The Exercise and Movement Science Program at Lane Community College prepares students for a multitude of exciting careers in the health and fitness industry that focus on exercise as medicine.

Opportunities in this field include personal trainers, group exercise instructors, corporate fitness directors, researchers, fitness technicians, fitness specialists, coaches, teachers, athletic trainers, wellness coaches and recreation managers.

Professionals in this field work with clients of all ages, abilities, and at various life stages. Potential work settings include gyms, recreation centers, rehabilitation settings, aquatic settings, outdoor facilities, re-sorts, spas, schools, corporate fitness centers and athletic training facilities.

Graduates of the Exercise and Movement Science Program are skilled and knowledgeable in numerous areas, including: anatomy, kinesiology, exercise physiology, injury prevention, conditioning, functional training, fitness assessment, exercise prescription, and fitness management. Graduates also possess excellent leadership, motivational, and communication skills.

Hands-on learning and practical experience through Cooperative Education internships provide students with opportunities to work in the exercise science industry prior to graduation.

One of the leading factors contributing to the success of program graduates is the variety of on and off campus work-based learning opportunities through Cooperative Education internships.

Exercise and Movement Science students can earn:

• Associate of Applied Science Degree (2-year degree)

• Fitness Specialist Level 1 One-year certificate

• Fitness Specialist Level 2 Two-year certificate

Transfer options to four year universities are also available!

Get Your Career Off To A Healthy Start

In addition to a degree in Exercise and Movement Science, the majority of employers require fitness professionals to have a nationally recognized certification (NSCA, ACSM, ACE) and experience in or further certifications in specialty areas (Yoga, Pilates, Exercise and Pregnancy, etc.).

The Exercise and Movement Science curriculum prepares students to successfully obtain national certification from a variety of organizations .

Employment of exercise science and fitness workers is expected to increase much faster than the average for all occupations through 2014, with expected national growth of nearly 27% annually. Expected growth in Oregon for this occupation is 28.3%.

A career in the Exercise Science field is richly rewarding. You can make a positive impact on peoples’ lives doing something that you enjoy, while earning a good income.
