PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: Dear Members:

Welcome to the March 2018 AGM (Highlights from the last year): As always our year begins with our annual spring market and it was a wet one, but it did not dampen the spirit just the bottom line. The market committee is working hard to do some much needed revamping, more vendors outside a big tent live entertainment and a beer garden just to name a few changes. Heritage Days under a new management team of the Terheide family was a great success, a younger crowed danced to the tunes of DJ Hazy from Holland, and the team is working hard to come up with something new again for 2018. 2017 was a good year revenue wise our income from the rentals was $63,402.00 vs $71,419 in 2016. 2018 is promising to be a record year; the big projection screen in the hall is paying off, The Alberta government really likes it and so far has booked 7 days for their seminars. $7,300.00 windfall for a weekday rental is nice revenue. We finally managed to get a completely renewed web site, and if I say so I’m pleased with the results. I applied for a City of Edmonton Operating Grand and received notice that we were recommended for a $16,500.00 grand payable at the end of this month. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (cont’d)

As you know we have a special bond with Southern Alberta Light Horse Brigade ever since we were part of the Welberg Bell and had the pleasure in September to welcome my dear friends Angelo and Hanneke Somers at the DCC. They are the driving force of the Welberg Bell in Holland where Riek and I had the pleasure to meet them in 2016 to partake in the Remembrance Day ceremony. Angelo gave us a presentation of history of the battle around his home town of Welberg were the SALH was engaged in a fears combat to liberate the Schelde district I Received an update from the Past Commander of the SALH that the City had finalized the permits for Light Horse Park, for the relocation of the Cenotaph, Interpret and share the history of the SALH and enhance the park for everyday use, a brick path with all the sponsors names on it, and tulips and poppies from Welberg Holland, an opportunity for our club to help them plant. Moving Forward - as we embark on a new calendar year for the DCC we had a few big shoes to fill, you all must by now have heard from Aris that the cancer by Jenny have re-manifest itself in her bones, kidney and liver, this was discovered after she fell and broke her femur close to the hip. It is without say that this is not good news. Jenny have wrote a letter to the board that she effective immediately remove herself as the editor of the Dutch Touch, organization of the annual Bloomsday and the Senior Bus trip so she can concentrate on her own health. She is now in the Norwood revalidation clinic to get back on her feet. I wrote her back to take care of herself first and that we would work on the replacements as soon as possible. It was within days that I received the good news that Femke Williams has offered to become the new editor of the Dutch Touch, and Rinske Terheide offered to look after Bloomsday, and if there is still interest for a bus trip she was willing to look after that as well. It is remarkable how we all are so passionate about our club that we still can find people who are willing to step-up on the plate to carry on. The future of the DCC is ones again in good hands. For a very long time we have been racking our brains on how to rejuvenate our aging club, and I’m pleased to say that we may well be on the path of doing just that, as you have been following the news in the Dutch Touch a new group have formed from within, The NextGen that consists of children, and grandchildren of our membership as well new comers that could not find a connection with our aging generation. Their first major undertaking after they formed a board was getting ready for the Silverskate festival. And they hit the ground running. A steep learning curve but they pulled it off. The board had promised the net proceeds of the food sales so they had some start-up money. A few months ago I was contacted by Harold Bens that he, Dolf Hantlemann and Rikke Doodjes wanted to put a fundraiser together for the Cross Cancer in memory of his sister. So a few weeks ago we were entertained by Harold & Charley in the main hall for a music sing along that was enjoyed by 160 people that followed on the big screen some nice videos of the songs performed The proceeds of $2,300.00 from the ticket sales where topped up by the board to $3,000 from our casino funds and was donated to the Cross cancer. There may be another sing along coming in the fall. We keep you posted.

Dear readers: With a heavy heart I have to let you know that I have to give up being the Dutch Touch editor after a good 20 years. After my fall and surgery, I’m slowly learning to walk again and the next challenge will be the new cancer they have found in my body. So I don’t know what the future has in store for me yet and it is now time to pass on the torch. Femke Williams has stepped up to take over our monthly magazine and I am sure she will do a great job as well. I would like to thank all our contributors for sending me their news and articles every month and our advertisers for sponsoring us with their ads. Also, thank-you to Piet Putters for looking after the distribution every month. I have very much enjoyed this particular volunteer job in the DCC. Good luck Femke and thank you! I would like to thank all of you for your cards, flowers, visits and phone calls. It is very much appreciated. I hope to see you again soon at the club.

A film by Jean Van De Velde

SUMMARY We were asked by the coordinator of the Edmonton Jewish Film Festival to let our membership know of one of the films that they are showing this year, which is a Netherlands/South African co-production called An Act of Defiance, directed by Dutch director Jean van de Velde. The film is in English and Afrikaans, and is a riveting historical drama of the 1963 trial of ten South African political activists, including Nelson Mandela and his inner circle of Black and Jewish supporters. ★★★★ ‘An EXQUISITE, MOVING film about a forgotten piece of history.’ Peter Paul Muller is UNPARALLELED.’ - TV KRANT ★★★★ ‘BEAUTIFUL and MODEST.’ - DE VOLKSKRANT ★★★★ ‘A SUBLIME INTERPRETATION’. - ALGEMEEN DAGBLAD ★★ ★★★★★★ ‘The BEST FILM by Jean van de Velde thus far. To our friends, thank you all! My sincere appreciation, to you all for making the Musical Afternoon on Sunday, March 18th, a success. Even the snow, which fell the night before, could not dampen the spring spirit of everyone and I’m sure all enjoyed the music and the sing a-longs. Most importantly, we raised a total of $3000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation to make life better for Albertans facing cancer, wherever they live. Sorry, I did not have the time to thank you all after the event but without you it would not have been possible make the event a success, so thank you to: Charlie for so graciously accepting to play and to promote the event Frank the excellent idea of providing karaoke videos Jenny for promoting the event in the Dutch Touch Dolf for being the M.C. and promote the event The Board of the Dutch Canadian Club for donating the hall Rikke for finding and handling the door prizes for the event Riek and Ann for setting up the hall before the event Judy for handling the tickets at the door George for assisting with the busses at the parking area Daniel for helping in the coat room Edith and her crew for helping in the kitchen Dick for providing services in the bar And, last, but not least, the DCC Board donated $675 to even the fundraiser to $3000! To promote this fundraiser in memory of my sister was a difficult one, but together we must continue to invest in the life-saving cancer research and treatment.

KING’S DAY – APRIL 27, 2018

King's Day is the biggest day of the year in The Netherlands! While there are other monarchies throughout Europe, few put on such wonderfully celebrated festivities as the Dutch with one expressed purpose: to rejoice with the reigning monarch, and emphasize how important he or she is to the Netherlands. Historical Background - The Netherlands is no stranger to historical prominence on the world scene. Dutch merchants, agriculturalists, mariners, philosophers and genius artists such as Rembrandt and the school of the Dutch Masters among many, have been known through the centuries for their unique contributions in various spheres of influence and culture. Today, the country celebrates its place among the nations as they joyously celebrate their ruling monarch on King’s Day. When Queen Beatrix abdicated in favour of her son, Willem-Alexander in 2013, “Queen’s Day” became “King’s Day” which is celebrated on the King’s birthday on April 27th of each year. Cultural Events and Festivities: A Celebration of Life and the House of Orange - King’s Day, or “Koningsdag,” is an ongoing festival throughout the entire nation, major cities or small towns. No place is left out as the Royal Family, being members of the House of Orange, visits as many of their beloved subjects as they can. However, this day is also about a people’s love for their ruling monarch. Whether it is in their capital city of Amsterdam or throughout the realm in Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten, the constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands put on the “Orange,” and take it to the hilt. Whether it’s wearing the colour of orange, drinking the national drink known as “Oranjebitter” or even dying their hair an orange colour, there is no mistaking that the House of Orange is remembered fondly by the people. Stemming from a military victory in 1620 by then Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange, people today join in festivities across the nation. Amsterdam - Street Parties - As the world’s most festive street party, and the number one destination point of the Netherlands during King’s Day, more than a million people visit with 750,000 locals each year. This day is not to be underestimated in importance as DJ and artist-driven events have had to move to the outskirts of the city. Amsterdam - The Vondelpark - Whatever a visitor sees on King’s Day, a visit to the Vondelpark must be among the highest set priorities as one can hear the laughter of children beginning in the early morning hours, as they gather in large numbers to publicly sell old toys, games and perform musical numbers for visitors. Other Attractions and Events in Haarlem, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht - Other large cities, and smaller ones too, have their share in celebrating King’s Day. If you can’t be in Amsterdam, you’ll not come up short if you find yourself in these other major places of destination such as Haarlem, Rotterdam and other famous cities. To make your King’s Day complete, every city and townships have their own spectacular fairs with plenty of wild fun rides, mini pancakes, or “poffertjes” and “suikerspinnen” known as sugar spiders or candy floss.

The Dutch Canadian Business Club organized its second meeting this year on March 20 and had the honour of hosting the Edmonton Police Chief Rod Knecht to talk about the Legalization and Regulation of Cannabis and have him explain how the Edmonton Police Service is preparing for this big and challenging change. We started the evening off with an intro of the attendees while enjoying a great meal and snacks provided by Elegant Affairs with John Drywall. Rod Knecht was introduced by Frank Stolk and he had a very engaged discussion with the audience. The Chief is a very good speaker and knows the facts about Cannabis. As we all know Cannabis legislation is also a very “hot” topic with pro and con camps and everybody has an opinion. Cannabis has been illegal since 1923 in Canada and will be legal in July this year. There has been a lot of discussion about the health effects, especially for younger people, the medicinal use and the recreational use as drug. Also the load on the criminal justice system was discussed as we all know that has been broken for a while. There was a lot of discussion about driving under the influence and what tools the police has to test for Cannabis use. One of the biggest concerns with legislation is that there are no reliable tests available yet to determine whether people are under the influence of Cannabis and what impact that has on driving. There are companies that are revising their policies based on the legalization, Oil Companies, West jet, police force, military etc. were given as examples as they all have safety sensitive positions where requirements are more stringent. There are also different views on whether organized crime will decrease after legislation. The legislation in Canada was also compared with other locations where Cannabis use was legalized and some of the results from comparisons were shared with the audience. The chief also talked about the pros and cons of the safe injection sites as they were used in Vancouver and now in use in Edmonton and he also touched on the current problems the police encounters with Fentanyl overdosing and Fentanyl drug trafficking. The presentation and discussion was very well received by the audience and as always everybody enjoyed the networking after the meeting. In the last month we also met with Dennis Pietersma from the new NFIA (Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency) office in Toronto to introduce the Dutch Canadian Business Club. His office is combined with the Dutch Consulate General in Toronto. (Fact: There are two Dutch Consulates General in Canada, one in Toronto and one in Vancouver, there is one Embassy in Ottawa and there are 6 consulates, one of them in Edmonton). It was his first visit to Edmonton where he also met with a number of other business people in Edmonton to discuss how they can help Canadian businesses doing business in the Netherlands. Currently there is only one NFIA office in Canada. If you need more info please let me know. We also continue to connect business people and advise them on doing business with the Netherlands. We had a quite a few requests and we have been able to connect with help from our members. NEWS FROM THE NETHERLANDS

Deadliest week since WW II More people died in the last week of February than in any equivalent period since the end of the Second World War, Dutch government statistics have shown. A combination of freezing temperatures and the peak of a long-running flu outbreak pushed the number of deaths up to 3,887, according to figures from national statistics office CBS quoted by AD. Half of those who perished were over the age of 80. By comparison, an estimated 3,200 people died in the week of the devastating floods of 1953 – though the total Dutch population at the time was 10.4 million compared to 17.2 million today. On average 2,800 people died per week in 2016. In January 1945, at the peak of the hunger winter at the end of the war, around 4,500 people a week died. Exact figures are unavailable because in those days numbers of deaths were recorded monthly rather than weekly. Jan Latten, of the CBS, said the record was likely to be surpassed again before long as the population ages. ‘The average life expectancy for a newborn baby is more than 80 for boys and around 85 for girls. But the downside of getting older is that our bodies weaken and we are more vulnerable to things that are associated with natural phenomena such as an extremely cold week in winter.’ (DutchNews.nl)
