Introduction

This method is used for determining the

ductility of bituminous materials by mea-suring the elongation before breaking whentwo ends of a briquette specimen are pulled

apart at a specified speed and temperature.The test is performed with a ductility machi-ne, which is proposed in two versions:

81-B0140 standard version and 81-B0140/Bincorporating a liquid refrigerator-circulatorto perform tests at a temperature below

25°C or for use in tropical areas.Furthermore the standard ductility machine

81-B0140 can be upgraded with a Forceductility kit to measure the tensile forceexerted on the specimens and determining

the conventional energy of bitumen bindersfrom traction characteristics.This upgraded option (see code 81-B0140/

UP1) includes three load cells, digital displayunit and Macro-Excel program for dataacquisition and processing for connection

to PC.

General description

The machine can perform three simul-

taneous tests. The bath is fitted with animmersion heater in order to obtain, innormal conditions, the 25°C test tempe-rature using, as stabilising element, thecold water circulation in the stainless steelinterspace.For use in tropical areas or to perform testsbelow 25°C, the use of the 80-B0140/Bmodel with liquid refrigerator-circulator isrecommended.This refrigerator-circulator unit has beenspecially designed for laboratory use toprovide either cold water or for closedcirculation of either water or ethylene

glycol. Comprising a refrigeration com-pressor, silent and CFC free, water reservoirwith cooling coil, electronic thermoregu-lator with digital display, which shows thewater/liquid output temperature.The unit include a liquid circulator pumpfor controlling the interspace casing of theductility machine bath and a resistanceheater fitted in the water reservoir todecrease, if needed the thermal inertia ofthe system.Both versions can be upgraded to measurethe tensile force. Force ductility kitThe 81-B0140 and 81-B0140/B machinescan be upgraded with the installation ofthree load cells in line with each ductilitymould and specimen test position, to mea-sure the tensile force and determine theconventional energy of bitumen bindersfrom traction characteristic. The kit, whichhas to be factory installed, includes:- Three load cells 50 N cap. each

- Three channels digital display unit withRS 232 output for PC or printer

- Macro-Excel program for data acquisitionand PC processing

- Installation on the ductility machine.
