December already?? As we enter the holiday season, the month that brings our chronological year to an end and almost marks the
midway point of the 2019-2020 school year, it brings us to a moment to pause and reflect. I always said that the year 2020 is the year
we will all see clearly (OK that was a bad joke). I always find this time of year a time to reflect on how I can be a better parent and
educator.
You have heard me state in the past, I am always looking for ways to have our children increase their lifelong health, happiness, suc-
cess, and joy in life. The following passage was a good reminder for me to take the time to be more positive, patient, and intentional
in my interactions with my children and the students who I interact with on a daily basis at Edison Middle School.
"I got two A's" the small boy said. His voice was filled with glee. His father very bluntly asked, "Why didn't you get three?"
Mom, I've got the dishes done," The girl called from the door. Her mother very calmly said, "Did you sweep the floor?"
The children in the house next door Seemed happy and content.
The same things happened over there, But this is how it went:
"I got two A's" the small boy said. His voice was filled with glee.
His father proudly said, "That's great; I'm glad you belong to me."
"Mom, I've got the dishes done," The girl called from the door.
Her mother smiled and softly said, "Each day I love you more."
Children deserve a little praise For tasks they're asked to do, If they're to lead a happy life,
So much depends on you.
Thank you for being part of our Edison Family! Soar to new heights!

Parents:
Currently, report cards are sent home with the student. The exception is the semester
and end of the year report card which are mailed home. Beginning after semester in
January, report cards will no longer be sent home with the student. Only the semester
and end of year report cards will be mailed home. Parents can view their child’s progress using Parent
Portal. We encourage all parents to utilize the portal. This is a GREAT tool to use for many different
things. If you are a legal guardian, you can have access to Parent Portal. If you don’t have an account, see
page 5 (the next page) for instructions on how to sign-up.

ing their class choices into Infinite Campus.

discuss course selections and obtain a parent signature. Students will need to return the
signed and completed registration form by January 10, 2020, to their science teacher.

Notes from the School Nurses
Flu season is coming! There already have been a few cases in the United
States. The CDC recommends getting your flu shot by the end of Octo-
ber. Remember, it takes 2 weeks for your body to make antibodies to pro-
tect you from the flu after receiving your flu shot.
Last year, 138 children died from the flu in the United States and most of
them were healthy without any high-risk medical conditions. Children
who receive the flu vaccine decrease the risk of flu-associated death by
65%.
You should keep your child home if they have a fever. Remind your child to cover their nose and mouth
with a tissue when they cough or sneeze. Tissues should be thrown in the trash immediately after use and
hands should be washed with soap.
Places to get your flu shot:
*Your family doctor
*Local pharmacies, usually at no cost with most insurances
*Brown County Public Health, which has free flu shots for children who are eligible
*A limited supply of flu vaccine available for adults 19 years and older at a cost of $30
*Call Public Health 448-6445 for an appointment

Want to get involved at Edison
but just not sure how?
Parent Network is the perfect way to make a great connection between home and school. There are many opportunities to help throughout the school year and you can pick your level of involvement. The easiest ways to learn about what’s going on or to find out ways you can help are:
Attend evening Parent Network Meetings. They’re very casual and everyone is invited. The next meeting is on December 3 at 6:30pm in the quiet cafeteria.
Put your name on the Parent Network email list. Periodically you’ll receive messages with re-minders and requests for help. No pressure…just opportunities.
To be added to the list, please send an email to Leah Bergstrom: [email protected]
Edison Community: Let's gather together for a beverage, appetizer, or a meal on Monday, January 27th from 4-8 pm at Tucson's Restaurant, located at

Emergency Notifications - Stay Informed
To ensure every parent has the most accurate contact information in an emergency situation, parents must
keep contact information up-to-date in Infinite Campus. (If your phone number or address has changed, please
contact the school secretary.) The District contracts with School Messenger for its parent notification system,
which enables the District to send bulk emails, automated phone calls and text messages to parents, guardians
and other adults that are identified as emergency contacts. The District only uses text messaging in limited
circumstances such as emergency situations, school closures/delays, and bus accidents/delays.
How to receive text messages
To receive text messages, text “opt-in” or “subscribe” to 67587. If in the future you do not receive a text mes-
sage when you believe you should have, please contact the Help Desk at 920-448-2148 to verify the District
has the cell phone number in Infinite Campus. The Help Desk is available Monday -Thursday from 6:30 a.m.
– 5:00 p.m. and on Friday from 6:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
District Improved Communication Process During “Secure the Building”
Situations
When community situations arise, as a precautionary measure, law enforcement will direct the District to put a
school or schools in “secure the building - outside situation.” Schools may be in “secure the building” for a
few minutes or it may be for several hours depending on the situation. The District’s and law enforcement’s
highest priority is to ensure the safety of all students.
The District’s website page, Student Safety & Parent Notifications provides information regarding what par-
ents can expect regarding communications during a “secure the building - outside situation” event as well as
other emergency situations.
Specifically for “secure the building - outside situation” events, the District will send a message to parents
through an automated call, email and text message as soon as possible. The message will direct parents/
guardians to the District’s website for updates. The only instances where this will not occur is in the event the
District has removed the school from “secure the building” prior to the message being sent (which may occur
if the situation is very brief). In that instance, parents/guardians will receive a message that their children’s
school had been in “secure the building.” This may be delivered through the District’s notification system or
the school may send a letter home with students (at the elementary level).
Parents should be aware that automated phone calls can take time to deliver and the fastest way to receive in-
formation is through email or text. The District encourages parents and guardians to “opt in” to receive texts.
Learn how at www.gbaps.org/textmessaging.
The District also communicates about “secure the building” situations on its social media accounts. Liking the
District on Facebook or following on Twitter is also a great way to stay informed.
Emergency Notifications - Stay Informed—Continued…..
Not receiving text messages?
During emergency situations and inclement weather, the District will communicate with parents/
guardians through automated phone calls, emails and text messaging. The student information system
pulls cell phone numbers from the mobile number field. In order to receive text messages, parents must
subscribe by opting in. To receive text messages, text “opt-in” or “subscribe” to 67587.
After subscribing, if you are not receiving text messages, it may be that on parent contact information
forms the cell phone number was identified as the “home” number and the mobile number was left
blank. To verify your cell phone number is identified correctly in Infinite Campus, please contact the
Help Desk at 920-448-2148. The Help Desk is available Monday -Thursday from 6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
and on Friday from 6:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Understanding “Secure the Building - Outside Situation”
When community situations arise, as a precautionary measure, law enforcement or the District will deter-
mine to place a school or schools in “secure the building - outside situation.” The community situation
may be a nearby fire, suspicious person in the neighborhood, a police chase, etc.
When a school is notified that it is to “secure the building” for a community situation, students and staff
that are outside for recess, physical education or outdoor learning are directed to enter the building im-
mediately. Doors remain locked and no one is allowed to enter or leave the building once all students are
securely inside.
Within the building the school day will proceed as normal, with the exception that there is no outdoor
recess, open campus (if it’s a high school), or outdoor classes.
The District asks that parents do not drive or walk to the school as this may place them in possible dan-
ger and/or impede law enforcement. If parents have a specific concern (i.e., family emergency) that
needs immediate attention, they should contact the school’s office.
