he first official dog show was held on June 28, 1859 in New-castle England. Only pointers and setters were allowed to
compete. In the beginning the breed standards were lax or nonexistent. The function of a dog show today is for a dog to earn points towards their AKC Championship based on a breed standard.
In 1884 the AKC was established to produce a reliable stud book for all breeds in the United States. Since 1884 dog shows have become big business for the AKC and to increase their revenues, they recently intro-duced the “Grand Championship” to generate more entries at dog shows. Champions that had gone home now were back in the ring looking for that GCH. Rather than coming up with an idea to bring more new fanciers into the oldest sport in America they just brought back existing exhibitors. At many dog shows this year there have been more specials entered than class dogs. Fifteen years ago when I finished my first champion the cost of the aver-
age point was $100. Today it is closer to $300 per point unless you are lucky enough to find a weekend with 4 majors and you win every day. Now wouldn’t we all like that to happen just once in our lives. The dog show experience is kind of like a drug addiction. It sucks you right in. First you are happy with a ribbon, then you want first place, then reserve isn’t good enough, you want winners and then breed and group and BISS or BIS. It’s
never enough. And god forbid you think of specialing your dog, that will cost you tens of thousands of dollars.
I have shown many of my dogs to their championships but when I started my most recent bitch I chose to put her with
a handler because I had a job where I worked 3 out of 4 weekends. So a han-dler seemed like a smart choice.
Now I would be the first to acknowledge my dog’s short comings; not a great head, which reminds me of a comment a handler made many years ago about one of my dogs, He said “now there’s a head that will put you in the toilet” to which I replied well you know we aren’t a head breed. She could also use a little more substance and more times than not she can show you some airplane ears. As a matter of fact my handler has sent me photos of her with the caption ”Tippy playing whippet.” But when you watch her going around the ring there is no ques-tion about her reach and drive and she is clean coming and going. I knew there would be competition out there but there is no such thing as the perfect dog. . So we picked a handler and sent our girl off.The numbers at dog shows were so small that some weekends there weren’t even points. Road trips resulted in expense and boarding bills for weekends were the one point didn’t hold. It took 9 shows to earn 9 points. Then we started searching for majors. More than $500 in entry fees spent on potential majors and then came the 3 major reserves. One spring weekend off to the dog show we went, another one point show where we won the breed.
Now my handler had no intention of show-ing a class dog in the group against some top ranked specials but we convinced him, reminding him that we would probably never see her in the group again. When she got into that group ring it was like a glee member hitting the stage! The mo-ment every owner hopes for, that minute when you dog cocks her head and says “LOOK AT ME!” There we were sucked in again with the Group Two placement.
The first major finally came in mid summer and then “Tipper” and I both came up lame. I tried to convince my self it was sympathetic lameness and that crate rest and limited exercise would do the trick. Seven months later and an expensive vet bill I still had no diagnosis, we were short 1 major and I had a dog that walked around on 3 legs most of the time.My handler recommended a Physical Therapist who worked wonders with many show dogs, so off to the Wizard of Paws we went, a 4 hour round trip drive but finally a diagnosis. A pulled Illioap Soas muscle, which would take some time to
rehab because it was the outside leg which drives the dog around the ring. La-ser treatment, lots of stretching exercises and biking five times a week and more money.
While this journey to finish our bitch was depleting our check books, I took home a male puppy that was too nice to go to a pet home. Our plan was simple, finish our bitch and start the puppy at 6 months. What’s that expression about “the best laid plans….? Now we had 2 times the entries and 2 times the handling bills.I was ready to cut my losses. She was an important part of my breeding program and Championship or not I would breed her. So exactly when had I been sucked into the belief that being a champion made a difference?I asked myself have I finally crossed over the edge? PT for my dog? Soon I was go-ing to need to insure her with Lloyd’s of London. But three and a half month later she felt good to her physical therapist and she looked great from all the road work. Four days of majors coming up, but she hadn’t been on the road or in the ring for months. Who knew where her brain would be? After all we were dealing with a Dalmatian. The weekend dawned sunny and beautiful. The first glimpse of the catalogue showed only 2 bitches in open. Well I thought no trouble getting out of the classes but instead we were 2 out of 2 on day one,
two and three. At least I could say we were second to the winners bitch on day three.Day four dawned overcast and cold with a biting wind. Our bitch was cold, she was all hunched up and shivering and I thought well I could save that handling
fee and pull her, but the she moved around the ring, warmed up and won her class. In she went for winners but she needed to beat four other bitches. I stood there doubting my handler and my dog because after all she had been un-able to make it out of her class the last three days and when I saw them move out of the line my first reaction was that they had been excused. Then I saw them stop at the judge’s table. Rick and Tip-per had done it We had a new Champion. Two majors, 21 points,After the picture was taken, I took her over to the barrel racing ring on the fair-grounds and unclipped her leash, she ran like the wind. Four laps around the ring at top speed something she hadn’t been allowed to do for seven months, yup there was Tippy playing whippet!
The Long Journey to a Championship
The earliest shows focused on the working aspects of the dog and their ability to per-form the job rather than their appearance.
