PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3 PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3

Dear Brothers and Sisters Today is Good Shepherd Sunday. The Church meditates on these words of the Lord: I am the Good Shepherd. Also, today is the world day of prayer for vocations, the purpose of which is to publically fulfill the Lord's instruction to, "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into His harvest" . Thus, we are to intensify our prayers and efforts in direction to this concern of the Good Shepherd. We cannot remain indiffer-ent, or unaware of the great need the Church has of many and holy priests and religious. Not in vain has He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few”. Therefore, we must seriously examine our life and ask ourselves: what am I doing to cooperate with the increase of laborers for the Lord’s harvest? Do I ever fall on my knees or let the Rosary beads pass through my fingers with this divine intention in my heart? Moreover, let us pray that the laborers may have a heart like the heart of the Good Shepherd. The duty of a good shepherd, says Saint Thomas Aquinas, is charity; therefore Christ said: The good shep-herd gives his life for his sheep. Now, one of the obstacles in relation to the shortage of vocations in our times, is the lack of charity, lack of willingness to give one’s own life for others. This is what a priest or religious does. While he could have chosen a life for himself, he chooses instead a life for others. It is true, however, as Saint Thomas says, that we are to know the difference between a good and a bad shepherd: the good shepherd cares for the welfare of his flock, but the bad shepherd cares only for his own welfare. The Good Shepherd does not demand that shepherds lay down their lives for a real flock of sheep. But every spiritual shepherd must endure the loss of his bodily life for the salvation of the flock, since the spiritual good of the flock is more important than the bodily life of the shepherd, when danger threatens the salvation of the flock. This is why the Lord says: The good shepherd lays down his life, that is, his physical life, for his sheep; this he does because of his authority and love. Both, in fact, are required: that they should be ruled by him, and that he should love them. The first without the sec-ond is not enough. Christ stands out for us as the example of this teaching: If Christ laid down his life for us, so we also ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. Specially those who are called to work at the harvest of the Lord. God bless you all

Copyright © J. S.
