STUDENT WORKSHEET - DUTIES OF EMPLOYERS AND STUDENTS
KEY MESSAGES The employer must provide a safe and healthy workplace, safe machinery and equipment, and
safe systems of work including induction and supervision
The student on work experience must take care and look after their health and safety and not put others at risk
The employer must provide the right Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) training and induction for all employees in the workplace
The employer must provide students on work experience with any equipment or clothing that is required or appropriate
The employer needs to meet all OHS laws as if the student were an employee
DUTIES OF EMPLOYERSAn employer's main responsibility is to make sure that the workplace is safe, and that anyone working in or visiting the workplace is not exposed to hazards or harmed by the work.
For example, the employer must ensure that:
Work areas, machinery and equipment are kept in a safe condition
Effective ways of working safely are discussed
Students must not be placed in industries or businesses where there is an unacceptable risk to their health, moral or material welfare, safety or wellbeing
The student is inducted into the workplace on their first day of placement
The student understands the tasks they will undertake during the placement
Information, instruction, training and supervision is provided to students so they can work safely
The student is aware of potential hazards
If required, reasonable adjustments to the workplace are made so that a student with a disability can do their job effectively
Where required, the student is provided with protective clothing and equipment and instructed in its use
Regular checks are made to make sure health and safety instructions are being followed
Discussions are had with students to identify and control hazards in workplaces
The student understands acceptable and unacceptable behaviour
If the student becomes ill or is injured, the correct procedure is followed
School staff can readily contact the student to check in how their placement is progressing

The student can readily contact their school if required during the placement
The student has a supervisor and is supervised at all times
DUTY OF STUDENTSOnce you have been properly trained and instructed, you must take care to look after your own health and safety and not put other workers at risk.
While in the workplace, you have a duty to:
Attend workplace induction
Dress appropriately for the workplace
Behave and communicate appropriately at the workplace
Follow health and safety instructions provided by the employer
Ask questions if you are not sure what you are supposed to be doing
Correctly use personal protective equipment and clothing
Use equipment safely and only for its intended purpose
Report hazards and potential problems without delay
Report all work-related injuries and incidents that you think could result in harm to health
Co-operate with the employer on health and safety matters
Employers and students should talk to each other to solve health and safety problems at work.
Avoid distracting yourself by using your mobile phone, checking messages or social media websites.
Take ownership of your learning and think about ‘What would I like to learn during my work experience placement?’
