History ofthe
Institution
District Institute of Education and Training also known as was established by the Government of India on July7, 1993 under the Third phase in order to strengthen the teacher education at elementary level in Erode
District DIET which is 20 km away Erode, has been a central force in adding efficient and effective elementarylevel teachers to school education in Erode District through Pre-service and In-service trainings. Since 1995,
20 batches of teachers have been produced by the DIET and around 75% among them were placed inGovernment primary and middle schools. During its 23 years of service to teacher education as well as school
education, DIET has the unique distinction of enabling 50 part-time vocational teachers, who had beenworking on a consolidated pay, to get regular appointment in Government schools with the scale of pay onpar with that of the elementary teachers through its two-month training conducted on Child Psychology and
Pedagogy in 1997. During the same year, 60 unemployed, B. T. qualified teachers belonging to theScheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities were provided with training on Child Psychology andMethodology to help them get regular posts as B.T. Assistants in Government Middle Schools throughout
Tamil Nadu. In 1999, drop-out students, who had studied up to eighth standard, were given special trainingto help them appear for Class X board examination directly and 500 students benefited from this training
provided by the DIET. As directed by the Government of Tamil Nadu, two-year regular course was conductedfor 862 teachers, whose diploma from unrecognized institutions got disqualified, so as to redress their woes
of unemployment. These three batches appeared for the examinations in the years 2002, 2004 and 2007 andcame out with flying colors securing pass percentage of 90, 88 and 99 respectively. In 2014, special coaching
to face Teacher Eligibility Test was offered to Visually Challenged B. T. qualified candidates in the subjectsTamil, English and History.Apart from carrying out educational research projects, DIET faculty are involved in
guiding school teachers in conducting action researches and more than 1000 such action researches havebeen guided over the years. INDICS, which is a self-assessment record to be maintained by the school
teachers based on the performance indication prescribed by NCTE has been introduced in the current yearand it is monitored by the DIET.
