Dynamic Learning v2 Tutorial 14: Test and Assess Setting tests and tasks for students
Assessment in trial mode
If you’re trialling a Dynamic Learning title, you may have opted to do so without identifying a User
Manager or setting up individual logins. Tutorial 9 will tell you more about the User Manager process.
If you are using the generic logins we sent you by email, you may now want to consider setting up
students with unique logins so that they can take tests and have their scores recorded. For more
information see Tutorial 10, Manage users.
Using the Test and Assess resources as a Teacher or Teacher Admin
Only certain titles contain Test and
Assess online resources with full
reporting and feedback. Other titles may
contain interactive test material without
full reporting. Yet others may contain full
reporting and feedback on Tasks, but the
tasks themselves are supplied in the form
of documents you can hand out to
students, rather than tests to take online.
These tasks are not electronically
marked, but teachers can record marks
within Dynamic Learning, and profile
students for remediation. For more on
Reports, see Tutorial 16.
Click on the cover icon for the title you
want to manage.
A Dynamic Learning title with Test and Assess resources
Straight from the Course home page, you can:
• See the due dates of tests you have assigned (the
date will be red if it is overdue) in the order in
which you assigned them – most recent first
• Click on the name of the test to load a marksheet
for just those students to whom you assigned it,
so you can see how they are doing
• See more tests, using the ‘show more…’ link
• Change the Assign/Show all setting, so that you
can decide how much your students can see of
the tests available.
If any title in the course or
package that you subscribe to
has Test and Assess material,
you’ll be able to see this panel
on the home page. If there is
no Test and Assess material
associated with the package,
there will be no panel visible.
The Assign/show all setting (see below) lets you
organise tests

Assign / show all
Your course or package
may have more than one
title with tests.
If you prefer to make all
tests available to all
students, rather than
assign them specifically to
individual students or
groups, you can do this on
a title-by-title basis using
this panel.
Any teacher or teacher
admin with access to
Manage DL can do this,
and it applies to any Test
and Assess title.
Remember, this will affect
the title for the whole
institution, not just you
and your own students.
Accessing tests and tasks from the home page
• View all tests takes you to the list of
all tests for this course or package
• Assign tests lets you assign any test
directly to a student or group of
students
• Assign tasks (if there are some in the
package) does the same thing for
tasks
• Marksheets and reports shows you
the reports for students or groups on
the tests or tasks in the package. This
is covered in Tutorial 16.
View all tests
The View all tests button takes
you to this screen, listing all tests
and tasks for your title. You can
use the listing to launch a
particular test, or the test cog to:
• add to a test to a lesson
• assign the test
• view the assignment history
• view the mark grid
If a title is set to ‘Show’, all students will automatically have access
to all tests. Teachers can still assign the tests, however.
If a title is set to ‘Assign’, then students will not see all tests –
they’ll see just those that have been assigned to them.

Assign tests
The Assign tests button launches a
panel that allows you to select one
of the titles in the course, then a
test.
You can then filter the students by
means of the groups they may be
in, or the title to which they have
access, or simply alphabetically by
first name or last name.
Before assigning the test to
students, you can fix the duration
of its availability, and send them a
message along with the test, if you
like.
Assign tasks
Assign tasks is similar, but now the
dropdown only contains tasks.
These appear in the Students’ ‘To
do’ list, just as tests do, but there
is no automatic online marking.
At the foot of the screen for both
Assign test and Assign task,
there’s a ‘View assignment history’
button to show you which
students have been sent the test,
and when.
You’ll get a message whenever you
assign a test or task.
The Preview test button
gives you a chance to look at
the test before you assign it

history’ button

Assign/share a test or task from the Resource list
Just as you can assign a test from
the cog on the Tests overview
screen, you can also do this from
the Resources overview, where
tests and tasks appear alongside
other resources.
Click open the resource cog, then
use Assign test to open the Assign
dialog box as before.
Assign a test from Search results
Using the Search filters, you can
produce a list of all Interactive
tests.
The cog that appears by each
resource can be opened and used,
as before, to assign the test.

Assign/share a test from Manage DL – coming soon
Another way to assign a test is by
using the Assign test button from
within Manage DL.
This method will work in much the
same way as assignation from the
Test list, but in this case, you will
first need to select the title and
individual test that you want to
assign.
Assign/share a test by adding it to a lesson
You can add as many Test and Assess tests
as you choose to a given lesson, and
assign/share it in the same way as you
would any other lesson, to as many
students as you wish.
When you share the lesson with students,
a notification about any tests it contains is
also posted in the students’ message box
and ‘To Do’ list.
For more information about the lesson
Builder, see Tutorials 6 and 7.

Notification in students’ To Do list
When you send specific
assignments to your
students, their Messages
list and To Do list will both
contain a notification of
which test has been set.
They will be able to click
either listing to open and
complete the test.
If you sent them the test(s)
within a lesson, that lesson
will have a notification in
each student’s message
inbox.
If the tests setting for a title is to ‘show all’ assessments, no special notification is
needed. When the student logs in, they will find they have access to all tests.
However, you can now assign a test to a student regardless of the title’s assign or
show setting, and regardless of whether the student ordinarily has access to that
title.
