President’s Column -Judy Fernandez

Hello Neighbors! June’s meeting was very disappointing, only 13 people including 4 board members attended. Our new Chief of Police Frank Grgurina was our guest and I apologized to him for the low turnout.

Here are some highlights: the Chief comes to us from the City of Fremont. He has been in Law Enforcement for over 23 years and most recently the Police Captain. He explained how our Public Safety department works. Our officer’s are trained 6 months in Police and 6 months in Fire protection and also EMT. This is why sometimes you see so many police cars at an incident. Every patrol car is equipped with Fire protection equipment in case they need more fire fighters on the scene.

With summer weather here, a lot of you have open windows. Our City has seen a increase in home burglaries. Chief Grgurina suggest that you walk around you home and see if you can get in. If you can, then so can strangers! Regarding the fruit vendors going from house to house, they do need a permit. Chief Grgurina stated, we do not know where the fruit is coming from and it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Get to know your neighbors and watch out for each other. If you see anything strange, please call 911 and let Public Safety determine what is happening.

Day Worker Center of Mountain View At this month’s LVNA meeting, we will be hearing from the Day Worker Center of Mountain View. I received this letter from one of our neighbors regarding the ad they ran in last month’s newsletter-Editor.

The May issue of the LVNA had an ad for the Day Worker Center of Mountain View. I wanted to let others know that the center serves homeowners in Sunnyvale, as well as Mountain View and Palo Alto. There is also a worker center in San Jose that is similar, but not affiliated. I recommend using these ―Vetted‖ workers over some guy at a Home Depot parking lot.

I have used several different workers on several occasions to do repairs to a fence and install pavers from the driveway to the back door. (continued on page 2)

To find out about crimes in Sunnyvale, go to the website: www.crimereports.com. Another website to check out is city of Sunnyvale’s, ―Beyond the Badge‖, it tells of different community events that Public Safety is involved in. You can find it at Sunnyvale.ca.gov click ―Departments‖, then ―Public Safety.‖

Speaking of that, ―National Night Out” is Aug. 7th and we will again have an Ice Cream Social at Lakewood Park from 7 – 8. More details to follow in the next newsletter.

Day Worker Center of Mountain View (Cont. from page 1)

I was happy enough with the workers I used, I then had one guy do some work with me at my mom’s place. I have also had them help clearing clutter from my garage and house, and I have several other small jobs planned for the near future.

The workers that come to the center are mostly those who got caught up in the economic down turn, as well as recent Immigrants. So some speak little English, but they are learning in classes taught at the center. I plan to do some volunteer work at the center in the coming days. .

They have both Male and Female workers, but differing tasks are assigned to the person at the top of the two lists.

One thing to consider is to serve a lunch meal to a worker you plan to have do a day’s work. Most workers do not get work every day. Once the person finishes a job, they are put back at the bottom of the list. The lists run 40 or more people and it can take a while, before the worker gets back to the top of the list. The bad economy has only made things worse and the list longer. Bob Chainey, Lakewood Village home owner. In addition to a big Centennial parade and the annual State of the City address and community awards presentation, there will be a wide variety of special, family friendly activities to

honor Sunnyvale’s first 100 years.

This summer the California Theatre Center will perform 4 plays at the Sunnyvale Community Center theater. The theater is located at 550 Remington Drive.

THE CANTERVILLE GHOST A mansion in England, an American family and a ghost who simply won’t let go! Hiram Otis and his family have recently moved to Canterville Chase, a grand estate just outside of London, even though the home was haunted. However a reappearing blood stain and the nocturnal visits of a rather noisy ghost with a taste for the theatrical convince them. Resulting in an entertainingly funny romp for the whole family. July 14—Saturday Matinee at 3:00pm (this is a one hour play suitable for children)

THE CONTRAST The first comedy written by an American citizen that was professionally produced - Set after the Revolutionary War, but don’t let this fool you! There is plenty of things we can relate to in 21st century America, like the theme of home-made versus foreign goods and ideas on moral behaviors, economic liberties and standards of education for their young country. Enter Maria Van Rough - a ―dangerously well-read‖ young lady, betrothed as a child to Billy Dimple, but in love with earnest soldier Henry Manly. Complicating Maria’s life are two calculating belles, a scheming servant, a naive bumpkin and a boorish old father. It is ― a sophisticated, subversive, and dead funny piece of theater.‖ July 14, 19, 22

A THOUSAND CLOWNS A heartwarming comedy ―filled with laughter and warmth,

sweetness and inspired daffiness.‖ - The New York Daily News A coming-of-middle-age story of eccentric bachelor Murray Burns, an unemployed children’s television writer, who is raising his sister’s son after she went out for a pack of cigarettes and never returned. When social workers come (cont.)

Neighborhood Crime Corner Editor—instead of the usual Police Blotter, I received this email from Lt. Tracy Hern with the Sunnyvale Dept of Public Safety.

Subject: Ongoing Internet Scams

I wanted to pass along reminder information about email and internet scams.

Recently an internet scam has come to our attention. This scam is not new and in fact was first discovered in 2008 and resurfaced in 2010 and 2011. The scam claims to be from the FBI informing you that you have been the victim of an internet fraud. The scam wants you to confirm with them via email about any accounts, winnings or other ongoing financial gains you are receiving from the lottery, the government or any other group.

This is a CONFIRMED scam and false representation. As a reminder, no government agency will contact you asking for any personal banking information, password or other identifying information. Most internet scams originate outside of the United States and are blatantly lacking in proper English grammar. This should be your first clue that it is a scam

Common internet and email scams are: ―Advanced Fee/Payment‖, ―Faulty Loan or Credit Payment‖ and ―Identity Theft of a friend claiming to need money sent to them overseas‖.

Additional information regarding these scams and Internet Fraud safety tips, can be found on the FBI website at http://www.fbi.gov/scams-safety/fraud/internet_fraud/internet_fraud

Thank you for your continued support of the City of Sunnyvale, Department of Public Safety.

(Editor-recently I was woke up at 6:00am by a caller claiming I had a “computer virus.” After telling the caller to “go away”, I have found out that several people (including my parents) have received the same call. If you get a call like this, tell them to not call you again and HANG UP! Do not give them any information, not even your name! This is also a scam.)
