Cuthbert Esquire Dukes (1890–1977) was born at Somerset, En- gland. He took his medical training at Edinburgh, receiving his M.D. degree in 1918. His first appointment was in the bacteriology laboratory at the University College, London. Later, he joined the staff of St. Mark’s Hospital for Diseases of the Colon and Rectum where he established the first registry of familial polyposis. In 1932 he published in the Journal of Pathology (London) his scheme for a classification of carcinoma of the rectum according to the extent of involvement. While the original ‘‘Dukes’’ was later expanded (notably by Astler and Coller in 1954), the basic concept was preserved and continues to serve in formulating prognosis. Sir Cuthbert, as he was known after being knighted, was a Quaker, and it is said his demeanor reflected the gentleness and tranquility typical of that faith. —Contributed by WILLIAM S.
