IT’S FRIDAY – BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! This is the refrain from a famous Tony Campolo sermon, where Tony first empha-sizes the dark days of the cross for Jesus, not to mention our own dark days of seem-ing defeat and despair, followed by the great ‘BUT’ of the fact of Easter’s nearness (“Sunday’s Coming!”). This of course is also an appropriate phrase to lift up at this time, as most of us will likely be reading this newsletter article a couple weeks be-fore Holy Week, where our Lenten journey with Jesus is about to reach its dramatic end, first on the cross in shame and agony outside the city’s gate, BUT THEN in tri-umphant resurrection glory outside the tomb of death that could not hold our Lord. So let us walk with Jesus, even as he walks with us, through the Valley of the Shad-ow of Death and back again, to the Land of the Living. For he will indeed carry us when we cannot carry ourselves. He will restore life to our lifeless limbs, hope to our hurting hearts, and joy to our jangled joints.

Now the green blade rises from the buried grain,

Love lives again, that with the dead has been:

Love is come again, like wheat arising green.

--John M.C. Crum (1872-1958) I hope to see you Palm/Passion Sunday, April 14, as well as Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. See details elsewhere in this newsletter. And . . . in anticipation of that Great Easter Sunday April 21st that bookends Holy Week . . . Christ IS Risen! He Is Risen, Indeed! Pastor Paul

EXAMINATION OF

CONSCIENCE Lent is the time of year when God calls us to prepare our hearts and to purify our souls

so that we are more grateful for our Lord’s death on the cross and more ready to receive the Lord Jesus in his glorious coming at Easter. There’s no time to delay. The Bible says, “Behold, now

salvation” (2 Cor. 6:2). During this Lenten season, every day we are in-vited to make a good examination of conscience by asking ourselves some or all of these ques-tions:

• Is there something I can do to get closer to God?

• Is there something I can do to know God better and to love God more?

• Is there some way I can increase my desire for prayer?

• Is there some way I can rekindle that fire of divine love that might have gone out in my life?

• Is there some way I can rid myself of the spiritual mediocrity, the spiritual indiffer-ence that I find myself in so much of the time?

• Is there something I can give up?

• Is there something in my life right now that is not pleasing to Almighty God?

• Is there some sin that I am holding on to?

• Is there some habitual sin that is separating my heart from God’s loving grace?

• Is there something I need to confess?

• Am I crucifying our Lord all over again by persistently continuing in certain sins?

After each such examination of conscience, here is a prayer you may choose to pray: Lord, let there be less of me and more of you.

Let me say no to my will and yes to yours. God,

give me the grace to love you more today than

yesterday and more tomorrow than today.

Amen.

HOLY HUMOR SUNDAY

ACCOMPANIES YOUTH WORSHIP

AT ST. JOHN APRIL 28! St. John will be bringing a bit of “Holy Humor Sunday” to both services on Sunday, April 28th—our second year in a row. If you have any jokes or other suggestions to bring humor to our worship that morning that you’d like to submit, send them to Jamie in the office ([email protected]). And by all means, plan now on attending! Let the “days of joy and laughter” abound!

WHY HOLY HUMOR SUNDAY? Rev. Tom Harder, co-pastor at Lorraine Av-enue Mennonite Church, said most members accept the theological justification for holding the church’s fifth annual Holy Humor Sunday service. “God delights in our laughter and receives it as an act of worship,” Harder said. “The service continues the Easter story. We’re celebrating the greatest practical joke of all time: God over-turned death.” Rev. Lois Harder, the church’s co-pastor, said, “The idea of it is that God, in fact, had the last laugh over death.”

WHAT IS A TENEBRAE SERVICE? The service of Tenebrae, meaning “darkness” or “shadows,” has been practiced by the church since medieval times. Once a service for the monastic community, Tenebrae later became an important part of the worship of the com-mon folk during Holy Week. We join Chris-tians of many generations throughout the world in using the liturgy of Tenebrae. Tenebrae is a prolonged meditation on Christ’s suffering. Readings trace the story of Christ’s passion, music portrays his pathos, and the power of silence and darkness suggests the dra-ma of this momentous day. As lights are extin-guished, we ponder the depth of Christ’s suf-

nature of his sacrifice as we hear the over-

the return of the small but persistent flame of the Christ candle at the conclusion of the ser-vice, we anticipate the joy of ultimate victory.

LENTEN SUPPERS AND WORSHIP St. John has resumed the Lenten tradition of gathering together for a light supper followed by worship. All suppers run 5:15 to 6:15 p.m., while worship starts at 6:20 p.m. This year different teams/groups of people around St. John will be helping with the preparation, serv-ing and clean up of the meal. In addition to bringing our teams closer together through ser-vice, this has the added benefit of giving our regular Sharing the Joy servants a bit of a break during Lent. Here is the remaining schedule (with thanks to all who are helping!): 4/3 - Sharing the Joy - lasagna and garlic bread 4/10 - Council - taco bar

SEE THE LAST SUPPER COME

ALIVE This powerful presentation lasts just over an hour, with each disciple giving a soliloquy of his life with Jesus, leading up to the moment at the Passover Supper when Jesus tells them, “One of you will betray me.” Hymns will be sung between every two soliloquies. This dra-ma is a thought provoking look at what might have been going through the minds of each of the men who were the closest disciples of Je-sus. The intent of the presentation is to chal-lenge everyone in the audience to examine their own relationship with our Lord Jesus. As each of the disciples ponder, “Is it I?” we pray that you also consider those thoughts. Here are three dates and locations if you are interested in experiencing it: Sun. March 31, 7pm at Emmanuel Assembly ,

5112 Moeller Rd, Fort Wayne, 46806

Sun. April 7, 7pm at Pathways Christian Church in Harlan, IN

Sun. April 14, 7pm at South Pleasant United

Methodist Church, North Manchester

ART OF NEIGHBORING REUNION If you participated in a small group study of “The Art of Neighboring” book by Jay Pathak and Dave Runyon, you are invited to join your fellow participants for an “Art of Neighboring” reunion on Saturday, April 13, 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. in room 105 at the church. We will share a light lunch of pizza and salad while we reminisce, reflect and reconsider what God may be calling us to in the next chapter of neighboring well with those God has placed near us. Please RSVP by Monday, April 8 to [email protected] or by calling the church office (426-5751), for planning pur-poses. Thanks!

CONGREGATIONAL LENTEN JOURNEY CONTINUES– THE GOSPEL OF LUKE For most of March, since Lent began March 6th, much of the congregation has been reading through the Gospel of Luke together—either individually or as part of a small group. Others have taken up the invitation to come to Wednesday worship—and possibly the meal beforehand. Still others are supplementing their Bible reading with a devotional book written by Bible scholar, pas-tor and author Tom Wright called Lent for Everyone. Here’s a breakdown of how many have signed up for each of these challenges:

• 60 reading the Gospel of Luke

• 50 also reading the NT Wright book

• 35 participating in four small groups

• 23 attending worship

Thanks to all who have signed up and are participating in our 2019 Lenten Challenge! May God bless our reading of the Gospel of Luke!

Pastor Paul was fortunate to be able to participate in the “Preachers in Sneakers” halftime event at the Mad Ants basketball game Friday, March 8th. He was even MORE fortunate not to get injured! Although he DID fall down once trying to defend the oncoming player! Live generously, indeed.

St. John held what may well have been Fort Wayne’s FIRST EVER Fix It Fair on March 23rd. We had about 50 people walk through our doors and wound up fixing / sewing / sharpening all SORTS of things. Thanks to all who helped make this event possible—especially Dennis Robinson, the overall champion of the event. Well done, all!

STATIONS OF THE CROSS AT ST JOHN ON GOOD FRIDAY On Good Friday, April 19th, you will have the opportunity to reflect more deeply upon the passion and death of Jesus through the Stations of the Cross, set up throughout the sanctuary and narthex. Countless Jesus followers throughout the centuries have found this to be an intense and emotional experience. St. John’s experience will be available from noon to 3:00, the time during which the Bible tells us Jesus hung on the cross, “for us and for our salvation,” as we confess in the Nicene Creed. Each station will have an image, a symbol and several devotions you may read, all intended to aid your meditation upon the death of Jesus that we dare call “Good.” The devotions will primarily come from Skye Jethani, a pastor and executive editor of Leadership Journal.

ELCA Regional Gift Planner Chris Burnette came to St. John on Sun-day, March 24th to present on es-tate planning and planned giving. If you’d like to learn more, includ-ing how you might include St. John and M&M’s Opportunity Fund in your giving, you may con-tact Chris directly at (513) 509-8332 or [email protected].

M & M’S IN THE NARTHEX?

That’s right, we now – and for the foreseeable future – have an M&M candy dispenser set up in the narthex, thanks to the generosity of one of our members. It’s there to remind us of M&M’s Opportunity Fund and our challenge – issued by our own M&M’s, Martha and Mike – to make extra, early principal payments on our loan in order to reduce our interest pay-ments and free up more money for M&M: Ministry and Mission. A quarter gets you a handful. In addition to a tasty snack, all profits go toward the Fund. It’s a win-win!

LENTEN COIN FOLDERS If you have been collecting coins in those Lenten Coin Folders that were out at the Wel-come Center, thank you! During Holy Week and on into Easter, you may put them in the offering plate. All proceeds go to Well-spring's Food Bank. So on behalf of these folk . . . thank you!

OUR NEWSLETTER IS AVAILABLE

ONLINE, VIA EMAIL, AND AT

CHURCH

For several years now, St. John’s entire news-letter has been posted as a PDF file on our website (www.stjohnluth.com). We also now send this PDF file to those who are signed up on our Google groups email list, or who specif-ically requested it. In addition, hard copies are available at church at the Welcome Center and in the office no later than the first Sunday of each month. (We still mail copies to our homebound members and a small number of folk who have requested it.) The face behind all of these offerings is that of our newsletter editor (and church secretary), Jamie Robbins. Thanks, Jamie!

ARE YOU RECEIVING THIS

NEWSLETTER VIA EMAIL?

If you have an email address and you are not yet receiving the newsletter in this fashion, please email ([email protected]) or call Jamie in the office (426-5751) ASAP, so we can add your email to our group. Thank you!

THINKING OF JOINING

ST. JOHN’S COMMUNITY

OF BELOVED DISCIPLES? St. John’s next New Member Orientation will be held April 29 and May 6, two successive Mondays, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. each evening. This is intended for anyone who wants to grow in their understanding and practice of the Chris-tian faith in general (non-member or member), and as a follower of Jesus at and around St. John in particular. Those non-members attending the orientation will be invited to join St. John on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12th at the 11:00 a.m. wor-ship, following a brief introduction and wel-come with congregational leaders at 10:25 a.m. in Room 103. If you’re interested in attending this orientation, please register your interest with Jamie Robbins in the church office (426-5751).

GOING GREEN FOR EARTH DAY In honor of Earth Day on Monday, April 22, on the following Sunday, April 28th, St. John will be reducing its 9:00 a.m. bulletin paper produc-tion by 50% or more and eliminating the bulle-tin from the 11:00 a.m. service (we’re encour-aging folk to use the screens). We also remind you that every Sunday there is a recycling bin at the main exit for anyone who would like to re-cycle their bulletin and/or Weekly. At the same time, we realize this is no more than a drop in the bucket of whole earth/life stewardship. So . . . what else might YOU do as one of God’s stewards? May God bless these and all efforts we un-dertake to be good stewards of God’s creation!

GOOD SAMARITAN FUND

RUNNING LOW

As the above announcement states, our means of helping folk with food vouchers, bus passes and other assistance is running low. If funds run out, we will now longer be able to offer further assistance to those who need it. Please consider a direct gift to the Fund itself. For questions about how we steward the Fund, or to see a copy of our Good Samaritan Fund Policy, contact either Tony or Pastor Paul di-rectly or through the office (426-5751). Thanks!

Dates & times of the sale are: Friday July 12th & 19th 6 PM — 9 PM Saturday July 13th & 20th 8 AM — 5 PM Sunday July 14th 12 PM — 5 PM This is a big job with big rewards for the ministries of our church! Consider donating a few (or more than a few!) hours to help sort, price, & stage items before it starts. We also need folks to take money, walk the floor, and clean up each day. While you’re doing your spring cleaning set aside your extra shopping bags and newspapers for us!

ADDITIONAL HELP NEEDED THIS YEAR Set up day for the sale is coming soon. This involves setting up tables, shelves, bookcases, clothes racks, etc. If you can lend any time to help, that would be great! If we can get 10 or so people to help it shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours. More details coming soon! I’m also looking for someone to be in charge of the tools/sporting goods/garden room. I have a list of volunteers that have helped out in the past and I’ll help you in whatever way you need to make it happen. Let me know!

HANGERS! HANGERS! HANGERS! If you are donating clothes that are already on hangers, please bring them on the hangers! We’ll have boxes of hangers available (plastic tube hanger and wire hangers) for you to replace the hangers you bring us. Please take the hangers that match what you brought, i.e. take wire hangers if you brought wire hangers, plastic tube hangers if you brought plastic tube hangers, etc. This is going to save our clothing people a TON of time hanging up clothing and should save you time by not having to take them off the hangers. If you don’t need the hangers, you don’t have to take replacements. We can always use extra hangers! Clothes not on hanger can still be donated!

Keep your eye on the weekly and monthly newsletters or call or e-mail Jay Heare (260.249.8229 / [email protected]) for more information.
