DSTM-1 is a single-port STM-1 module set, that provides SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) Path Terminating Equipment (PTE) functionality for DXC-100.

The module provides direct access to the STM-1 level (155.520 Mbps) services and can operate opposite any other DXC family member, or standard STM-1 equipment.

When operating as a fractional SDH Terminal Multiplexer (TM) for the DXC-100 unit, DSTM-1 multiplexes traffic from up to 63 E1 or 84 T1 data streams coming from any other port into a single STM-1 data stream. Mixed E1 and T1 multiplexing is also supported (see Table 1). The module routs any E1 or T1 data stream to any of the 63 TU-12 tributary units carried in the STM-1 VC-4 virtual container.

As a TM, DSTM-1 provides direct traffic grooming and multiplexing of E1/FE1, T1/FT1, or n x 56/64 kbps data.

DXC-100 with the DSTM-1 module can be also used as an E1/T1 converter.

Three link numbering schemes are available: AU-3 (VC-3/G.707), AU-4 (VC-3/G.707), and AU-4 (VC-3 sequential).

Mixing the E1 and T1 traffic in the same STM-1 frame can be done at the payload envelope level (STM-0) only when using the VC-3/G.707 link numbering scheme. The VC3-Sequential numbering scheme does not allow mixed T1/E1 modes.

DSTM-1 STM-1 Multiplexer Module

Each payload is configured as E1 or T1, and framed by a 51.84 Mbps mapper. Each mapper conveys either E1 or T1 links. E1 and T1 traffic cannot be mixed within the same payload. The three 51.84 mappers are sequentially interleaved into a 155.52 SDH signal.

E1 links are mapped to VC-12 containers, while T1 links are mapped to VC-11 containers. These Virtual Containers (VCs) are then assembled into Transmission Groups (TUG) and then Administrative Units (AU) or payload envelopes before conversion to an optical signal.

The STM-1 port can be ordered with one of the following interface types:

• Short-haul 1310 nm optical interface, with an operation range of up to 15 km (9 mi)

• Long-haul 1310 nm optical interfaces, with operation range of up to 40 km (24 mi)

1:1 redundancy allows switching to another DSTM-1 module installed in an adjacent slot in case of critical link failure.

Setup, control, and diagnostics can be performed using an ASCII terminal connected to the supervisory port. Alternatively, these can be performed using Telnet or the RADview SNMP element management system connected to the Ethernet 10/100BaseT port.

Diagnostic capabilities include self-diagnostics at power-up, local and remote loopbacks, and performance monitoring of external and payload ports. For voice applications, call processing ABCD signaling bits can be monitored.

The DSTM-1 module can utilize direct X-Link connections to DXCC modules for stacked unit applications. When this feature is implemented, the STM-1 traffic can be directed to the DXCC without utilizing the nest midplane bus to allow higher physical capacity of that nest. When using X-Link support, a special software version must be ordered. Alternatively, DSTM-1 can also use the nest-resident TDM bus for multiplexing purposes, similar to other DXC-100 modules.
