Art, Grade 6 ,Q4, week 4 | Due: May 8 Drawing Koi Fish in the Yellow River Some of the most famous and recognizable Chinese and Japanese artwork is that of the carp fish. Most Asian art enthusiasts are familiar with carp paintings and ukiyo-e woodblock prints, as well as the artwork it has inspired around the world. The carp is said to physically resemble a dragon. In fact, one of the most popular Chinese carp motifs is a carp(s) swimming toward a waterfall and transforming into a dragon. This motif is based on an ancient Chinese legend about carp who swim upstream in the Yellow River (Yangtze River) toward the mythical Dragon's Gate at the top of a giant legendary mountain. Those few carp who swim up the waterfall and through the gate are changed into dragons. To this day there exists a saying in China: "lǐ yú tiào lóng mén", or "The carp has leaped through the dragon's gate." This saying is often used for students who pass their exams, or people in general who work hard at a task and succeed beyond their wildest expectations. Your Assignment: Draw 2 Koi fish in the Yellow River (Yangtze) in China : To build upon your knowledge of the Yellow River (Yangtze) in China from your Social Studies projects, you will be working on a drawing of 2 koi fish in the Yellow river. On the attached page there are 2 instructional pages of how to draw koi fish. You are to practice drawing the fish until you feel confident. Then, you are to draw 2 fish, color them in an interesting way (with or without scales) and show them swimming in the Yellow River. Will you leap through the dragon’s gate on this project? Your Assignment: In 1 point perspective, Draw the Yellow River (Yangtze) in China and the surrounding Mountain Ranges around it (Himalayan and Mt. Everest) :

In Q3 we did a 1 point perspective project with shapes. We drew a horizon line, a vanishing point, shapes, and drew converging lines from the corners of each shape to the vanishing point using a ruler. In this project you are going to use the same 1 point perspective process but you’re doing it with a river and mountains instead of shapes. If you need help remembering how to draw in 1 point perspective, look at the link listed above.

Step 1: Draw a horizon line across your page from left to right about 1/3 from the top.Step 2: Draw a vanishing point in the middle of the line. Step 3: Measure 4” from the left and right bottom corners and make marks on the bottom of the page. Step 4: Using a ruler, make a line from the vanishing point to the to marks at the bottom of the page. These marks will be the sides of the river. This also might look like a road, but for our project it is a river. If you would like a natural looking river, you can make wavy lines that go to the vanishing points. (See above pictures). Step 5: Add trees alongside the river that start larger at the bottom of the page and get smaller as they go towards the vanishing point. (objects get smaller as they go into the distance)Step 6: Add mountains in the back to represent The Himalayan mountains with a super tall mountain to represent Mt. Everest.Step 7: Add color to your entire drawing of the Yellow River and Himalayans. Add value so that your drawing doesn’t look flat. Add texture in the trees in the form of leaves. Add lighter and darker areas in the water to show flowing water. Add things that you think would be in a river scene.

Extra credit: Remember, the river is called the Yellow river. Can you tell me what makes the yellow river yellow? Tell me when you turn in your project and I’ll give you 5 bonus points..

Your Assignment: Draw the Mystery Drawing from the secret gridThis is a mystery drawing and I’m super excited for you to try it. You will not know what the final outcome will be unless you follow the directions. Usually when you are drawing on a grid you look at a picture with a grid on it and then look at each square and then draw what’s in each square on a separate piece of grid paper.

For the mystery drawing you have a page that has grid coordinates and images with labels that have numbers and letters. You also have a separate piece of labeled grid paper that you will need to print out and do the drawing on.

How will I do this: Step 1: Print out the blank grid piece of paper. If you don’t have a printer, use a piece of paper and a ruler to make your own grid on copy paper. Step 2: Look at the mystery grid page with the black/white images on them. Draw each of the images in the boxes on the blank piece of grid paper. Follow the order from the top left of the mystery grid page to the bottom right in order to keep the drawing a mystery. See the above photo if you are having trouble understanding these directions. You can also contact me if you have questions.Step 3: Take a photo of your completed mystery grid drawing when you are done with your name at the top.
