Can we imagine one may create a self-sustainable satellite system able to photograph the whole of our planet with one-meter resolution on a one-day time?

e-CORCE stand for "e-Continuous Observing system Relayed by Cellular processing Environment"

"e-" since aiming at feeding geocoded information to Internet based mass market operators

"Continuous Observing" since aiming at providing a continuously refreshed view of our planet

"Relayed by Cellular processing Environment" since the whole of the concept is based on the intimate

compound of 3 cellular layer Space,Telecom,Grid

« spécific »e-CORCE is the machine ready to provide the product well fitted to the needs of geo-coded portal of service, means in short:

•1 meter or less because no internaut is interested with blurred pictures (virtual 3D models will soon complement the high resolution maps as happen on MSN site)

• The full Earth cover because any internaut may be interested with the friend car crossing the Sahara or sailing in Indian Ocean.

• From daily to weekly refreshment cycle to keep track of urban activities, human related events or natural hazards,

e-CORCE is a distributed instrument

Three fully integrated technical layers as a unified concept:

■ THE SPACE CELLULAR LAYER:Makes use of a fully automated satellite constellation covering the whole earth in a systematic fashion (“Saturation”). Full cover is achieved typically in a 1 day time with a a 1 meter ground resolution (100 or more units are contemplated)

■ THE TELECOM CELLULAR LAYER:Satellites are able to send immediatly their highly compressed (jpeg) information to ground centres. Telecom operation will be automated and highly simplified in such a way no station operator is required. Use of IP concept will suppress the need for separate TM/TC channels.

■ THE GROUND CELLULAR LAYER (Wide Area Grid) Owing to the enormous quantity of information to be treated in a one day time, all processes will be fully distributed all over the Earth and allow an acceptable local workload. Grid technology is able to carry this organisation keeping in mind the Earth mosaic will never be centralised leading to a “Virtual Earth creatioon” (Looksd like e-Tube technology)

Some technical hints

■ Number of satellites are connected to the swath (eg: 100 satellites/25km swath) but downlink elementary bit rate is the driving factor

■ Oversimplified plateform with littled downgraded situation■ Oversimplified optical instrument:

- relaxed tabilisation and motion compensation (bring more photons) - 2D detectors (Allow more exposure time) - No need to have on board picture creation (alows CCD misalignement and cheap manufacturing)

■ On board orbit position via GPS■ Oversimplified on board process electronic (PC chips and space

qualified peripheral runing under Linux iscontemplated) ■ On board picture compression based on “psycho-visual quality” as

needed by the internauts . More than 30 on board compression under JPEG2000 is evaluated (Makes 15 Mb/s replacing 450Mb/s dowlinks !)

■ On board system access seen as an IP node. (IP satellite concept taking advantage of bi-directional access mixing payload downlink with TM/TC upload.

■ No need to descope clouds or sea surface since treated by the compressor in a dynamic fashion

■ Nearly no on-board buffering (any data not received is lost but redundancy allows it)
