grow rents out a mas-sive retail space to house the three day sales. These events are semi-annual because it lit-erally takes a couple of months to put each one together. Consigners who participate in these sales love cleaning out their clos-ets of the past season’s clothes and making money at the same time. Shoppers love these events because there are so many seasonal items in one location at one time.

A fun educational approach topromote manners and life skills.

Classes in Henderson or at your location.

Instructor Cindee HuddyGraduate of the Prestigious American School of Protocol

www.shineonline.me

By Cindee Huddy

“Good manners will open doors that the best educa-tion cannot.” – Clarence Thomas

Recently I bumped into a dear friend at the grocery store, who had her six year old in tow. As her mother and I began to embrace, the little one popped in between us and said, “Hi, I am Hannah” with a big smile on her face. I leaned down, offered her a handshake and introduced myself. She replied, “It’s nice to meet you.” It was a sweet moment of exchange, but it also made me think of how often we forget to introduce others.

Introductions are one of the best ways to acknowledge one another. It helps everyone feel included in the conversation. This par-ticular social skill builds confidence. The best way for children to learn is by watch-ing their parents.

The four basic rules of introduction:

When two people of the same age, same sex are introduced, it does not matter whose name is spoken first.

A female’s name is always spoken first when introducing a female and a male.

When introducing an adult and a young person, the adult should always be intro-duced first.

When introducing a very important person (or VIP) to anyone, he or her should be introduced first.

Other important tools include:

Look the other person in the eye.

It is never too early to teach the impor-tance of good eye contact. Even when speaking to a toddler you can say “Look at Mommy when you are speaking.” Once you gain eye contact, smile and say thank you.

Extend your hand and offer a firm handshake.

As you extend your hand, hold your head high, look the person in the eye, and smile. You should lock thumbs, then close your fingers around the hand while firmly shaking the person’s hand once up, once down and then release.

“Even the smallest star shines in the darkness” – Finnish ProverbCindee Huddy is the owner of SHINE Social Etiquette and Image Development located in Henderson, Nevada and is a graduate of the prestigious American School of Protocol in Atlanta, Georgia.

Teaching Manners, building Confidence – The Introduction

Parent tip:

Take time to prep your child for your next outing. A parent should practice eye contact, a firm handshake and introductions. It will dazzle and amaze your friends and family. As people respond to your child with a warm return, they will begin to do it naturally.
