DOCUMENT CAMERAS BRING DIMENSION TO LEARNING

RICHARDSON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT, RICHARDSON, TEXAS**

Interview with Sandra Hayes, Executive Director of Informational Technology at Richardson Independent School District in Richard, Texas.

When Sandra Hayes and staff at Richardson ISD (TX) began developing plans to improve educational technology across district campuses, their first priority was to “think in 3 dimensions.”

That is, one of the primary objectives was to replace the flat, two-dimensional method of using overhead projectors with the 3-dimensional, true to life projection possible using document cameras.

Richardson and a team of IT professionals, curriculum managers and district staff chose the Dukane Document Camera 335 to accomplish additional goals such as ease of use, a key priority to make it possible for all teachers to enjoy success using educational technology.

“We wanted a standardized educational technology platform at all our campuses. The document camera is a versatile solution that fits into any curriculum. They don’t take up a lot of space. They allow a great visual line of sight for students. The light on the camera lets you control the image quality and you can capture and save whatever you display. It’s also a tool that works at any grade level,” Hayes notes. “Plus it’s almost self explanatory to set up and use. You can take them out of the box and be teaching in minutes. Our support personnel on each campus are primarily there to help teach-ers see how educational technology works together; document cameras, projectors and curriculum material.”

Richardson ISD also specified the Dukane Audio Visual 5-Year Warranty in its bid for document cameras because the Richardson ISD investment in educational technol-ogy will be supported well into the future.

Feedback from teachers using the Camera 335 in the classroom include observations about “better student engagement as students can see the material being presented much better when it is captured by the Camera 335 and delivered on screen through data projectors.” While Richardson ISD has been pleased with its transition from 2-D to 3-D instruction, the district is adding yet another dimension to its classrooms: teacher mobility, which is made possible through purchase and use of Dukane AirSlate3 annotation slates. “Teachers like the Airslates because they can move around the classroom while they work with students. They aren’t tied to their desk and can even share the slates with students and let them use the Slates to answer questions and participate in class. The AirSlates are very durable and get handed around the room during class. We’re using them with secondary math primarily, and are planning a rollout of AirSlate3’s to 3 other campuses.”

Richardson ISD has come a long way from simply wanting to replace and expand display materials in the classroom. That is the sign of a school with its eyes on the future of educational technology.

With its unique flexible gooseneck

design, high resolution lens and ability

to zoom, capture and display images,

the Camera 335 has proven to be a

key classroom solution for Richardson

ISD.

DATA PROJECTORS, AIRSLATES & STUDENT RESPONSE CREATE INTERACTIVE CLASSROOMS

WAYNE METROPOLITAN SCHOOL DISTRICT, INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA**

Interview with Pete Just, Chief Information Officer at Wayne Metropolitan School district in Indianapolis, IN

In 1999, Wayne Township School District installed data projectors in every one of its classrooms. That seemingly simple step puts Wayne ahead of many districts in the United States who are seeking to update educational technology now that it has been declared a key priority by US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and President Barack Obama.

In addition to Installing a dependable source of data projection, Wayne MSD decided to take another important step in managing its educational technology. The district contracted Dukane Audio Visual whose Convey Solutions software makes it easier for teachers to use audio visual technology in the classroom. Convey Audio Visual Con-trol has been deployed in every Wayne Township classroom and enables teachers run all their audio visual equipment from a control panel on their personal computer.

Chief Information Officer Pete Just of Wayne Township explains the reason for choos-ing Convey: “The great thing about Convey is that it not only enables us to help teachers become better users of audio visual devices, it is allowing us to more eas-ily transition our classrooms to newer technology. For example, VCR tapes were a staple in many classrooms for years, but that technology is essentially being phased out. Now, using Convey, a teacher can replace material they once called up on tape by going to the web to grab curriculum material that is far easier to use, and in many cases more current.”

Pete Just says the district’s commitment to making classroom technology more available and easy to use has been a “game changer” in more ways than one. “When we elected to make it possible to bring the Internet into the class, we changed the pedagogy* and devices like overhead projectors have started to disap-pear.”

The Wayne MSD transition continues with introduction of the Dukane AirSlate, the mobile annotation tablet enabling teachers to run programs on their desktop computer from anywhere in the classroom. The AirSlate3 lets users annotation and capture les-sons for review or distribution after class is through.

Convey software and the AirSlate3 make Wayne MSD classrooms an easier, more functional environment for teachers. Using Convey Audio Visual Control software they have remote control of audio visual devices. Using the AirSlate3 teachers can now move more freely about the classroom room to lead lessons while interacting with students. Students can even share in the presentation process and lead lessons themselves using the AirSlate3.

“The amazing thing about the AirSlates,” Pete Just observes, “is they’re a superior technology that is actually as affordable as some of our older technologies like over-head projectors. We certainly like that!”

While the district is in constant assessment of next steps in educational technology, CIO Pete Just is pleased that almost every teacher in the district now embraces the benefits of well managed educational technology. “That was one of our key goals,” he enthuses.

Teachers can move freely about the classroom using Dukane’s AirSlate3, the annotation teaching device that weighs just 3 lbs. and uses stable RF technology.

Audio Visual ControlPutting educational technology to use in the classroom is much simpler using Convey Solutions Audio Visual Control from Dukane. The software does all the work of turning devices on and off. It even notifies the central office when maintenance is needed.

DOCUMENT CAMERAS OPEN CHANNELS TO NEW EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY

LOVEJOY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT, ALLEN, TEXAS

Interview with Tina Phillips, Technology Coordinator at Lovejoy Independent School Lovejoy ISD in Allen, Texas.

Lovejoy Independent School District serves 3250 students on 5 campuses in Allen, Texas. When the district set out to standardize its educational technology, issues of price, function and utility were obvious considerations. Technology Coordinator Tina Phillips, Mitci Allen, Director of Instructional Technology and a team of curriculum and IT directors selected the Dukane Document Camera 335 because it offered the versatility necessary to function across a spectrum of grades, subjects and curriculum goals in the district.

Interest in the Document Camera 335 began when the products were first offered to teachers attending a 2-week summer educational technology training course. Word spread quickly about the benefits of the Camera 335 as a teaching tool. “They were so popular,” Tina Phillips admits, “Teachers were fighting over them.”

The Camera 335’s popularity derives from how many things it can do. Math teachers project and capture lessons from hard copy material. Science teachers easily present real objects in magnified form. Literature, social studies and history instructors present images and text with ease using the camera’s high-resolution lens on an adjustable gooseneck mount.

As the district moved to install an integrated media system in each new and existing class-room, the Camera 335 was incorporated as a standard for all classrooms. The rollout did require something of a transitional period. “Most of our teachers are early embracers of technology,” Phillips notes. “But not everyone. We provide an instructional technology

support staff to work with our teachers. We also provide a web site and associated seminars titled “Learning at Lovejoy” that teachers can use if they have questions.”

The district’s standard integrated media system includes a data projec-tor, whiteboard and the Dukane document camera 335. Recently Lovejoy began integrating Dukane’s Convey Student Response System as well as Dukane Airslates in selected classrooms. “When our teachers see what

student response can do for learning, they embrace it pretty quickly. There’s not a lot of prep work needed to get started.”

Currently Lovejoy has distributed Convey Student Response kits to 3 of its 5 campuses. “We’d used another kind of student response before, but teachers complained there was too much setup and it wasn’t easy enough to use. Convey has proven to be a more efficient, effective option for us,” Tina Phillips says.

Students and teachers in Lovejoy ISD have now come to expect these forms of edu-cational technology in the baseline for learning. One new teacher who joined Lovejoy ISD before document cameras were standardized to each classroom called the central office to admit, “I don’t think I can teach without one.” These days everyone at Lovejoy ISD

CONCLUSION

While educational technology continues to advance, getting the basics right to make ed tech easier for teachers to use in the classroom is key to success in implementation.
