Dua Iftitah

It is recommended to recite the

following Du`a' al-Iftifah every night in

the Month of Ramadhan:

الل ه ناءبمدكأف تتح الث مإن O Allah: I begin the glorification of

You with praising You:

ك،واببن دللصوأنتم سد And You always guide us to the right

out of Your favoring upon us.

أن كأنتأرحم الراحينفموضعوأي قنت حة،العفووالر

And I am certain that You are the

most Merciful of all those who show

mercy in situations of pardon and

mercy

قمة،كالوالن الم عاقبينفموضعالنوأشد But You are the very exacting in

situations of giving exemplary

punishment and chastisement (to the

wrongdoers),

ينفموضعالكبيءوأعظم الم تجب والعظمة.

And You are the greatest Omnipotent

in the domain of absolute power and

might.

مأذنتلفد عائكومسألتك،الل ه O Allah: You have permitted me to

pray and beseech You.

يع مدحت، فاسعيسSo, listen, O the All-hearer, to my

words of praise,

وأجبيرحيم دعوت،And please reply my prayer; O the All-

merciful.

وأقليغف ور عث رت،And please overlook my slips; O the

Oft-Forgiving.

ك ربةقدف رف يمن جت ها،كميإلYou, O my God, have relieved so many

of my griefs,

كشفت ها، وه ومقدAnd You have dispelled so many of

my sorrows

وعث رةقدأق لت ها،And You have overlooked so many of

my slips,

ةقدنشرتا،ورحAnd You have spread over me many of

Your mercies

وحلقةبلاءقدفككت ها؟

And You have unlocked so many of

rings of misfortunes (in which I was

detained).

خذصاحبةولاولداذيلي تالل المد All praise be to Allah Who has not

betaken wife or son,

وليك نله شريكفالم لك

Dua Iftitah

And Who has no partner in the

sovereignty,

ه تكبيرا.وكب ل منالذ وليك نله وليnor has He any protecting friend

through dependence. And Magnify

Him with all magnificence.

ك ل ل المد يعبميعمامده ها،علىجك ل ها.نعمه

All praise be to Allah with full

gratitude for all His bounties.

له فم لكه،ذيلام ضادالل المد All praise be to Allah Who has no

opposition in His rule,

ولام نازعله فأمره.nor there is any challenge to His

commands.

ذيلاشريكله فخلقه،الل المد All praise be to Allah Who has no

counsel to meddle with His operation

of creation,

ولاشبيهله فعظمته.nor there is anything similar to Him

in His greatness.

الفاشيفاللقأمر ه وحد ه ،ل المد All praise be to Allah Whose

commandments are active in the

creation and the praising of Whom is

incumbent.

الظاهربلكرممد ه ،His glory is evident through His

kindness,

الباسطبل وديده ،His distinct overflowing generosity is

freely available,

خزائن ه ،ال ق ص ذيلات ن His unlimited bestowals do not

exhaust,

ج وداوكرما كث رة العطاءإلا ولاتزيد ه

and He does not swell the numerous

benefits except because of generosity

and kindness.

.إن الوهاب ه ه والعزيز Verily He is Mighty, Generous.

الل ه كثير،أسأل كقليلامإن منO Allah, I ask for some from much,

معحاجةبإليهعظيمة

in the midst of my many needs for

which I entirely depend on You,

وغناكعنه قديموه وعنديكثير،and You since eternity, are able to do

without them, but for me it is a titanic

effort

وه وعليكسهليسير.and for You it is very easy and simple.

عفوكعنذنب،مإنالل ه O Allah, truly, as You pardon my sins,

خطيئت،وتاو زكعنAnd You overlook my mistakes;

وصفحكعنظ لمي،

And You take a lenient view of my

disorderly conduct,

وستكعلىقبيحعملي،And You cover up my foul actions,

كانمن كثيرج رميعندما وحلمكعن ديخطإيوعم

And You show consideration in spite

of my many transgressions committed

willfully or negligently,

أطمعنفأنأسألكمالاأست وجب ه منكذيرزق تنمنرحتك،ال

All that tempted me to ask for that

which I do not deserve, from You, on

account of Your mercy, that You may

give me the daily bread;

وأري تنمنق درتك،And You may provide with that which

is suitable for me, through Your

control;

ف تنمنإجابتك،وعرAnd You may distinguish me with

favorable reply to my requests.

أدع وكآمنا، فصرت So, I persist in calling out, believing in

You,

،وأسأل كم ستأنسالاخائفاولاوجلاand I invoke You, talking familiarly,

not afraid, nor shy,

فيهم دلا ،ليكإعليكفيماقصدت but assured of Your love and kindness

whenever I turn to You.

بهليعليك،أبطأعن فإن عت بت A temporary setback and I, out of

ignorance, begin to despair,

ه وخيرللعلمكذيأبطأعن الولعلبعاقبةالأ م ور،

although perhaps slowing down may

be a blessing in disguise, because You

alone knows (all) the consequences.

كريماأصبعلىعبدلئيم ف لمأرمول

،منكعليI do not know a generous Master who

is more accommodating to the

dissatisfied servants than You are to

me.

عنك،تدع ونفأ ول إنك،يرب O Lord! You give an invitation but I

turn down,

إلوت تحب فأت ب غب ،إليكض And You become familiar with me but

I do not care for You,

فلاأق بل منكد إلوت ت ود

And You show affection to me but I do

not correspond to You

لعليك،طو لالتكأنas if You are overreaching me!

حسانحةلوف لميمن عكذلكمنالر ال

Yet You do not abstain from having

mercy upon me and doing favors to

me

ب ودكوكرمك،لعليفض والت and blessing me out of Your

magnanimity and generosity,

فارحمعبدكالاهلوج دعليهبفضل إحسانك

So, (please) have mercy on Your

ignorant servant and bestow upon

him with the favors of Your

beneficence

كريم.إنك جوادVerily, You are Generous and Kind.

مالكالم لك،ل المد

All praise be to Allah: the owner of the

sovereignty,

م ريالف لك،Who sets the course of skies and the

stars,

يح،رالر م سخ Who controls the winds,

فالقالصباح،Who causes the day break,

نالد ين،ديand Who administers the authority:

العالمين.رب the Lord of the worlds.

علىحلمهب عدعلمه،ل المد

All praise be to Allah for His

indulgence although He has full

acquaintance with all things.

علىعفوهب عدق درته،ل والمد All praise be to Allah for His amnesty

although He has full power over all

things.

علىط ولأنتهفغضبهل والمد

All praise be to Allah for the respite

that He allows inspite of provocation.

وه وقادرعلىماي ريد .He is able to do whatever He wills.

خالقاللق،ل المد All praise be to Allah, the Creator of

all the created beings,

زق،بسطالر Who makes the sustenance freely

available,

فالقالصباح،Who starts the day,

ذياللالوالكراموالفضلوالن عام

Who is the Owner of glory, might,

favours, and bounties,

ذيب ع دفلاي رى،الAnd Who is so far away that none can

ever see Him,

جوى،وق ر بفشهدالنAnd, in the same time, He is so near

that He is fully aware of even the

whispering secrets.

.إلت باركوت عBlessed and Exalted be He.

ذيليسله م نازعي عادل ه ،الل المد All praise be to Allah Who has no

equal to challenge Him,

ولاشبيهي شاكل ه ،nor is there an image comparable to

Him,

ولاظهيري عاضد ه ،nor is there a helper to assist Him.

تهالأعزاء،ق هربعزHe tames the powerful by (His) force,

وت واضعلعظمتهالع ظماء ،

and disgraced are the great ones

before His Greatness,

ف ب لغبق درتهمايشاء .so He, through His power, fulfills that

which He wills.

يب نحينأ نديه،الل المد ذيي All praise be to Allah Who gives

answer to me whenever I call Him;

عورةوأنأعصيه،ك لويست عليAnd He covers up my shortcomings,

yet I disobey Him;

فلاأ جازيه،عمةعليم الن وي عظ And He gives me the largest part of

the bounties, yet I do not show his

gratitude.

فكممنموهبةهنيئةقدأعطان،Many a auspicious favors had He

given me;

كفان، وعظيمةم وفةقدAnd many a terrible dangers had He

turned off,

وبجةم ونقةقدأران؟

And many a blossoming joys had He

made available for me,

فأ ثنعليهحامدا،Therefore, I sing His praises and

recite His glorifications.

حا.وأذك ر ه م سب And mention Him with exaltation.

حجاب ه ،الل المد ذيلاي هتك All praise be to Allah Whose screen

cannot be penetrated

ولاي غلق بب ه ،And Whose door is not blocked;

سائل ه ،ولاي رد And Whose beseecher is not rejected;

ي آمل ه .ولاي ب And one who hopes Him is not

disappointed.

ذيي ؤمن الائفين،الل المد All praise be to Allah Who secures the

frightened ones,

يالصالين،وي نج

Who comes to the help of the upright

ones,

رفع الم ستضعفين،وي Who promotes the cause of the weak

ones,

ويضع الم ستكبين،annihilates the autocrats,

آخرين؛ م ل وكاويستخلف وي هلك Who destroys rulers and appoints

others instead.

رين،قاصمالبال والمد All praise be to Allah; the Eradicator

of the tyrants,

م بيرالظالمين،The Terminator of the unjust ones,

م دركالاربين،The Catcher of the fugitives,

نكالالظالمين،The Punisher of the unjust ones,

الم ستصرخين،صريخThe aide of the seekers of aid,

موضعحاجاتالطالبين،The Settler of the needs of the

beseechers,

م عتمدالم ؤمنين.And the support of the the faithful

believers.

ماء لسذيمنخشيتهت رع د االل المد

ا، وس كان All praise be to Allah! In His awe-

inspiring fear the heavens and its

dwellers tremble and shiver,

وع مار ها، الأرض وت رج ف And the earth and its inhabitants

shake and quiver,

غمراتا،وت وج البحار ومنيسبح فAnd the oceans and all that which

float and swim in their waters flow

together in excitement and tumult.

ك نالن هتديالل المد ذيهدانلذاوما لولاأنهدان .ال

All praise be to Allah Who has guided

us to this. We could not truly have

been led aright if Allah had not guided

us.

لق،الل المد ذييل ق ولي All praise be to Allah Who creates but

He is not created;

، ولاي رزق وي رز ق And He gives subsistence but He

needs no provisions;

وي طعم ولاي طعم ،And He gives food to eat but He takes

no nourishment,

الأحياء، يت ويم And He makes the living dead

وي ييالموتى،And He brings the dead to life,

،وه وحيي لايم وت But He is the Everliving, there is no

death for Him,

ير ، بيدهالin His hands is all the good,

شيءقدير.وه وعلىك ل and He is able to do all things.

مدعلىمصل الل ه عبدكورس ولكم

O Allah: (please do) send blessings on

Muhammad, Your servant and

Messenger,

كوحبيبكوأمينكوصفي

And Your confidant, friend, and

beloved intimate,

وخيرتكمنخلقك،And the choicest of Your created

beings,

ك،وحافظسر And the bearer of Your sacraments,

غرسالاتكوم ب ل

And the quotient of Your Messengers,

أفضلوأحسنوأجل

With the most superior, the most

exquisite, the most handsomer,

وأكملوأزكىوأنى

the most perfect, the most upright,

the most prospering,

أطهروأسنوأطيبو

the most pleasant, the most

thoroughly purified, the most

sublime;

يتوبركتوأكث رماصل

The most and the best blessings,

advantages,

نتتوتن وت رح

mercies, affections

عبادكوأنبيائكمتعلىأحدمنوسل

And salutations that You have ever

made available to anyone of Your

servants and Prophets,

ور س لكوصفوتكوأهلالكرامةعليكمنخلقك.

And Messengers and choicest people

and those honored by You from

among Your created beings.

أميرالم ؤمنين،علىعلي موصل الل ه O Allah: (please do) send blessings on

`Ali, the Commander of the Believers,

العالمين،رس ولرب ووصي And the successor of the Messenger of

the Lord of the worlds:

كوأخيرس ولكعبدكوولي

Your servant, Your beloved

representative, and the brother of

Your Messenger,

تكعلىخلقك،وح جand Your decisive argument over the

mankind,

وآيتكالك بى،And Your most important sign,

العظيم،أبوالن And the great news (from You).

يقةالطاهرةد علىالص وصل

And (please do) send blessings on the

truthful, pure Lady,

دةنساءالعالمين،فاطمةسي Fatimah: the Doyenne of the women

of the world.

حة،يالرعلىسبطوصل And (please do) send blessings on the

sons of ‘the mercy to the worlds’

وإماميال دى

And the two leaders of true guidance,

السنوال سين

Al-Hasan and al-Husayn,

ة،ديشبابأهلالنسي the two Chiefs of the dwellers of

Paradise.

:ةالم سلمينعلىأئموصل And (please do) send blessings on the

leaders of the Muslims,

،علي بنال سين`Ali bin al-Husayn,

،دبنعلي وم مMuhammad bin `Ali,

مدوجعفربن ،م

Ja`far bin Muhammad,

وم وسىبنجعفر،Musa bin Ja`far,

بنم وسى،وعلي `Ali bin Musa,

،دبنعلي وم مMuhammad bin `Ali,

مدبنوعلي ،م `Ali bin Muhammad,

،والسنبنعلي Al-Hasan bin `Ali,

،واللفالاديالمهدي and the successor, the guide, and the

rightly guided

ح ججكعلىعبادك،(Those Imams are) Your decisive

arguments over Your servants,

وأ منائكفبلادك

Your trustworthy confidants in Your

lands—

كثيرةدائمة. صلاةBlessings that are numerous and non-

stop.

أمركعلىول موصل الل ه

O Allah: (please do) send blessings on

the custodian of Your

commandments,

ل،القائمالم ؤم

Dua Iftitah

The vigilant guardian, the reliable

patron,

تظر، والعدلالم ن And the awaited justice.

بين،ه بلائكتكالم قروح فAnd (please) surround him with Your

favorite Angels,

ده بر وحالق د سوأي

And assist him with the Holy Spirit.

العالمين.يربO the Lord of the worlds.

اعيالل ه كتابك،والقائمإلماجعله الدبدينك،

O Allah: (please) choose him to be the

caller to Your Book and the for

establisher of Your religion,

كمااستخلفتال ذيناستخلفه فالأرضله،منق ب

and make him succeed in the earth as

You caused those who were before

him to succeed,

ته له ،نله دينه المك ذيارتضي and establish for him his faith which

You have approved for him

أبدله منب عدخوفهأمنا

And give him in exchange safety after

the fear.

بكشيئا. ي عب د كلاي شرك

Dua Iftitah

He serves You. He ascribes nothing as

partner to You.

ه وأعززبه،مأعزالل ه O Allah: (please) give him power and

authority, and through him

strengthen the people,

وانص ره وان تصربه،And give him the necessary

assistance, and through him support

the people,

وانص ره نصراعزيزا،And help him with a mighty help

واف تحله ف تحايسيرا،And make him prevail over all with

easiness

علله منلد نكس لطاننصيرا.واجAnd delegate him Your controlling

authority.

كةنبي مأظهربهدينكوس نالل ه

O Allah: (please) give currency to

Your religion and to Your Prophet’s

traditions through him

لا مافةيستخفيبشيءمنالق حتأحدمناللق.

So that nothing which is just and

genuine is kept concealed from

anyone of the human beings.

الل ه ن رغب كريمةإليكمإن فدولة

O Allah: we ardently desire that You

confer upon us a respectful

government

باالسلاموأهله ،ت عز Through which You may reactivate

Islam and stimulate its followers,

فاقوأهله ،باالن وت ذل and humble and humiliate the

imposters and their double-dealing

shams,

طاعتك،إلعاةتعل نافيهامنالد وسبيلك،إلوالقادة

and include us among those who

invite people to the obedience to You

and lead them to Your approved path,

كرامةالد .الخرةن ياووت رز ق ناباand give us the good of this world and

the world to come.

لناه ،فحم ف ت نامنالق مماعرالل ه O Allah: let us bear out and hold up

that which You make known to us as

the truth,

غناه .وماقص رنعنه ف ب ل and let us be fully aware of that which

we fall short of doing.

مالم مبهشعث نا،الل ه O Allah: through him, set in order our

disorder;

واشعببهصدعنا،gather and unite our flock;

قنا، وارت قبهف ت stitch together our ripped open

separation;

ت نا،ربهقلوكث turn our want and poverty into

enough,

ت نا،وأعززبهذلlift us up from our degradation;

وأغنبهعائلنا،free us from our misery,

واقضبهعنم غرمنا،pull us out from our debts,

بهف قرن،واجب Set up our poverty

ت نا،بهخلوس د

fill the gap created by confusion

among us;

ربهع سرن،ويس let our difficulties be easy to deal

with;

ضبهو ج وهنا،وب ي refine our substance and style,

بهأسرن،وف كuntie our ropes and straps;

وأنحبهطلب ت نا،let our efforts succeed well and secure

success;

وأنزبهمواعيدن،make us fulfil our promises;

واستجببهدعوت نا،give answer to our prayers;

س ؤلنا،وأعطنابهlisten to our requests;

آمالنا،الخرةن ياوغنابهمنالد وب ل cause us to obtain the good of this

world and the Hereafter;

وأعطنابهف وقرغبتنا،give us much and more than our

expectations

ولين،وأوسعالم عطين،يخيرالمسؤ O the Best of givers and bestowers;

اشفبهص د ورن،

and cleanse our hearts,

وأذهببهغيظق ل وبنا،unburden our emotions from hate and

anger,

بذنك،واهدنبهلمااخت لففيهمنالق and in the event of dispute in the

matter of truth show us the right path,

صراطم ستقيم،إلتديمنتشاء إنكverily You guides whosoever You wills

to the Right Path.

نكوعد و وانص رنبهعلىعد و

Let us, through him, get the better of

Your enemies and our opponents,

آمين.الق إلهO the true God: Be it so!

نشك والل ه إليكمإن

O Allah: we complain to You

ناصلوات كعليهوآله،ف قدنبي About the departure of our Prophet —

Your blessings be on him and on his

Household—

بةولي نا،وغي And about the absence of our leader,

ن،وكث رةعد و And about the big numbers of our

enemies,

ةعددن،وقلAnd about our few number,

بنا،شدو ةالفت

And about widespread disorder,

نا،وتظاه رالز مانعلي and about vicissitudes of time against

us.

مدفصل على وآله،م So, (please do) send blessings on

Muhammad and on his Househod

ل ه ،تحمنكت عج وأعناعلىذلكبفAnd help us overcome all that through

victory from You that You expedite

تكشف ه ،وبض ر And through relieving us from our

injuries

ه ،ونصرت عز And through Your help that You

confirm

ت ظهر ه ،وس لطانحق And through bringing in the rule of

justice and fairplay,

ل ل ناها،ورحةمنكت And through mercy that You expand

over us

وعافيةمنكت لبس ناها،And through good health that You

cover us with,

أرحمالراحين.برحتكيOut of Your mercy, O the most

Merciful of all those who show mercy.
