School Building Com- mittee Chairman Elizabeth Lewis said Monday that the costs of the schematic design phase should total approxi- mately $1.55 million, not the $2.9 million voters approved in March. Agreeing to use a model school plan is the rea- son for the difference. “We were carrying a larger amount in case no model was acceptable,” Lewis said. Voters at this year’s an- nual Town Meeting approved a debt exclusion to fund the design fees for the co-locat- ed school project, which is projected to cost up to $130 million (after reimbursement from the state’s School Build- ing Authoriy, the town’s con- tribution is estimat ed to be $74 million or lower). At Town Meeting in March, the town voted to spend $3.15 million in Com- munity Preservation Act funds to purchase the former Blairhaven retreat on Standish Shore. Proponents said the purchase was a once in a life- time opportunity for the town to own waterfront property, but some of the land’s neigh- bors were concerned that the use hadn’t been clearly de- ned.
