Come on down to the sparkling new Dugdale Centre Enfield Town for some real treats. Just for you we have the best in arts and entertainment, from fringe to films and comedy to cabaret.

For all you Lovers out there we have reggae stars Janet Kay, Victor Romero evans and carroll Thompson bringing us their Lover’s Rock Monologues, a tribute to the era of Lover’s Rock music - perfect for a special Valentine’s night and guaranteed to bring back some memories of a time when ‘romantic reggae’ allowed people to experience intimacy and healing through dance and music.

Fresh from the Edinburgh fringe, Crosscut present Shadow boxing, one man’s quest to prove himself as a prize fighter, and Gareth Armstrong’s Shylock, based on Shakespeare’s infamous character, both receiving five star reviews.

How about something new? Rioting for Dummies is a topical drama by resident theatre company Finger in the Pie, a high energy romp through contemporary British politics with silly costumes and cutting comedy.

And for children we have some really great educational drama; boat 13: A Titanic encounter is a one-woman show telling the experiences of a young girl travelling third class on-board the ill-fated liner, a heart-moving production blending story and history.

For those of you who want something lighter (and sweeter!) Hansel and Gretel will be filled with singing, dancing and lots of audience participation, a real tasty treat of a show! We are also proud to host Chickenshed’s popular Tales from the Shed, as well as Skewbald Theatre’s interactive stories, told through drama, music, song, puppetry and animation.

We’re looking forward to this season’s eclectic mix, and we hope you are too; whether you want to laugh with us or learn with us, or just chill out and watch a film, get down to the town and let us entertain you. See you soon.

Directed by award winning director/producer Menelik Shabazz. Often dubbed ‘romantic reggae’, Lover’s Rock is a unique British sound that developed against a backdrop of racial tension in the late 70s and 80s. In the midst of the Brixton riots, racially-motivated crime and subsequent black activism, Lover’s Rock helped to bridge a multicultural gap and allowed young people to experience intimacy and healing through dance.

Containing interviews, comedy sketches, dance, live performances and archive footage, this feature-length shows how young people identified with Lover’s Rock music as it spoke to their notions and emotions of romantic love and formed a coping mechanism for what they were experiencing on the streets.

Featuring appearances from reggae greats Janet Kay, Victor Romero evans and carroll Thompson, who will all performing at the Dugdale from Tuesday 14th February to Saturday 18th February, as well as comedienne Angie Le Mar, performing at Millfield Theatre from Wednesday 9th May to Sunday 20th May, this show sheds light on the music that spoke to people, and the generation that embraced it.

by Alex Werner of the Museum of LondonMarking the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens, this illustrated lecture by Alex Werner, curator of the current ‘Dickens and London’ exhibition at the Museum of London, will explain how Dickens’ experiences of London were introduced into the stories he wrote, discovering the places and subjects which stimulated his imagination. His writings form a giant atlas of the life of the metropolis. The great social questions of the 19th century, including wealth and poverty, prostitution, childhood mortality and philanthropy will be examined, all of which set the scene for Dickens’ greatest works. The talk will include some photographs of the Enfield area taken by William Attwood in the 1870s and 1880s.

Villain..? Victim..? or is Shylock someone even more intriguing?

Shylock is one of only two Jewish men in the whole of Shakespeare. Throughout history, he has been portrayed in ways which reflected the way Jews were popularly viewed - from Comic Villain in Shakespeare’s day to victim of racial discrimination nowadays. Shylock is explained to us through his (only) friend Tubal who leaves us with a deeper understanding of the issues that Jews have faced through history.

Gareth Armstrong’s Shylock comes to Dugdale after rave reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe and Guy Masterson, perhaps the world’s leading exponent of the form, demonstrates its brilliance in a performance that celebrates the beauty of language, the power of history and the magic of theatre!
