Conductor Gustavo Dudamel will be conducting the Berlin Philharmonic (BPO) at Shenzhen Concert Hall this November.
The program for Nov. !$ includes Leonard Bernstein�s �Symphony No. !,� also called �Jeremiah,� with mez-zo-soprano Tamara Mumford from the Metropolitan Opera, and Dmitri Shostakovich�s �Fifth Symphony.�
On Nov. !&, the Berlin Philharmonic will perform Bernstein�s �Divertimento� as well as Mahler�s �Symphony No. '.�
First founded in !%%* by '0 musi-cians, the BPO has been rated by the British magazine Gramophone as one of the top three of European orchestras. Herbert von Karajan led the orches-tra from !#'' until his resignation in April !#%#, only months before his death. Under him, the orchestra made a vast number of recordings and toured widely, growing and gaining fame. Today, many Chinese classical music fans call BPO the �best symphony orchestra in the universe,� evidence of their love for the philharmonic.
The fourth movement of Mahler�s �Symphony No. '� is the most fre-quently performed of his works, having been used by � gure skaters at Olympics, for � lm scores and the ABC television show �Marvel�s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.�
Dudamel, born in !#%!, is widely known as one of the world�s top three younger-generation conductors, along with Daniel Harding and Yannick Nezet Seguin.
The +&-year-old took up violin at !", and then composition and conducting at !0. Dudamel has won a number of conducting com- petitions, includ-ing the presti-gious Gustav Mahler Con-ducting Prize in Germany in *""0. He is now the music direc-tor of the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Ancient Chinese texts are classi� ed into four categories: jing (classics ㈎), shi (history 㬘), zi (philosophy 䓴) and ji (literature ゐ).
At the exhibition, visitors will not only admire �The Collection of Mr. Hui�an,� a Song Dynasty book on Confucianism, but also have a glimpse into Korean and Japanese books on Confucianism.
Mr. Hui�an was an alias of Chinese philosopher Zhu Xi (!!+"-!*""), a Confucian scholar. He has been called the second-most in1 uential thinker in Chinese history, after Confucius him-self. The Korea-originated editions were printed in the !'th century while the Japanese-originated editions were made in the !#th century. These for-
eign-printed books, although still in Chinese language, exemplify the two Asian countries� admiration for Con-fucianism.
Visitors can also have a glance at a wood-engraving printing board and a movable type printing board made in the Qing Dynasty (!$00-!#!!), as well as the butter1 y binding method.
