SAVE Question of the Month:

Please share the SAVE Question of the Month with your SAVE members. The Media/Latest News section of the new website is a place for students to ask questions and get responses from SAVE members across the country.

June QoM: “Since many schools are out for the summer, students will be on the Internet more frequently. How can you protect yourself from a Cyberbully?”

Please blog your responses to: https://nationalsave.org/?s=qom

Monthly Focus: Internet Safety SAVE encourages students to be extremely careful when using the Internet. Messages posted in any kind of a public forum can be read by anyone. Personal information such as name, address (home and email), telephone number, school name, or information on family and friends should never be shared with anyone you meet in cyberspace. Never reveal anything about other people that could possibly get them into trouble. It is important to remember that people you meet online, whether in a chatroom or message forum, may not be who they say they are. Also be careful not to provide any personal details, including locations, on your instant messenger “away” message. Service Project Activities - • Sponsor an “Internet Free Weekend” where students

agree to participate in community service work at local charities instead of surfing the web.

• Share the list of internet safety tips with other schools in your district and/or state.

• Have several SAVE members write an article on Internet Safety for the school paper.

During the Teen Safe Driving program at Biloxi High School, a wrecked car involved in an actual DUI was parked in front of the school as a reminder of what can happen if someone is driving impaired. Students conducted a distracted driving questionnaire and student seat belt checks. There were additional safe driving and responsible behavior events during prom week. The SAVE advisor is Officer Daisy Watson.

Vickie Szarek, 2012 SAVE Advisor of the Year: Be Safe and Have a Great Day!

LOL 16 & going strong … OMG I like that … Where u at … Going home … out 2nite … bday 2day … simple phrases, but ones that might get you in trouble depending on who you are “talking to”. Did you post your birthday and pictures of you and your friends on Facebook in compromising and misleading situations? Did you post your address and your work schedule for friends to see (and anyone else who might be surfing your page)? This month take an inventory of what you have posted and who can see your information. Teens think nothing of what they post on Facebook, YouTube, twitter, or texting on their phones (personal details, locations, names, and times parents are away). You would be surprised at the information you are giving away and how it might compromise your safety. Consider having your local police unit specializing in internet safety come and talk to your chapter and ask chapter members to help educate their peers. Do you really know how time consuming Facebook and internet connections can be? You can educate chapter members by having your students run an “Internet Free Weekend” with a service project that doesn’t need the internet; have them check in their phones when attending the event;

discuss how they felt without their phone and could they live without it. For chapter meetings, you can connect the internet safety education with the texting while driving messages from last month. As students in high school prepare for graduation and college, give each senior a list of internet safety tips to use in the future and distribute the list during lunch or through homeroom teachers to hit maximum population numbers.

As this is my last article for the year, I want to thank you all for all you do to spread the message of SAVE. Keep those voices strong. It’s been an honor to write for our e-newsletter each month. It’s something I will always treasure. So as I sign off, remember to be safe, be good, and behave!

Help Tell the SAVE Story!

YABer Yak: National Youth Advisory Board Member: Jaclyn Morton, Highland School of Technology, Gastonia, NC

As the school year is winding down to a close, internet activity is rising to its peaks. While students are away from school, they now have eight hours a day to themselves with the lure of the internet constantly calling. There are several safety measures to keep in mind when it comes to staying safe on the internet. The number one tip is to not reveal any personal information about yourself or your whereabouts on the internet or any social media site! For more internet safety tips, please visit www.nationalsave.org.

It was very difficult for me to write this YABer Yak for you all, as it is my last one. I would like to thank SAVE and all of the wonderful chapters, students, and advisors for allowing me to serve as your Chair of the Youth Advisory Board.

Have a wonderful summer!
