HOD’s message

I take the privilege to announce that the Department of

Civil Engineering of JEC is publishing the second issue,

volume 2 of Retrospect, the quarterly newsletter of

CED. This issue of retrospect covers all the significant

events events that has taken place in the department from 1st April to 30th June,

2019. I wish my best wishes to the advisor and editors of Retrospect for

successful future publication of the newsletter.

DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES

The department conducted Class Test – II from 3rd to 9th April, 2019

as a part of continuous internal evaluation process for B.E. students.

On 6th April, 2019 Civil Engineering Department conducted a

“Felicitation Ceremony” for the first three rank holders of 3rd, 5th and

7th semester examination 2018, 8th semester examination 2018 and

GATE 2019 qualified students.

Survey Camp for B.E 4th Semester was conducted from 26th April to

1st May 2019.

A departmental meeting was held on 30th April, 2019 for discussing

the progress of CO wise marking and NBA visit preparation.

The department conducted Class Test – III from 10th to 15th May,

2019 as a part of continuous internal evaluation process for B.E.

students.

A hands on training on total station and on mix design was organized

on 16th and 17th May 2019 for 6th semester B.E students.

Mr. Koushik Kalita and Mrs. Abhigna Bhatt coordinated the event.

Dr. Arup Bhattacharjee, Dr. Sulaem M. Laskar and Mr. Abhijeet

Hazarika were also present for smooth conduction of the event.

An industrial visit to water treatment plant was organized on 16th

and 17th May 2019 for 6th semester B.E students. Mr. Rituparna

Goswami was the coordinator and was assisted by Dr. Arup

Bhattarjee, Dr. Nayanmoni Chetia and Ms. Joba Goswami.

A one day technical talk on “Application of IS codes on Earthquake

resistant structures & ductile detailing” was organized on 18th May,

2019 for 6thsem B.E civil engineering students. The event was

coordinated by Dr. Nayanmoni Chetia and was assisted by

Mr. Baharul Hussain as joint coordinator.

An industrial visit to railway station (Mariani Jn.) was organized on

18th May 2019 for B.E. 6th Semester civil engineering students.

Dr. Achyut Das was the coordinator and was assisted by Mr. Koushik

Kalita as joint coordinator.

B.E. 4th Sem B.E students were taken for an industrial visit to road

construction site (NH 37) and building construction site (JEC new

auditorium) on 18th May 2019. Mr. Utpal Ray and Ms. Marlina

Gowalla coordinated the event and were assisted by Mr. Koushik

Kalita, Mr. Pranjal Sarma and Mr. Baharal Hussain and Mr. Nihir Boro

as joint coordinator.

The departmental mid semester faculty feedback was conducted on

27th April 2019.

The online departmental end semester feedback on faculty and

course was conducted on 21st May, 15th June and 22nd June 2019 for

6th, 4th and 8th semester B.E. students respectively.

A Technical Talk on “Reinforced Soil Retaining Structures” By

Dr. Arup Bhattacharjee was organized for 8th Semester B.E students

on 12th June 2019. Dr. Arup Bhattacharjee was the coordinator and

was assisted by Ms. Marlina Gowalla as joint coordinator.

DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES

A Technical Talk on “River Erosion and Its Control in

Brahmaputra Valley (Upper Assam Reach)” by Dr. Prasanna K.

Khaund for 8thSem B.E students was organized on 12th June

2019. Dr. Khaund was the coordinator and was assisted by Mr.

Baharul Hussain as joint coordinator.

B.E. 8th semester civil engineering students were taken for an

industrial visit to river training site at Neematighat was on 13th

June, 2019 in collaboration with Water Resource Investigation

Department, Govt. of Assam. Dr. Prasanna Kr. Khaund was the

coordinator and Mr. Rituparna Goswami and Ms. Joba Goswami

were the supporting members.

A one day industry expert talk on “Reservoir Optimization” by

Er. Pranab Das, NRL was organized on 15th June 2019 for 8th

Semester B.E civil engineering students. The talk was

coordinated by Dr. Mrinal Kr. Dutta and was assisted by Mrs.

Abhigna Bhatt as joint coordinator.

A one day industry expert talk on “Industrial Building” by Er.

Sujit Kr. Singh, NRL was organized on 15th June 2019 for 8th

Semester B.E civil engineering students. The talk was

coordinated by Mr. Pranjal Sarma and was assisted by Ms.

Prasanty Borah as joint coordinator.

A one day industry expert talk on “Industrial pollution Control”

& “Job Opportunity in Environmental Engineering” by Dr.

Shantanu Kr Dutta CPCB (GOI), for 8th Semester B.E students

was organized on 17th June 2019. The talk was coordinated by

Dr. Atanu Kumar Dutta and was assisted by Mr. Utpal Ray as

joint coordinator.

The viva voce of Mini Project for 6th semester B.E. students was

held on 17th June 2019.

On 18th and 19th June 2019 general viva and for B.E. 8th

semester students was conducted.

On 21st and 22nd June 2019 Project Viva for B.E. 8th semester

students was conducted.

FACULTY ACTIVITIES

Dr. A. K. Dutta received a project grant of worth Rs. 6,90,000/- on “Seismic vulnerability of traditional

stilted house in flood plains of Assam” under RPS-NER, AICTE.

Dr. A.K. Dutta, associate professor, JEC acted as a reviewer for SN Applied Science which is a multi-

disciplinary, peer-reviewed journal published by Springer Nature.

Dr. S.M. Laskar, assistant professor, JEC along with Prof. Sudip Talukdar, IITG contributed towards

development of the online Buying Guides and Material Calculator for the online construction material

buying site ‘www.brick2wall.com’.

A research paper “A study on the performance of damaged RC members repaired using ultra-fine slag

based geopolymer mortar” authored by Dr. S.M. Laskar, JEC and Prof. S. Talukdar, IITG has been

accepted for publication in the journal “Construction and Building Material” published by Elsevier.

Prof. P.K. Khaund attended a dissemination workshop

entitled “Morphological Studies of River Brahmaputra,

Subansiri and Pagladiya using Remote Sensing

Technique” organized by department of Civil Engineering,

IIT Guwahati at IIT Guwahati on 3rd May 2019.

Mr. K. Kalita, Mr. B. Hussain, Dr. S.M. Laskar, Mr. N. Boro,

Mr. U. Ray, Mrs. A. Bhatt and Ms. M. Gowalla attended a

one day workshop on writing research proposal under

TEQIP III organized on 7th May 2019 at Jorhat Engineering

College.

Dr. A.K. Dutta delivered a guest talk on “National

Technology Day” in All India Radio, Guwahati in the

Program “Aaji Puwa” on 11th May, 2019 at 7:15 am.

A research paper “Behaviour of two-tiered geosynthetic

reinforced soil walls” authored by Dr. A. Bhattacharjee,

JEC and Mr. M. Amin, LEA Associates South Asia Pvt. Ltd,

has been published in the journal “INAE Letters, an official

journal of the Indian National Academy of Engineers”

published by Springer Singapore on 14th May 2019.

Dr. A. Bhattacharjee acted as a reviewer for the Springer

published journal “Earthquake Engineering and

Engineering Vibration”.

Prof. P.K. Khaund and Dr. A. Bhattacharjee attended BOS

Civil Engineering meeting held at ASTU, Guwahati, on 28th

May 2019.

Dr. S.M. Laskar has been conferred the degree of Doctor of

Philosophy in Civil Engineering by IIT Guwahati on 12th

June 2019.

Mrs. A. Bhatt and Ms. M. Gowalla attended a faculty

development program on advanced digital pedagogy,

form 24th June to 28th June 2019 at IIT Madras, organized

by TLC, IIT Madras under TEQIP III.
