We are very pleased to invite you to Rome for the 18th Annual Conference of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists. EAERE 2011 will be held on the campus of the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, from June 29th to July 2nd. It will be jointly organized by the Department of Economic - Financial Studies and Quantitative Methods (SEFEMEQ) and the Faculty of Economics.

While the ‘eternal city’ is known worldwide, if only for its unparalleled past, the Tor Ver-gata campus is quite young, very dynamic and competitive. The Faculty of Economics was established only in 1987 but in a few years was able to reach the upper positions in the ranking of the Italian state universities. It has held the top one for two years in a row and currently is ranked in the first three. The SEFEMEQ Department hosts an intense research and teaching activity in environmental economics, with a PhD program in the law and economics of the environment, a Laboratory on environmental economics and research partnerships with domestic and foreign institutions.

The conference programme will cover all areas of environmental and resource economics, ranging from topics prevailing in the general debate, such as climate change, Kyoto protocol, energy sources, ETS, biotechnology, to less publicized and very spe-cialized subjects such as biodiversity loss, waste accumulation, toxic waste disposal, packaging reduction, adaptation to climate change.

We expect around 700 participants from all over the world, engaged in environment re-lated activities in various capacities - researchers, teachers, students, professionals, policymakers, managers. Special emphasis will be given to the interaction between the growing scientific knowledge on environmental issues and the economics and politics of sustainable human development.

Rome ranks among the great world capitals. The city and its surroundings offer invaluable artistic, cultural and entertainment opportunities, and their landscape has a unique historical fascination. The University of “Tor Vergata” is located outside the urban area, but is conveniently linked by underground to the city centre and central railway station (Stazione Termini), which is in turn the city terminal of the Aeroporto Internazionale Leonardo Da Vinci. The other airport, Ciampino, is located along the Via Appia close to the Castelli Romani, and is conveniently connected to the campus.
