ASSEMBLY OFFICERS FOR 2015-2016 COLUMBIAN YEAR

SK Gregory Haag, Faithful Navigator

THE HOLY SPIRIT STRIKES AGAIN!

The Holy Spirit, with a little help from His friends, was able to send a beautiful chalice half way around the world to Papua New Guinea and it all happened in a matter of a few

days! Here is how this miracle occurred. On July 10th Sir Knight Peter (Pete) Wiatrek

joined our Father in heaven! Peter was a Fourth Degree Knight since 1985 and was a member of assembly 1855. It is a custom of assembly 1855 to give a beautiful chalice to the family of each of their fallen heroes at the time of their passing. As the chalice is pre-sented it is explained to the wife or living fam-ily member that the chalice will be gifted to a new priest who does not have one so that it may be used in the sacrifice of the mass for time immemorial to honor the Sir Knight for-ever! Bernice, Pete’s wife, who had friends at St. Ann Catholic Church including Dorothy Pawelek, decided that she wanted to gift it to Father Merek from

Greetings Sir Knights,

Blessings to you and your families, may you be enjoying the Kingdom of God.

First of all, I would like to congratulate our newly

elected officers and also thank SK Greg Haag, FN for rallying up articles for the Au-gust Beacon.

The Bucket Theory

If you take a bucket of water and fill it almost to the top and you place a stick in it and swirl it around as fast as you can you will lose some water but when you take the stick out and stop swirling, eventually the water will calm down and peacefully settle back down in it’s old place again.

That is an illustration of what happens in an organization when there is a change in lead-ership; the incoming leaders need to realize that there is a natural tendency for everyone to relax and kick back a bit right after the change.

On June 3rd thru the 7th the State deputy-elects attended an orientation session with Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson, at the Su-preme Council headquarters, on their new leadership roles prior to the annual Organ-izational Meeting of Knights of Columbus State Deputies. Among the topics addressed throughout the meeting were membership growth; setting a growth plan; the fraternal-insurance partnership; charitable programs

and their ability to help recruit and retain members; ceremonials; and home corpora-tions.

Now, think about it for a bit; if water flows down hill and we are at the bottom what do you think is coming down the turnpike? What do you think the new enthusiastic state depu-ties are going to be swinging at you when they get back home? Right now is the time to pony up, gitty-up, and get ready for the ride.

Now is the time for our assembly leaders to get over the elections and start thinking about membership growth; setting a growth plan; setting charitable programs and plan for their recruitment, member retention and planning for the 4th degree exemplification coming up on October the 3rd.

We are members of the giant, Knights of Co-lumbus, and the Knights of Columbus is no sleeping giant.

ASSEMBLY 1855 OFFICER INSTAL-LATION Rudy M. Tabbutt, FC

The Knights of Columbus Assembly 1855 had its Officer Installation ceremony this past July 9, 2015, at the Highlands Columbus Hall.

The installation began with the presentation of the national colors by the assembly’s Color Guard. Members of color guard were SK Jesse Aguilar, SK Raymond Arias, SK John Villanueva, and SK Paul Girlish.

The assembly was honored by having Father Arnold Ibarra, of Santo Niño Catholic Church, open the installation ceremony with an opening prayer. Father Ibarra then turned over the rest of ceremony to Master Ken Boone and Mar-shall Domingo Guerrero to formally install the officers of K OF C Assembly 1855.

All officers and their wife’s were seated in the front row of the seating area. Master Boone then asked Marshall Guerrero to escort each officer to the front of the assembly to be sworn into their office. As the installation continued, each officer and his wife walked in front of the Assembly where wife’s donned their husbands with their Officer jewels. After the installation of officers, Master Boone presented the new officers to the audience.

Father Ibarra then closed the installation with a closing prayer. New Faithfull Navigator, Greg-ory Haag, invited all knights and family mem-bers to stay for a delicious Mexican dinner. We need to thank FN Haag and his kitchen staff for the great service that night.

I’d like to take this time to thank past Faithful Navigator, Pedro Ybarra for all the innovative leadership techniques he used during this past year; ROBO calling, new hamburger helper schedule, better organized agenda for officer and general assembly meeting and the Beacon newsletter you are now reading, to name a

few.

Now that the officers are installed the work be-gins. Come join FN Haag and Officers of As-sembly 1855 to have another successful year!

Hi Sir Knights.

As an expression of grati-tude and appreciation:

I would like to express my most sincere thanks and appreciation to all our Sir Knights that took time from their busy schedules to an-

swer the calls for our deceased Brother Knight’s turn-outs during this passed frater-nal year, July 2014 - June 2015. For those that were not there, let me tell you, it's a privilege, honor, duty, and a great feeling to know, that you were there to see your Brother Knight for the last time on this earth and to express your condolences and sup-port to his family.

We hope that starting now with our new Fra-ternal Year we will have more Sir Knights join in on our Assembly on our official turn-outs. I look forward to seeing you there. As for now, please join me. Let's all pray for our deceased Brother Knights and their fami-lies.

We Are Called Your C.C.C. JESSE J. Aguilar

The following article, taken from the Fourth Degree Color Corps Drill Manual General Information is to clarify some misunderstand-ings about the assembly’s color corp. func-tion and assembly turnouts.

COLOR CORPS DESCRIPTION

The Color Corps (C.C.) has two sub-groups, the Color Guard (C.G.) and the Honor Guard

(H.G.). The Color Guard consists of the flag bearers and at least two members of the Honor Guard who escort the colors.

The Honor Guard consists of members of the Color Corps who have mastered the Manual of the Sword.

In many assemblies, all members of the Color Corps belong to the Honor Guard.

This should be kept in mind when following the procedures in the Color Corps Drill Man-ual/General Information manual.

COLOR CORPS REGULATIONS

Every assembly should organize and main-tain a Fourth Degree Color Corps under the supervision and direction of the Master of the District.

Such bodies may participate in Installation of Officers, Fourth Degree Exemplifications, re-ligious and public functions and parades and other functions, with consent of the Master of the District.

The meaning of this sentence is that ALL turnouts or simulated 4th Degree turnouts MUST have the consent of the Master of the District. Simply put, "A group of 4th Degree members can-not decide to have a turnout on their accord. If a group of 4th Degree mem-bers decides they want to have a turn out they MUST be members of the assembly’s color corps and ALL as-sembly turn outs are to be coordi-nated and directed by the assembly’s Color Corps Commander.

Page 5 Page 6

Color Corps should be coordinated and di-rected by a Color Corps Commander (C.C.C.) to be appointed by the Faithful Navigator. It is important to remember that when individual members of the Color Corps appear at public functions they are not only representing themselves, but also their as-sembly and the entire Order of the Knights of Columbus. Their conduct and appearance should reflects this at all times.

The regulations for the Color Corps (C.C.) apply to the following:

1. Color Corps (C.C.): A Fourth Degree Knight, who has been trained and pos-sesses the official regalia, in good repair, is eligible to participate in C.C. functions.

2. The assembly will have a Color Corps Commander (C.C.C.) appointed by the Faithful Navigator (F.N.) for a term not to exceed that of the F.N. The assembly shall own and furnish the C.C.C. with a purple cape and chapeau (that matches the color as set forth in the Laws of the Fourth Degree), which shall be returned to the Assembly at the end of the F.N.’s term of office, or sooner if requested by the F.N. The C.C.C. is responsible for secur-ing his own sword, service baldric and gloves.

3. Expenses incurred by the C.C. are the responsibility of the assembly and are not chargeable to the fund of the District Mas-ter.

4. The M.F.D. must contact the Ordinary

of the Diocese as to his wishes pertaining to the C.C. in liturgical events. The pastor of a church must also be consulted, and his approval obtained, before any function can take place in his parish. Please note: the policies as approved by the Ordinary for the C.C. will ALWAYS take prece-dence.

5. The Marshal (M.) is the Commander in charge at any district or provincial event where he is acting on behalf of the District Master.

6. The Color Corps may not cross district lines except with the approval of the Dis-trict Master’s involved and have received approval of the Vice Supreme Master (V.S.M.). For a multi-assembly function, when all C.C. members are invited to par-ticipate, the District Master, through his Marshal(s), will be in charge.

7. For Supreme Council functions, where C.C. members come from Order wide ju-risdictions, the C.C. will be under the di-rection of the host V.S.M with support from the hosting District Master and his Marshal(s).

8. The assembly C.C. may perform at any internal or external function in its desig-nated service area and shall be under the direction of the assembly’s F.N. through the C.C.C.

In other words; One cannot just suit up

and assemble as a color corps or honor

guard function without the knowledge or

the permission of the FN and the function

must be under the CCC’s direction.

On Friday, July 10, 2015 there was a turnout for Our Lady of Fatima 98th Eu-charistic Celebration at Holy Name Church sponsored by Servants of Jesus and Mary, S.A. Propagating the messages of Fatima.

Present in Full Regalia were SK Pedro Ybarra, SK Javier Marti-nez, SK Joe Moncada a mem-ber of Assembly 1102, SK Rudy Tabbutt was the acting CCC. Also present were members of Holy Name Council 8789 who helped carry the statue during the procession

The Message of Fatima

The public message of Fatima recalls that of Lourdes. Through the children Mary urges prayer for sinners, recitation of the Ro-sary, and works of penance. On October 13 she said: "I have come to exhort the faithful to change their lives, to avoid grieving Our Lord by sin; to pray the Rosary. I de-sire in this place a chapel in my honor. If people mend their ways, the war will soon be over."

But Mary also confided several "secrets" to the children, some of which Lucy subse-

quently transmitted. Presumably there was prediction of another war in the near future and a request for special veneration of the

Immaculate Heart of Mary. The final secret Lucy is thought to have entrusted to Pope John XXIII.

As at Lourdes, the "apparitions" of Fatima have brought crowds of visitors. Pilgrimages, which began in the summer of 1917, have experienced growing suc-cess, not only among the Portu-guese themselves but also among people from other coun-tries, including the United States. The national pilgrimage following ecclesiastical recogni-

tion of the apparitions (May 13, 1931) is said to have drawn more than a million partici-pants.

Popes have shown exceptional favor to-ward Fatima, Pius XII, Paul VI, and John Paul II in particular making a visit to the shrine. The papal in-terest and the basilica built at the site of the apparitions has helped to swell the summer pilgrimages to Fatima. Crowds comparable

to, and sometimes larger than, those at Lourdes are not uncommon. In a rustic set-ting, pilgrims hear the message repeated that Mary spoke to the children: prayer, works of penance, recourse to her Immaculate Heart.

Papua New Guinea! Father Merek was here in La Vernia for the second time in two years to give Father Stan a well deserved vacation! I know Father Merek well, for last time he was here, my wife Tosca, my mother-in-law Ginger and I had Father over for lunch and a swim. Father regaled us with wonderful sto-ries of his experiences in Papua New Guinea! Like the one where his prede-cessor priest had traveled by horse back to a small village and after three days of marrying and bap-tizing, sharing mass and other sacraments with the villagers he went to look for his horse and found out that some villagers had eaten it!!

So, as Rev. Msgr. Frank Kurzaj, Pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Flores-ville, was relating wonder-ful stories and anecdotes of Sir Knight Peter and his family and of how Peter dedicated his life to Mother Church and its members; it was revealed that his wife Bernice and the rest of his family wanted Pete’s chalice to be taken back to Papua New Guinea by Father Merek.

As the honor guard was waiting for the cas-ket to be placed in the hearse Rev. Msgr. Frank asked, “who is going to take care of the engraving of the chalice”? Being the new chief bottle washer, veggie cutter, ham-burger maker and Faithful Navigator of As-sembly 1855 and knowing father Merek as I did, I immediately volunteered. “I will father!”

Happily Msgr. Frank further explained that Father Merek was to leave in two days and he wanted to take the new chalice with him back to Papua New Guinea!!

“YIKES, LORD HELP ME!” went thru my thoughts, especially, after just hearing from more than one Brother Knight, that the en-

graving process was rather time consuming and normally took a week to ten days!! I secured the chalice from my Brother Knight and soon realized that I should exit the fu-neral procession line and start making some calls to engravers! After several guffaws, “are you kidding me’s”, and even several “that is not going to hap-pens”, I realized that I was going about this the wrong way! See I was trying to do it myself; I sat there for a few minutes, said my favorite prayer, Hail Mary,

while thinking let’s get Mother Mary in-volved. Just than my wife called and said “Call this number!!” I called and was told, “Yes sir, bring it right over and we will have it completed by noon tomorrow!!!” I thought, thank you dear Jesus, Mother Mary, Brother Pete, Msgr. Frank, Father Stan, Bernice and finally Father Merek, who, so lovingly, spent his time and efforts here with us at St. Ann Church. As I presented the Chalice Father Merek he said, “Please tell Mrs. Peter Wia-trek, Bernice, that this beautiful chalice will be used every day at my main church and I will thank Peter every day and remember Him and Bernice as I use it!!”
