brothersFROM DIFFERENTmothersIt really is hard to believe that it’s sale time again. Where has the time gone? The past year has seemed to fly by. Looking back at everything we have done and reflecting on all the great friends we have visited with and made along the way we can only wonder what the next year will bring.
First off, a thank you to all of the bidders and buyers of our 2013 BFDM sale. Your support and belief in our program is greatly appreciated. Kate and I have spent the last year travelling and working to grow and improve our program to ensure we can continue to offer quality genetics.
With the great work of our friends at Bow Valley Genetics we have continued to grow our embryo inventory to allow us to offer a greater selection of embryos for sale to both our Canadian and American customers.
After the success of the female portion of our sale in 2013, many will look at this catalogue and ask, where are the heifers? After calving this year we really were left asking the same thing; the number of heifer calves born in 2014 was extremely low at our place. We sorted through what was born and have brought a couple of heifers to the offering that we feel really stand out; for both their look, as well as their breeding. There was not a lot to choose from but the quality was deep.
As our bull battery grows and we branch out into using different AI sires the quality and diversity of the steers on offer grows. Last year we chose to move from picturing our steers to videoing them. We felt this gave people a much better idea of the cattle on offer. The feedback we received was that our customers agreed. We are extremely excited about this year’s offering. Depending on your final sale date watch the steers birth dates and weaning weights in the catalogue to find the calf that will best suit your needs. Last year we saw steers move across Alberta and into BC.
As always, we are more than willing to work with you to make sure your purchase gets to where it needs to be.
Kate and I are looking forward to seeing everyone September 27.

Consistent genetics being passed on from one generation to the next. His Dam is a full sister to the legendary bull Hall’s Legacy Plus. His calves are big and soggy, structurally sound, balanced, full of eye appeal and performance. Use him with confidence. A strong powerful female. Long spined and massively expressive. We love the extension up through her front end. Off of just a first calver with a low birth weight, that didn’t hold her back in any way. Junior member certified. As we have been working with this young lady, we can’t believe the personality she has. Incredibly docile and super fun to work with.

The design and pattern really speaks to the influence Hall’s Crossing 454W brings to these females. Again, a heifer off a first calver. The shape, design and perfor-mance is truly tremendous. Laser fronted and structurally sound.

Over the last few years we have been watching the quality and consistency coming out of the Yardley Cattle Co program. Last year we had the opportunity to travel down to Southwest Utah and go through the cattle at Yardley’s 2013 Focus on the Female Sale. Miss Yardley T42 was our pick of the sale. A massive cow who is as structurally sound as you could ever ask for. After arriving in Canada she calved what we hope to be a new herd sire for us here at DRSS. He is known as “The Immigrant” and you can watch for future details on him. Flushed to our herd sire Hall’s Crossing, we are offering a package of embryos to share in the potential of this great cow.

We had some Monopoly semen in the tank from a few years ago. As more people started asking to buy it, we knew there was a demand. Monopoly calves get harder to find each year and the price of his semen, if you can find it, keeps going up. Wanting to maximize the semen, we decided to use it for a flush. But which cow? There was only one cow we believed was worth the time and investment. This female just works no matter how we breed her. A few years ago she produced a Sunseeker steer that went on to be Supreme Champion in Lacombe. Two years ago, she produced a Hall’s Crossing steer that went on to be Open Champion in Lacombe as well. Each year she just seemed to come back with the high sellers of our sale. Last year she produced the high selling heifer of our sale, DRSS Legendary Princess 52A.

Consistent. That’s about all we can say and all we need to say about Remitall Queen 629S. Consistently producing athletic, high perform-ing herd bulls. We currently walk a son of 629S known as Lonely Island 22Y. Lonely Island 30Z had the highest WPDA of all PB/FB/% Maine Anjou cattle at the 2012 Canadian Western Agribition. Need-ing to add performance and structural soundness? Flushed to our great herd bull Daines Sir Dr Seuss 30T. Dr Seuss females still remain to be our favourite females.

This massive power house of a cow was purchased from Remitall’s dispersal sale. Brought in for her power and depth of body, we really felt her and her daughters would make a truly great cross on our Maine Anjou bulls. And they did, producing our high-selling steer three years ago, who went on to be the Supreme Champion Steer in Lacombe. This cow started the Nancy family that just keeps getting deeper and deeper for us. An opportunity to purchase a daughter of hers from LLB came up two years ago, and it was a no brainer. We jumped in head first using the Wall Street genetics around here. Not only doing a little AI, we also purchased a son from Gerrard Cattle Co to run on some heifers. The bull did such great things for us he worked his way into breeding all types of cattle here at the farm.

This was the first year the Maine Anjou/MaineTainer cattle had their own show at the Summer Synergy Youth Livestock Show. This event is dedicated solely to the growth and development of our young cattle producers.
We were fortunate to be involved in getting the MaineTainer and Maine Anjou show going with sponsorship from us and other breeders. Kate and I attended the banquet dinner to see the awards and scholarships the kids were awarded for their hard work. We were looking for a way to help ensure that the Maine Anjou and MaineTainer cattle would be able to show at Summer Synergy for years to come.
100% of the proceeds from this lot will go toward the 2015 Maine Anjou and MaineTainer Summer Synergy show to help support our youth. Why the table? A friend of ours, Ty Wilson, started a business building custom log furniture. He has made a few items for us and everyone who has stopped by loves them. Ty comes from a family that is dedicated to pro-ducing quality cattle and working with our youth; we felt the fit was perfect. Great designs, hand made, custom built. Make sure to check Ty out on Facebook at Deadwood Furniture.
100% of the proceeds go to the Maine Anjou and MaineTainer Show at the 2015 Summer Synergy Youth Livestock Show.
