FRONT-END FOR DIGITAL SATELLITE TELEVISION
Fujitsu Microelectronics Europecontinues the success story with one of the most advanced, highlyintegrated single-chip solutions fordigital satellite broadcasting, whichcombines a tuner, a QPSKdemodulator and a Forward ErrorCorrection Unit into one 120-pinpackage.
Many set-top box manufacturersaround the world already use thewell known MB86A15. It offers aseries of benefits over previous-generation discrete QPSK NIMs,
including much smaller size, significantly reduced powerconsumption and lower cost.
The chip integrates a Zero IFTuner, a QPSK Demodulator andForward Error Correction (FEC)circuitry, making it ideal for DVB-Sand DSS transmissions, withoutthe use of tuning-diodes, expensivecapacitance and inductiveelements.
This means that the onlyexternal components needed todesign and build a completeworking front-end for a set-top boxare the F-connector, a 4MHzcrystal, and some resistors andsimple capacitors.
In addition, the MB86A15internally generates the controlsignal for DiSEqC 1.x, the standardfor interfacing between the satellitedish and receiver, which makes it

possible to switch between anarray of dishes. The DiSEqC 1.xstandard requires a protocolinvolving very strict timing, andthis is supported by the new chipdirectly in hardware, optimisingperformance and reducing theamount of software needed.
Much lower powerconsumption is an attractivefeature of the MB86A15, whichoperates from supply voltages ofjust 2.5, 3.3 and 5V. This contrastswith previous generation designs inwhich the tuning diode required a30V supply.
Maximum power dissipation ofthe new device is 1.5W (at45Mbaud), and thanks to this it isavailable in a compact LQFP 120-pin package.
zThe low power consumptionwill help to further reduce costsand make design andimplementation easier.

MPEG-2 DECODER FOR DIGITAL TELEVISION
The third generation MPEG-2decoder called SmartMPEG(MB86H2x) is ideally suited formedium and low-end set-top boxapplications. The SmartMPEGincludes nearly all of the requiredfeatures for these set-top boxapplications, requiring only a singleSDRAM and a FLASH memory foroperation.
The SmartMPEG is the firstFujitsu MPEG device to use a sharedmemory architecture. In this shared
architecture, a single SDRAM isused for MPEG decoding, OSDgraphic generation and the systemprocessor. Performance of theembedded ARC Tangent-A4 CPUrunning with 130MHz is very highand after initialisation it iscompletely available for other taskslike OSD processing or SI dataanalysis. This high performanceincrease is achieved through anincreased clock frequency, additionalinstructions, a 2kB data cache, a 4kBinstruction cache and a fastermemory system.
The specialised SDRAM interfaceis capable of connecting to both 16and 32 bit SDRAM devices, allowingselection of the optimal componentsfor each application. A 32 bit deviceneed only be used when extremelyhigh OSD-graphic performance isrequired.
SmartMPEG evaluation board
SmartMPEGThe on-chip digital PLL (instead ofexternal VXCO), the 7-segmentcontroller and the option to use thevideo DACs for audio output, allowcustomers to reduce the cost forlow-end applications to an absoluteminimum. This high level ofintegration will enable customers toachieve one of the most efficientsolutions for medium- and low-endset-top boxes available on themarket today.
There are derivatives availablefrom the SmartMPEG, which includefeatures for special applications. Forexample an NDS ICAM, whichallows the SmartMPEG to be used ina network, where the NDSscrambling algorithm is used. TheSmartMPEG for extendedtemperature makes it ideally suitedfor automotive applications. Forcertain PayTV Networks a
Macrovision version is alsoavailable.
Fujitsu’s Application Interfacesoftware (FAPI) enables customersan easy start for their owndevelopment. The FAPI includesmany low level driver and middlelevel examples. The block diagramabove shows the FH_LIB (FujitsuHardware Library) offering a directaccess to each register in the device. The FD_LIB (Fujitsu Driver Library)includes the driver set, like I2C, IC-Card and Video Driver. In addition, the middleware and the applicationare running.
The basic FAPI runs with orwithout an operating system.
Some interactive API’s are portedto the SmartMPEG. This allowscustomer to build set-top boxes orIDTV’s incorporation OpenTV,MHEG-5 or NDS Middleware.

INTRODUCTION TO GRAPHIC DISPLAY CONTROLLERSFujitsu’s new family of graphicdisplay controllers will optimisesolutions for embedded graphicapplications such as car navigationand mobile information terminals. The products in this family havenumerous functions which arestate-of-the-art to graphiccontrollers today, but have beenspecially optimised for the area ofembedded systems. This meansthat, in addition to many 2D and 3Drendering functions, there is aflexible layer concept, support forscreen resolution of up to XGA(1024 x 768) and further featureswhich are of particular interest in
In-car navigation is a key target application for the ‘Cremson’ graphic display controller
the area of navigation, such asalpha-blending and anti-aliasing. Allderivatives have a CPU interface toenable direct connection ofembedded CPUs and MCUs. Fujitsuoffers a range of graphic displaycontrollers with different levels ofintegration for various applications.

An important feature of ‘Cremson’ and all subsequent members of the family is that graphical informationcan be displayed on four overlapping, independent layers
C (Console) layer– 8, 16 bit/pixel– Applied to show switches and panel displays
M (Middle) layer– 8, 16 bit/pixel– Supplement for Base, can be divided into two
zones
W (Window) layer– 16 bit/pixel (Y:U:V = 2:1:1)*– Applied to overlay input video image
B (Base) layer– 8, 16 bit/pixel– Fundamental map display layer, can be divided
into two zones* To be supplied by 2nd generation product withembedded DRAM. This layer can be adopted as a3rd graphics layer as well.
MB86290A ‘CREMSON’MB86290A ‘Cremson’ is a 2D/3Dgraphics controller, optimised forapplications in car navigationsystems and mobile informationprocessing terminals. Adoptingvarious sophisticated functions, such as flat or Gouraud shading,bi-linear texture mapping, and Z-buffering, ‘Cremson’ offers a high-speed, superior-performance 3Dgraphics functionality.
Moreover, anti-aliasing,concaved polygon rendering andfast line draw features are alsoincluded, allowing smooth andsophisticated-quality rendering. Asa result, ‘Cremson’ performs high-quality rendering operations, withsimilar quality to leading-edge PCgraphics, but with lower powerconsumption. ‘Cremson’ supportsa 64 bit-wide external memoryinterface. This interface is driven at
the same 100MHz frequency as itsinternal operation, to support the large-memory bus bandwidth that is needed to perform the high-performance graphicsoperations described above. Also,in order to support various kinds ofsystem configurations, ‘Cremson’offers a configurable host interfacefor four types of CPUs (FujitsuFR30, Hitachi SH3/4, and NECV832) without external glue logic.
To address the especiallycomplex Window configurations ofcar navigation systems, ‘Cremson’offers 4 layers of overlay planes. These layers are (from top tobottom): C (console) layer, W(window) layer, M (middle) layerand B (base) layer. All layers can berendered in 16 bit/pixel colour(65,536 colours displayed at a
time) or rendered in 8 bit indirectcolour mode (256 selected out of262,144 colours). The colour palette can be defined separately to the C layer and B and M layers.
A transparent colour option isused to blend the layers directly.

The new GDC’s support for 3D graphics makes possible features such as ‘bird-view’ perspectives
Layer Concept
For screen separation in wide-screen displays, the M and B layerscan be split into two separatesegments (left and right). Thisfeature is useful when two differentreduced map scales are displayedside by side. Of course, all theselayers and segments can bescrolled independently. In addition, two hardware cursors aresupported.
An ‘alpha-flag’ per pixel issupported for the C-layer. Thisfeature is useful for blending the C layer colour with all the layercontents below, providing avariable transparent colour effect(‘alpha-blending’).
‘Cremson’ consists of 4 blockmodules: host interface block, external memory interface block, display control block, and 2D/3Drendering block. An internal 64 bitbus called Pixel bus connects thesemodules. Also, the host interfaceblock is connected to each of theother 3 blocks independently toavoid display and/or renderingoperations when the host CPUattempts to access these modules.

MB87P2020A ‘JASMINE’MB87P2020A ‘Jasmine’ is anenhanced version of MB87J2120‘Lavender’ which adds 8Mbitembedded SDRAM, and somemore improved features. Thedevice is fully compatible to the‘Lavender’ chip and uses the sameinternal architecture, the samelayer and interface concept. Noexternal memory devices arerequired for graphic memorybecause of the 8Mbit embeddedSDRAM. As a consequence, thepackage could be reduced toQFP208. Therefore, ‘Jasmine’ isoptimised for compact automotiveor consumer applications where ahigh integration of functions isrequired. Like ‘Lavender’, the‘Jasmine’ is optimised to work as acompanion chip for the Fujitsu 32bit RISC devices MB91F36x.
As a successive product to‘Lavender’, the new device has anumber of enhancements that allowthere to be more flexibility in theapplication area. First of all, a newvideo input interface was developedwhich allows acceptance of moreformats (including YUV) and whichis compatible to a wider range ofvideo decoder chips. A newprogrammable converter matrix(YUV to RGB) allows writing ofthese YUV formats to layers and toconvert back to RGB for scanning.
In addition, a gamma correctiontable was added to allowadjustment of the picturecharacteristics according to theconnected display requirementsand the colour look-up table thatcan now hold up to 512 entries.

MB86293 ‘Coral Q’ has a 6-layer structure and a geometry processor that perform co-ordinate conversionsat 166MHz
The new ‘Coral’ device family offersan increased internal operatingfrequency of 166MHz, a 64 bitmemory bus, support for sixindependant layers, advancedalpha-blending features andenhanced video input facilities. Thehigher internal frequency of166MHz (400MHz for display dotclocks) enables the renderingengine of the devices to achieve afactor 10 improvement in texturemapping and drawing image qualitycompared to the previous graphiccontroller devices.
The enhanced bandwidth allowsa much greater rate of access forgraphics elements, and deliversimproved scanning functions athigher display resolutions. The‘Coral Q’ and ‘Coral B’ devices arecompatible with host CPU busesincluding Fujitsu FR, Hitachi SH3
and SH4 and NEC V83 withoutexternal glue logic. All devices arebinary compatible with previousgeneration graphic displaycontrollers, like the ‘Cremson’,‘Orchid’ and ‘Scarlet’ devices. Thishelps to speed-up developmentsand save costs because existingsoftware modules (e.g. maprenderer) and drivers can be usedwithout any modifications.
An enhancement to 2D-drawingfunctions is the integration of a linedepth display facility, which clearlydefines the correct respective levelof intersecting map lines. Enhancedhardware design also providesimprovements in pattern lineperformance.
All ‘Coral’ devices address up to64MB of external SDRAM orFCRAMTM memory @ 133MHz andare capable of adjusting picture
sizes to optimise the availablememory space. All layers can havea colour depth of 8, 16 or 24bits/pixel and can be changed inposition, size and priority. Themaximum logical layer size hasbeen increased to 4096 x 4096pixels.

MB86294 ‘CORAL B’‘Coral B’ adds video input to thefeatures of ‘Coral Q’ and isavailable in a BGA package. Thevideo input is capable of acceptingTV tuner, DVD player or camerasignals in PAL or NTSC videoformats (ITU656 format). Videopictures of diverse resolution andframe frequency rate, in eitherprogressive or interlaced modes, can be grabbed, scaled anddisplayed picture-in-picture.
The latest automotive andconsumer appliance screens areincreasing resolution to achievebetter readability. They demandimproved picture quality to match, for example DVD quality. In orderto meet these demands, ‘Coral’integrates a new video input up-scaling facility, which allows a full-screen mode of multimedia
pictures at large resolutions to bedisplayed. Both up-scaling anddown-scaling can be setindependently in horizontal andvertical directions in pixel or lineresolutions.
Using the Alpha-map featuresof the ‘Coral’ architecture, a videopicture can be blended smoothlytogether with rendered graphics. The alpha map can be freelyassigned to any of the six layersand allows the assignment of 8 bitsper pixel, enabling each pixel to bemixed to control transparency to avery high degree of accuracy. Inaddition, all layers can be blendedat a fixed ratio of 256 levels. To enhance bit BLT (Bit BlockTransfers) operations, this featurecan now be combined withalpha-mapping. With this function,

MB86295 ‘CORAL P’ & MB86296 ‘CORAL PA’‘Coral P’ is an enhanced version of ‘Coral B’ with a PCI host interfaceand a new video input controller. AnyCPU with a 32-bit PCI V2.1-compliant host interface can bedirectly connected to ‘Coral P’. Thedevice includes both master andslave functions and an internal DMAcontroller for multi-burst transfers oflarge quantities of data between allcombinations of PCI data space and‘Coral’ internal areas.
Additional functions provided bythe host interface are generalpurpose I/O pins and a serialinterface. The external video input of‘Coral P’ accepts data conforming tothe standards RBT-ITU656, RBT-ITU601, RGB666 and RGB888. Thisallows video signals of varioussources to be displayed together
with generated graphics. The videoinput is capable of accepting TV tuner,DVD player or camera signals in PALor NTSC video formats. In addition, rendered graphics from any otherdisplay controller can be used as videoinput source.
The video stream is read, modifiedand written to a video buffer memorycompletely independent of the displayscanning process. Video pictures ofdiverse resolution and framefrequency rate, in either progressive orinterlaced modes, are able to begrabbed, scaled and displayed picture-in-picture. As ‘Coral B’, ‘Coral P’integrates a new video input up-scaling facility, which now allows afull-screen mode of multimediapictures at large resolutions to bedisplayed. Both up-scaling and down-
scaling can be set independently inhorizontal and vertical directions inpixel or line resolutions.
A set of general I/O pins and aserial interface are also included forsimple external resource control.
