E-28 Electric Gun Driver Manual

WARNING: Allow only qualified personnel to perform thefollowing tasks. Observe and follow the safety instructions inthis document and in the manual.

The E-28 Electric Gun Driver is an electrical device that operates the coilof an electric gun or solenoid valve. The driver, which accepts either a10-24 VDC trigger signal or a 115 VAC trigger signal from acustomer-supplied external timer, opens the solenoid, allowing hot meltmaterial to flow.

The E-28 Driver uses solid state switches and power supply, to send acontrolled current to the coil. The coil produces a magnetic field thatpulls the needle off its seat, allowing adhesive to flow.

The driver senses the number of modules per driver group and providesthe appropriate peak and holding current for the application. Bymanaging the energy to the coil, the driver produces clean, accuratepatterns while extending module coil life.

The driver provides more on-line features than any other device of itstype in the market today. For ease of installation, the driver has acomplete front panel display that indicates the status of the timing signal, the input power supply, the output signal to the gun and the integrity ofthe coil circuit. The driver contains fully replaceable fuses and effectivelyisolates high and low voltages within the cabinet. The cabinet itselfserves as a heatsink for the electronics, extending their service life andoffering superior consistency and reliability.

WARNING: Power supply service is 100-240 VAC. Maximumpower load is 350 watts with a 6 Amp fuse.

The E-28 Electric Gun Driver is shipped in Manual Selection Mode, inwhich the Rotary Selector Switch must be used to set the number ofmodules per group. If three modules or fewer per group are installed, theAuto Selection Mode jumper must be used.

Selecting Number of Modules per Group

There are two modes of selecting the number of modules per group:Manual or Automatic. See Figure 6.

Manual Selection Mode: Manual Selection Mode is the default settingfrom the factory. If the manual jumper on the micro-controller board is inplace, then rotary selector switches SW1 (Group 1) and SW2 (Group 2)are used to set the number of modules connected on each group. Use asmall screwdriver to adjust the rotary selector switches. Set them to 1, 2,3, or 4 modules per group. The respective group’s display will indicatethe number selected.

Automatic Selection Mode: Automatic Selection Mode may be usedonly when three or fewer E-200 modules are connected to each of theoutputs. When in the Automatic Selection Mode, the E-28 Electric GunDriver automatically detects the number of E-200 modules connected toeach of the two outputs when the unit is powered up.

To select the Automatic Selection Mode, move the jumper from theMANUAL to the AUTO jumper position on the micro-controller board.See Figure 4 for the MANUAL and AUTO jumper locations.

CAUTION: The Automatic Selection Mode should not be usedwhen one or both of the outputs are connected to four E-200modules. While the driver will often properly detect and indicatefour E-200 modules, some sets of four modules may incorrectlybe detected as being three modules when the E-200 gunmodules are hot. When one or both groups have four E-200modules connected, use Manual Selection Mode.

CAUTION: Automatic Selection Mode should be used only withE-200 gun modules. If other types of modules are used, configure the E-28 for Manual Selection Mode and set SW1 andSW2 to obtain the proper amount of output current needed forthe number and type of modules used.

The keypad includes a POWER light that indicates the unit is energizedand three indicators for each group:

1. A display indicating the number of gun modules connected.

2. A TRIGGER light indicating the trigger signal is connected andenergized.

3. An OUTPUT light indicating whether the corresponding groups areconnected and energized.

Fig. 7 Keypad

The TRIGGER and OUTPUT lights are used to indicate normal operationand to troubleshoot. When a trigger signal is applied, the respectiveTRIGGER light illuminates. When the RUN button on the keypad ispushed, and as long as the green RUN indicator light is on, the driver isin RUN mode. If the corresponding trigger signal is present and a gun isconnected to the output, the OUTPUT light illuminates, indicating thatelectric current is flowing to the gun coil(s). If, for any reason, theconnection between the driver and the gun coil(s) is interrupted, then theOUTPUT light will not illuminate. This is an indication that the connectionis open.

Each group is controlled by the following keys:

STOP

This key disables the output of the corresponding group and resets thegroup output following a fault. A fault condition can be identified by ablinking number on the corresponding display.

RUN

This key enables the output of the corresponding group and allows thecorresponding gun coils to be energized when a trigger signal is present.A light on the RUN key illuminates when this key is pressed. The RUNlight stays on whenever the corresponding group is enabled.

TEST

While in STOP mode (RUN indicator light is off), this key energizes thegun coil(s) as long as the TEST button is pressed. While in RUN mode,TEST has no effect.

NOTE: While the unit is in RUN mode, the TEST key is disabled. Whilethe unit is in TEST mode, if the RUN key is pressed the unit will go toRUN mode.

NOTE: The STOP key has the highest priority of all. When pressedsimultaneously with other keys, the unit will go into (or remain in) STOPmode.

To shut down the E-28 Electric Gun Driver, disconnect the power sourcelines.

CAUTION: Do not use a standard oscilloscope to observe theE-28 Electric Gun Driver output voltages (terminals 1-2 and 4-5of XT2 terminal block). The outputs are at the same potentialas the main line and a ground fault condition may occur. Whilethe E-28 Gun Driver protects itself from the output short circuit, damage to attached instrumentation can occur.

A clamp-on current probe or a differential/isolator amplifier connected tothe oscilloscope is recommended. The E-28 Electric Gun Driver willdeliver an electric current impulse that has virtually the same timeduration as the trigger signal; therefore, while monitoring output currentmay sometimes provide helpful diagnostic information, output voltagemonitoring should not be required.
