THE EDITOR’S The month of February is a myriad of colors. For the first time since 2008, Sheshan experienced the simple delights of snowfall, transforming the Tuscan architecture and our beautiful course into a snow-‐white fantasy world. This white backdrop will soon be tinted with prosperous red as millions of our fellow Chinese people celebrates the Chinese New Year and usher in the Year of the Snake! To all our loyal readers, the team here at Sheshan will like to convey our sincerest 新年快乐,万事如意!

Course Maintenance As the weather starts to slowly warm up, we should experience fewer frost
delays through the month. Temperatures are still too cold for grass growth, as
such, the rough will remain dormant and both the greens and the fairways will
be continue to be cut less frequently compared to the warmer months. As
March nears, we should continue to see the temperatures increase and
experience an overall increase in growth rate on the course.
As the temperature warms up, we will start to see the rough become greener
and fairways becoming fuller and lusher. The growth rate is predicted to be
fairly slow until April/May when the golf course will return to excellent play
conditions.
There are many new trees being planted on the golf course as well. Most of
them are being transplanted from the New LinYin Road, which is currently
under construction. Some of these trees will come in to play occasionally and
many will improve the overall aesthetics of the golf course.
Yours sincerely, Gavin Eckford Director of Golf

Aye Aye Captain! Daniel Wong
Likewise for Tom Watson of Team
United States of America and Paul
McGinley of Team Europe, the weight on
their shoulders quadrupled from the
responsibilities as the new 2014 Ryder
Cup captains. Both Tom Watson and Paul
McGinley are veteran golfers with many
years of professional golfing experience,
making waves in the world of golf over
the decades. Tom Watson was reputed as
the most powerful player to ever
challenge Jack Nicklaus’ supremacy and
is counting on his past experiences to lift
the trophy on behalf of millions of Team
USA fans. Coincidentally, Watson was
also captain of the last U.S team to win in
Europe at Belfry!
What do soccer star David Beckham,
South African rugby legend Francois
Pienaar and basketball heartthrob Kobe
Bryant have in common? Apart from the
fact that they are extremely successful
and famous sportsman in their respective
sporting fields, these fine gentlemen are
also the strongman who have lead their
sports teams into countless battles. A
position synonymous with the values of
courage, inspiration, discipline and of
course, leadership the role of a captain is
perhaps the most important part of any
sports team. More than a title of fame and
glory, the team captain is the pillar of
support, the source of motivation for his
fellow athletes and the steward of the
team’s development towards victory and
excellence.
A face-‐off between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus back in Watson’s heyday!
A newly appointed captain McGinley
Tom Watson is honored and optimistic
saying that he had waited “for about 20
years to get the call” while Irishman Paul
McGinley is counting on the support from
his players including World No. #1 Rory
McIlroy, Ian Poulter, Luke Donald and
Justin Rose to retain Europe’s win with
similar composure and tenacity displayed
by José María Olazábal. Fellow Irishman
Rory has thrown in his support behind
McGinley’s captaincy and was elated
when he was finally appointed. He
tweeted “common sense prevailed in the
end… Paul McGinley 2014 Ryder Cup
Captain! Couldn’t be happier for him!”
With the appointment of the respective
team captains, we await in anticipation for
another clash of the titans in the 2014
Ryder Cup in Gleneagles, Scotland!
Across the Atlantic, newly appointed
Team Europe captain Paul McGinley, is
no stranger to the intensity of the
biennale Ryder Cup tournament. He
famously holed the 10 feet winning putt
for Europe to claim the coveted win at
the Belfry in 2002. McGinley is also the
vice-captain of the triumphant European
team at the recent 2012 Ryder Cup. As if
the pressure of playing isn’t enough,
both Watson and McGinley will the
extra weight (or honor) of managing the
world’s best golfers and manifest what
any captain seek; a team where the whole
is greater than the sum of its parts. In the
face of such stress, both men are excited
and confident to lead their respective
country(s) to greater glory.
Can Tom Watson relieve the moments of bringing home the Ryder Cup?
World No.1 Rory McIlroy is also the No.1 supporter of Paul McGinley’s captaincy!

respective sports teams…

more than a decade from 1998 to 2009. • He made use of his fame to raise

Three Questions for the 2013 PGA Tour Season
Cyrus Janssen
QUESTION #1
TIGER WOODS OR
RORY MCILROY?
It seems that Rory is making all the headlines in golf and setting up the stage to become the sport’s next superstar. His 2012 season was remarkable and makes all of us wonder who will have the better season in 2013? Tiger made big strides in 2012 and produced a great season, however his play was sometimes erratic as he struggled with consistency. Rory also experienced some down times in the middle of the year but got hot at the end and won 3 times within 4 weeks to finish 2012. It will be interesting to see how playing with Nike clubs will affect Rory’s game. I’m sure a player with his level of talent should be able to adjust quickly. Tiger is well placed to start the season strong and make a good run at a 5th green jacket at Augusta, while Rory will play a little hotter at the end of the year as he did in 2012. I expect big years from both guys but think McIIroy will edge out Tiger overall for the better 2013!
Everyone in the world of golf knows Tiger Wood’s great objective in life. Surpass 18 major championships – the record set by Jack Nicklaus, the greatest golfer of all time. Can you believe that 2013 will mark the 5-year anniversary since Tiger Woods last won a major championship? Yes it is hard to believe but over the past five seasons Tiger has experienced some of the greatest lows any golfer can face – a painful divorce, numerous knee injuries, and a complete overhaul of his swing. The burning question remains, “is Tiger back?”. His 2012 season certainly indicates that he is moving in the right direction with three quality wins at high profile tournament courses. Many people debate if Tiger can surpass Jack’s record. In my opinion 2013 is a vital year for Tiger and one that he must win a major at two of this year’s venues: The Masters, Augusta National (4 Time Champion) The British Open, Carnoustie (T7 and T12 in previous two appearances)
QUESTION #2 Will Tiger win a Major in 2013?
This is a question that is very important for all of us here at Sheshan, since our very own golf club will be host to the 2013 WGC-HSBC Champions event, the very first PGA Tour event in history of golf in China. Even though we have hosted this tournament an impressive 7 times before this year’s version will prove to be extra special for several reasons. With an increase in prize money, and official status on both the PGA and European Tours, the 2013 WGC-HSBC will become one of the best golf events in the world. I except to see some new faces from the PGA Tour making their way to Sheshan this fall. Players like Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, and all the stars of the European Tour will surly make the journey to our beloved course. We are all very excited and look forward to hosting a Chinese lucky number “8th” edition of the tournament on the Oct 31 to Nov 3, 2013!
QUESTION #3
What will the first PGA
Tour Event in Mainland
China be like?
Playing a ball out of a water hazard
The next time you play and the ball is finished
within a water hazard, you are allowed under the
rules of golf to attempt to play the ball out
without penalty… However, below are 2 possible
rules that could come into play if you attempt this
shot!
If you attempt to play a stroke out of a water hazard and fail to hit
the ball away, it will count as 1 stroke and you will be entitled to
proceed in accordance with the water hazard rule (with 1 penalty
stroke). The site of the last stroke becomes not only the
appropriate spot in the water hazard but also the site where you
played your last stroke outside of the hazard.
Ball played from a water hazard …… and hit into the water – Rule 26
Ball played from a water hazard …… and hit out of bounds or lost – Rule 26
If, however, you have hit your ball out of the water hazard and have
either lost the ball or hit it out of bounds, you have to drop a ball,
with 1 penalty stroke, on the site of the last stroke. Alternatively,
you could also accept another 1 stroke penalty and proceed in
accordance with the water hazard rule.
