Cuthbert Esquire Dukes (1890–1977) was born at Somerset, En-gland. He took his medical training at Edinburgh, receiving hisM.D. degree in 1918. His first appointment was in the bacteriologylaboratory at the University College, London. Later, he joined thestaff of St. Mark’s Hospital for Diseases of the Colon and Rectumwhere he established the first registry of familial polyposis. In 1932he published in the Journal of Pathology (London) his scheme for aclassification of carcinoma of the rectum according to the extent ofinvolvement. While the original ‘‘Dukes’’ was later expanded(notably by Astler and Coller in 1954), the basic concept waspreserved and continues to serve in formulating prognosis. SirCuthbert, as he was known after being knighted, was a Quaker, and itis said his demeanor reflected the gentleness and tranquility typical ofthat faith.
