We went to our first National
Specialty after having our dogs for
only 2 months. To say we were new
to the sport was the understatement
of the century! We took 2 days to
complete a drive that we would now
make in a day without thinking a thing
about it. We made our reservations
late, so we ended up in the overflow
hotel across the street. While we
were close, it wasn’t the same as
being on the show site.
We had the show schedule, but we
didn’t know about any of the post
show ring activities like Hospitality,
the General Meeting, or the Top
Twenty. We were still trying to figure
out what this dog show thing was
all about and we didn’t know a lot
of people, so we basically did our
own thing. If we weren’t showing in
the morning we took the dogs for a
walk, and usually arrived ringside by
noon. Fortunately for us that first
year, we got to the show in time to
see Winners Dog and Winners Bitch
and we managed to have the sense
to watch all of Best of Breed.
The second year was better. We knew
more people, attended more events,
and watched all of the judging. We’d
just become members of our parent
breed club , so we knew who more
of the dogs where and recognized
more of their breeders. We even
met some people we didn’t know.
We were making progress!
I laugh when I think back to those days
and how much has changed. We now
make our hotel reservations for the
following year when we return home
from the current years festivities.
We’d never think of missing any of
the judging, and usually one of us in
our circle of friends will be ringside
the instant that chairs are set up to
make sure we have good seats. We
look forward to seeing old friends,
catching up on what’s going on,
getting a look at the new crop of
promising youngsters, and seeing
how last year’s batch grew up.
The great thing about the National
Specialty is that there are so many
ways to enjoy it. Bringing youngsters
can be the most fun and the most
exasperating all at the same time.
It is definitely the most work! If you
show in all the events, you are in
the ring at least three times. If the
pups do well, you are in the ring a
lot more than that. For some of the
pups this may be their first trip away
from home, and for some away from
their custodial parents. You find out
really quickly who has been doing
more than giving lip service to crate
training, who travels well, and who
in the group thinks they need to be
up with the chickens. Puppies can be
humbling, and you never know who
in the group is going to decide to
conveniently forget everything they
ever knew about being a show dog.
And they usually keep it a secret until
you walk into the ring. Hopefully you
don’t have a barker in the group, and
heaven forbid any of the girls decide
to come into season!
For me, it is harder to watch my dogs
being shown than it is to be in the ring
myself. My husband showed the last
batch of puppies at our most recent
National Specialty, and I am sure that
I wore a hole in the carpet pacing
back and forth outside the ring. And
then due to circumstances we never
imagined would happen, I had to
hand my special off to a friend to be
shown in Best of Breed. I became
that person you see at every show.
You know the one. They are either
hiding behind a pole, peeping over
someone’s shoulder or lurking around
the other side of a doorjamb, ever
vigilant that they remain hidden from
their dog while it is in the ring. My
friend smartly covered the dog’s eyes
when I had to return to the ring with
one of our other dogs. Somehow we
got by.
If you don’t have dogs to show,
ring stewarding can be a lot of fun.
You provide a much needed and
appreciated service to both the judge
and the exhibitors and you get the
best seat in the house to watch the
judging. Nerves get to the best of
us and you’d be surprised at what
seasoned veterans of the ring can
forget when a case of the jitters sets
in. As a ring steward you can help
your fellow fancier by making sure
they maintain their place in the line,
assuring them that yes, they do want
to stack their dog facing in the same
direction as the previous 10 exhibits
before them, that their armband is
secured and in place and that the
number is an exact match with the
one that was assigned to the dog in
the catalog.
And there is no greater honor than
being asked to judge one of the
events. My husband had the privilege
of judging the Futurity at a recent
National Specialty. It was one of the
most enjoyable experiences we’ve had
at a National. As The Spouse, it can
be a bit unnerving to sit ringside and
watch your better half adjudicate over
your peers. As the day progressed my
immediate response to anything said
to me was “I’m just The Wife”. Because
I was sitting close to the entrance to
the ring, some folks thought I was the
ring steward and I got asked more
than once for an armband. It was a
great experience, and people are still
talking to us, which makes it all good!
Someone told me early on that you
come to The National to have fun.
You are there to show your dogs most
certainly to the judge, but also and as
importantly to your fellow breeders in
the sport. One of the most important
events at a National Specialty is the
Stud Dog and Brood Bitch class.
What a great opportunity to see
how a particular line is producing. It
might confirm a decision about a stud
dog, or give you some new ideas of a
possible breeding direction you might
not have considered.
This year’s batch of National
Specialties is upon us. When you arrive
at the National, whether at the first
social event or while sitting ringside,
look around for that person or couple
that you’ve never seen before. You’ll
recognize them easily. They’ll be the
folks sitting on the sidelines, with wide
eyes and a slight look of bewilderment
on their faces. They’ll look just like you
felt at your first National Specialty. Go
up to them and say Hello. Introduce
them to some of your friends and offer
to answer any questions they might
have. They’ll appreciate it forever!
here is no greater event in the sport of dogs than the parent club National Specialty. It is a great opportunity to catch up with old friends, make some new ones, see the newest batch of kids, perhaps discover the next star - and if you are really lucky – come home with some ribbons that recognize the success of your efforts as a breeder. It can be the place where your wildest dreams are fulfilled or where you come up just short.
