Reagan giving Biscuit a “checkup”

During September and the beginning of

October, we got to explore our new

classrooms, meet some new friends, and

learn how things work! Now it’s time to

begin our new investigative study.

Preschool Investigative Study: Dogs Dogs are a favorite subject of children of

all ages! And, our children know a lot about

dogs. Dogs have a lot of hair, dogs know

how to swim, and dogs have really wet

noses and very small eyes. Sometimes dogs

get treats for being good. Some dogs c

tricks and know how to sit.

As we learn about dogs, we’re going to

find out how dogs communicate, what they

like to eat and how they eat it. We’ll meet

people who work with dogs and learn about

the different jobs that dogs can have. We’ll

investigate the different kinds of dog homes,

the different breeds of dogs, and learn about

dogs in need and how we can help.

We’ll find the answers to questions like,

“Why do dogs scratch? Why do dogs do

We’ll find the answers to questions like,

get a shot? What is a dog park for? How do

dogs take a bath?”

As we investigate and study dogs, we

also are going to be learning many important

concepts and skills in literacy, math,

science, social studies, and the arts. We will

also use thinking skills to ask questions,

solve problems, make predictions, and test

our ideas. We have chosen the following

books for our investigative study: The

leaves by colors and sizes

Infants and Toddlers The cool weather of fall brings many

changes. Toddlers have lots of fun

exploring and touching leaves, pumpkins,

gourds, and apples. For toddlers, the

activities with leaves provide chances to

sort, compare, and add new words to their

vocabularies.

Apples are included in the diet of many

infants and toddlers. Our children will have

opportunities to see, taste, touch and smell

apples in many forms, and toddlers will be

exposed to the many different colors, sizes,

and shapes of apples.

Pumpkins and gourds are everywhere in

the fall. Our children will learn about the

colors and shapes of pumpkins and gourds,

and how they feel. These activities with

pumpkins and gourds will help toddlers

develop additional language skills.

Be on the lookout for nature collages,

leaf boats, pumpkin and apple

investigations, fall pictures, and discovering

seeds…just to mention a few of our planned

fall activities!

Book of the Month

This month our preschoolers will read,

Apples and Pumpkins by Anne Rockwell.

"When red and yellow leaves are on the

trees," a little girl goes with her parents to a

farm where they pick apples and choose "the

best pumpkin of them all." Back home, she

helps to carve a grinning jack-o'-lantern face

on the big orange pumpkin, which guards

their doorstep on Halloween night while her

mother hands out shiny red apples and she

and her father go trick-or-treating with the

neighborhood ghosts and goblins. Check it

out!

MUSIC

How does a maraca sound happy

or a tambourine sound sad? Our

children will explore new ways to use

rhythm instruments as they make

sounds to express feelings. We’ll also learn

some new autumn songs and finger plays

and the accompanying sign language.
