The UC community is coming alive with the return of students, classes, and football to campus. As we transition from Quarters to Semesters and Summer to Fall, as you will read below, it has been a busy Summer on the entrepreneurship front. From hosting an engaging group of young African leaders on campus to the many honors and recognitions for our student entrepreneurs and alumni, you will find a number of stories of interest. You will want to check out Bryan Wolf (BBA '11) and Josh Rudd (BBA '12) making the Empact100 list for their entrepreneurial efforts. Also, please join me in welcoming a new Adjunct Instructor, Catalin Macarie, to the Entrepreneurship faculty this Fall. Macarie brings a wealth of educational, business, and entrepreneurial experience to the classroom. Please take a moment to pause and reflect on the many fascinating stories below and the growing list of outstanding programs supporting students and entrepreneurs in "Network Notes." Matthews, PhD Executive Director UC Center for Entrepreneurship Education & Research Young African Leaders Innovation Summit Welcomed to UC The Greater Cincinnati World Affairs Council hosted an Innovation Summit and Mentoring Partnership with Young African Leaders in June 2012. The University of Cincinnati Center for Entrepreneurship Education & Research Executive Director, Dr. Charles H. Matthews, spoke with the group on campus. This three-week professional development program welcomed more than 60 young African Leaders to the United States, and is sponsored by the US Government in collaboration with the Meridian International Center. The event opened in Washington DC, with some of the leaders travelling to Cincinnati and other cities in the US. Announcing The Bearcat LaunchPad Business Accelerator/Incubator Starting with the new Fall Semester 2012, the Carl H. Lindner College of Business Student Action Team (formerly Tribunal) is excited to announce the re-branding and focus of the Bearcat LaunchPad , a unique business accelerator/incubator concept developed by and run by and for UC students. With tremendous support from LCB faculty members and from Dr. Charles H. Matthews and Dr. Thomas Dalziel of the UC Center for Entrepreneurship in particular, the student team developed a program focused on providing students from all majors an introduction to new venture creation and team building. Up to 15 students will go through a 12-week program during the Fall semester. The program will feature some of the most prominent entrepreneurial minds in Cincinnati and beyond who will share their experience and expertise with the groups. Students will form interdisciplinary teams and each week go through sessions designed to take their ideas and design and refine a business model to take their concept to launch. At the conclusion of the Bearcat LaunchPad program, students will have opportunities to continue their entrepreneurship education via programs offered through the LCB, develop their business further, and/or seek funding for continued development. Student Start-Up Featured on UC Virtual Tour Joshua Rudd, co-founder of Piola Shoes and Lindner College of Business 2012 Alum, along with the Center for Entrepreneurship Education & Research is featured in a video as part of UC's Research Virtual Tour. The virtual tour highlights specific academic programs and their real-world, applied research projects led or conducted by undergraduate and graduate students. Rudd's partner and co- founder, Antoine Burnier-Dechon, was an international student from the Audencia Nantes School of Management, a Lindner College of Business International Programs partner school in Nantes, France. Burnier-Dechon came to the Lindner College of Business for a study abroad course to complete his master's degree. To view the video, click here Josh Rudd and Antoine Burnier- Dechon source materials in the Peruvian Rain Forest Double Honor for Gold Medal Products This past June, Cincy Magazine announced the winners of the 6th Annual MANNY Awards , honoring outstanding manufacturing companies for innovation and best practices in the Tri-state. Gold Medal Products was recognized as one of the "Best Place to Work" in the Tri-State. In addition, Cincy Magazine named Gold Medal Products one of the winners in the "Best Way to Treat Workers" category in their Fifth Annual Best of Cincy Awards. JC Evans (LCB '54) is Chairman of Gold Medal Products Co. and Dan Kroeger, (LCB '74) is President and CEO. Congratulations to Mr. Evans and Mr. Kroeger and the entire Gold Medal team! Empact100 List Names Two UC Alums Bryan Wolf, BBA '11, co-founder, Roads Rivers & Trails and Joshua Rudd, BBA '12, one of the founders of Piola Shoes , were named to the Empact100 list for 2012. This list recognizes the top entrepreneurs in the United States under the age of 30, and revenues over $100,000. Public companies are not eligible. The Empact100 list showed the power of these young entrepreneurs with a combined impact of 2,700 jobs added to the economy with $374 million in total revenue. The E-Center Welcomes Catalin Macarie The Center for Entrepreneurship is pleased to welcome Catalin Macarie, who will be teaching Essentials of Entrepreneurship (ENTR2001) for non- business students this year. Essentials of Entrepreneurship is a core class for the UC|3 Certificate in Innovation Transformation. Macarie is Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Cat Creatives , a professional online marketing, web design and development company located in the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati area and serving clients locally and beyond. He is a visionary, creator, and driver of strategies for business development, both profit and non-profit. Macarie has more than 19 years of experience working in marketing and creative services, sales and customer relationship management, web projects, and business development for both domestic and international markets. He holds a Master of Science in Executive Leadership and Organizational Development at Northern Kentucky University and a Master of Science degree in Engineering Design from the Polytechnic University of Bucharest. He is active on the Northern Kentucky International Trade Association (NKITA) executive board, the Greater Cincinnati Chinese Chamber of Commerce (GCCCC) executive board, and provided valuable assistance for the International Council for Small Business (ICSB) World Conference held in Cincinnati in June 2010. Catalin Macarie Undergraduate Entrepreneurship & Strategy Business Case Competition The Undergraduate Entrepreneurship & Strategy Business Case Competition is a rigorous classroom based undergraduate competition focused on business case analysis. The 2011-2012 1st Place winners were Michael Arnovitz, Teddy Douglass, Nicholas Radel, and Leland Zerbe and 2nd Place winners were Danielle Borman, Jeffrey Beamon, Meghan Yost, and Nicholas Miller. This competition is open to undergraduate entrepreneurship majors in the senior year of their program of study. Participants draw upon their cross-functional skills and use strategy and entrepreneurship consulting tools to provide advice to senior executives in high quality business case studies. Given that many small and medium-sized enterprises struggle to sharpen their focus while pursuing ambitious growth objectives, this year's competition offered students the opportunity to grapple with the challenges of diversification in the context of private for-profit and non-profit organizations. Tackling the complex issues found in the cases used in this year's case competition helped prepare these students to serve actual clients facing similar challenges through our Small Business Institute ® Field Case Program, in which they provided pro bono consulting services to entrepreneurial companies in and around Cincinnati. Said Dalziel, "The students are to be congratulated for the depth of their analysis, the quality of their recommendations and the professionalism of their presentations. They have bright futures ahead of them." The Challenge provides student entrepreneurs with the opportunity to showcase their energy technology and business plans, receive university and industry support and feedback, gain exposure within the venture capital and funding community, and compete for cash prizes to support their technology and business plan. Young African Leaders Innovation Summit Welcomed to UC

Launch Pad Startup Showcase Event

You are invited to attend the 2012 Innov8 for Health Launch Pad Startup Showcase. The showcase is being held on Thursday, August

30, 2012 at the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The schedule of events are:

� Launchpad Showcase Presentations 1:00-3:30 (snacks & soft drinks available)

� Reception and One-on-One Discussions 3:30-5:00 (hors d'ouerves and beverages provided)

The purpose of the showcase is to allow startup businesses to reveal their products that have been transformed, through the Innov8 for Health cycle, from innovative ideas into the next great things in healthcare! During the showcase, accelerator companies will show live demonstrations of the latest software solutions designed to solve real problems in healthcare. This event is open to investors, entrepreneurs, healthcare professionals, and all other interested members of the community. Cincinnati Innovates Award Winners Have UC Connections

Cincinnati Innovates awarded 17 people with 11 innovative ideas $100,000 in cash or in-kind prizes on Thursday, August 16, 2012. The winners will receive marketing and branding help, legal assistance, connections to further their product, and web development/video work. With over 250 online entries, the products ranged from child-tagging devices, mobile applications and nonprofit organizations.

There were a number of UC Connections among the winners. Jon Amster, BA '04, founder of 321-RIDE took the $5,000 Taft Legal Award. Brian and Aletha Tippet, founders of AT Squared and inventors of WoundPAL®, alums of the Cincinnati Creates Companies Program, took the $5,000 Round Pixel Studio Web Design Award. Racquel Redwood, MIN '12, BSBME '12, and her Pengueeni team, took the $2,000 Cooney, Faulkner, Stevens Award. Kristi Vredeveld and Camille Gartner, My Back Pack Tags, took the $1,000 GCVA Early Bird Community Choice Award.

Corporate Executives Band Togetherto Form Cintrifuse

Cincinnati's top CEOs have announced a plan to boost high tech growth in the city by supporting startups and

luring venture capital to the Queen City. The effort is called Cintrifuse. Laura Baverman, The Cincinnati Enquirer, reported the following key components of Cintrifuse: 1) Venture capital of at least $55 million invested by the region's largest institutions to support fast-growing startups and lure new venture investors to town. 2) The leadership of P&G's top global innovation officer, on loan for two years to coordinate the region's innovation activities. 3) A 27,000-square-foot campus in Over-the-Rhine for entrepreneurs, designers, technologists, investors, lawyers, accountants and others to brainstorm, build businesses and take classes.

Bad Girl VenturesAccepting ApplicationsFor Fall 2012 Class

Bad Girl Ventures is recruiting its sixth class of women entrepreneurs, with an application deadline of September 1. Ten new or young companies will be selected to join the nine-week program. The program, for female entrepreneurs, pairs them with counselors and provides weekly seminars on everything from business planning to marketing and accounting.

At the end of the nine week program Bad Girl Ventures will announce the winner of a $25,000 loan to help grow her business.

Austin Allison, Founder, Dotloop,Appears on Cover of

Entrepreneur Magazine

Austin Allison, AAS '08, BSCM '08, is the founder of Dotloop and recently appeared on the cover of Entrepreneur Magazine. DotLoop was founded in 2008, when Allison was a real estate agent and became frustrated with how the transactions and back-and-forth nature of the transactions were handled when negotiating to buy and/or sell real estate. Allison secured almost $3 million in investments from local wealthy individuals to launch the software in November 2009.

More than 200,000 agents (nearly 20 percent of the market) uses DotLoop today. Allison says the value of his investors' shares has grown more than 2,500 percent! The firm has been profitable since April 2011.

Cincinnati Welcomes Venture for America Fellows

Cincinnati welcomed the Venture for America Fellows on a beautiful Friday evening in August for a Cincinnati Red's game at Great American Ballpark. The excitement of being on the Ohio River, attending a sold out game with Pittsburgh, along with the Friday Fireworks compounded a great experience for these recent college graduates.

UC Center for Entrepreneurship Board Members, Bill Cunningham and John Burns, welcomed the Venture for America Fellows to the ball park. "I cannot thank John Burns enough for his providing the perfect venue to welcome the new fellows to Cincinnati," commented Dr. Charles Matthews, E-Center Executive Director. "It was a perfect night for baseball and showcasing Cincinnati's entrepreneurial spirit."

The VFA program is for young, talented college grads to spend two years in the trenches of a start-up with the goal that these graduates will become socialized and mobilized as entrepreneurs moving forward. The 2012 Fellows are in place and partner ventures are set to go in the four different cities.
