DISCIPLESHIP UNIVERSITYSPRING 2014
Transforming our world with God’s Word...one life at a time.
W e continue to be amazed by how God is blessing our Discipleship University ministry. While many churches have chosen to close their doors on
Sunday evenings, we continue to see our participation grow each semester. As you browse through this catalogue you will notice discipleship opportunities for every age group and every member of your family. Our desire is to reach and develop each of our members to complete spiritual maturity. In doing so we will be able to continue to reach our ultimate goal of “transforming our world with God’s Word…one life at a time.”
Our spring semester begins on January 19, 2014 and concludes on April 6, 2014. The semester will have ten sessions with two weeks off. Classes will not meet on February 2 as we will have our annual Super Bowl Outreach Fellowships in the homes of our members, and then we will take the night off for Spring Break on March 9. All classes will begin at 5:30pm and conclude at 7pm.
Discipleship University also presents us with a great opportunity for fellowship each week. As we kick off our new semester on January 19 we will also have a big Bluegrass Band and Chili Fellowship at 7pm. You will not want to miss this. It’s a perfect way to warm up on a cold winter night! As usual, we will have our cookie fellowships at 7pm each week with entertainment provided periodically by our preschool and children’s choirs.
As you browse through this catalogue you will notice some great new classes offered by some of the most gifted teachers in the state of Texas. We are blessed to have these leaders among us, and I know you will want to register for your class as soon as possible.
We will have an open house on Sunday morning January 12 where you can meet all of our teachers, ask questions about courses, and register your whole family in the class of your choice. You can also register for classes online at firstdallas.org/du or by calling 214.969.2402. We
look forward to seeing you at Discipleship University!

GOD QUESTIONS: UNDERSTANDING TOUGH BIBLICAL ISSUES Andrew JenningsFrom time to time we have all come across those questions about God
or scripture and thought, “I’ll just have to ask that one in heaven.”
Christianity has tough issues that believers struggle to fully understand:
• Could God have made a world without sin?
• Why does He have Israel wipe out entire nations,
including women and children?
• How could the entire world have been flooded?
• Why do the gospels have different accounts of the same events?
Just because questions are difficult, though, doesn’t mean we can’t
respond to them. This semester, we will dive into the deep waters of
our faith and seek the solutions to these questions as we grow in our
understanding of God. There are good answers, and Christians need to
know them. Do you?

ISRAEL: THE KEY TO SCRIPTURE, THEOLOGY, AND MISSIONSDr. Jim R. SibleyThis series is like a theological tour of Israel. Even as the experience
of actually going to Israel shapes the way in which one reads the Bible, so
a grasp of these eleven biblical principles will open a new understanding
of the Bible, theology, and missions. With a deeper grasp of the Bible, a
better understanding of God’s purposes in history, and a more profound
comprehension of the relationship between Israel and the Church, this
study should result in a firm commitment to the faithfulness of God (not
only to Israel, but to each believer), a better understanding of current
events, and a burden for the salvation of Israel and the nations.

BASIC SEMINAR THE INSTITUTE IN BASIC LIFE PRINCIPLESFacilitated by Charlie FosterAre you seeking answers to questions about life? This DVD seminar, taught
by Dr. Bill Gothard, presents biblical instruction combined with supporting
testimonies to explain how the root causes of life’s problems can be traced
to a violation of seven principles. By focusing on principles rather than
rules, individuals are equipped to make wise choices and avoid patterns
of failure. Practical application of God’s Word focuses on topics such as
overcoming feelings of inferiority, resolving guilt, conquering bitterness,
gaining financial freedom, and many others.

UNLOCKING THE SECRETS OF THE FEASTSMike NortenThe feast customs recorded in Leviticus, from Passover to the Feast of
Tabernacles, have prophecies of God’s plans for the world embedded in
them. Many of these things exposed in the feasts are so explicit about the
events of the first and second coming of the Messiah, that they are quite
shocking. God wanted His people to understand His plans through all their
senses. Get ready to be stunned as you discover the intricate details of the
prophecies illustrated in the observances of these feasts. You will definitely
acquire greater insight into God’s plans for the ages.

SCHOOL OF THE BIBLE
W e are very pleased to offer a new opportunity
for discipleship and learning through
Discipleship University. Each semester, our
School of the Bible offers seminary-quality courses to those
interested in exploring the depths of God’s Word. These
courses are led by the very best professors and teachers
available anywhere. These offerings require an enhanced level
of commitment from participants as they are content and
curriculum intensive. Class size is limited so early enrollment
is highly recommended. Discipleship University School of the
Bible is highly beneficial for leaders, teachers, and anyone
who has a desire to better understand and utilize God’s Word
to make an impact on our world.
KILLING JESUS: HOW CAN WE REVIVE THE FULL DEITY AND FULL HUMANITY OF JESUS TODAY?Dr. Harvey SolganickRecently, Bill O’Reilly, the anchor of The O’Reilly Factor, in his book,
Killing Jesus, details the events leading up to the murder of the most
influential man in history: Jesus of Nazareth. Nearly 2,000 years after
this beloved and controversial young revolutionary was brutally killed by
Roman soldiers, more than 2.2 billion human beings attempt to follow His
teachings and believe He is God. Yet, even though Jesus desires more
to come to Him, many still reject His divinity and even His goals for us
as human beings because they do not know Him. In this study, we will
examine the life, character attributes, and misperceptions of Jesus Christ,
forming a “Christology,” centering upon the understanding of Jesus’
essential question, “Who do you say that I am?”

MINOR PROPHETS WITH A MAJOR MESSAGE: A STUDY OF NAHUM, HABAKKUK, AND ZEPHANIAHDr. Matthew McKellerThis study will focus on the prophetic writings of the minor prophets
Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah. While these three are categorized as
“minor” prophets because of the brevity of their writings in comparison
to major prophets like Jeremiah and Isaiah, there is nothing “minor” about
the message they convey. The aim of this study is to highlight the immense
doctrinal and practical content of these prophetic books which is neglected
all too frequently or is entirely missing in the spiritual diet of believers.
Topics to be covered include:
• Why do the righteous suffer?
• Why do the wicked prosper?
• What it means to live by faith
• We become what we worship: The danger of idolatry
• Understanding the day of the Lord
• Hope in the midst of chaos

THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE FAITH ACCORDING TO W. A. CRISWELLDr. James BryantDr. Criswell preached a series of messages under the series Great Doctrines
of the Faith for three years in the early 1980s. These sermons were later
published in eight volumes. That series is out of print, but preserved in
audio and video at www.wacriswell.com. Dr. James Bryant, Distinguished
Senior Professor of Pastoral Theology at Criswell College, will condense
what Dr. Criswell believed, preached, and wrote into one or two doctrines a
week. These seminars will cover the Doctrine of Revelation and Inspiration
(Bibliology), the Doctrine of God (Theology Proper), the Doctrine of Christ
(Christology), the Doctrine of the Church (Ecclesiology), the Doctrine of
the Holy Spirit (Pneumatology), the Doctrine of Salvation (Soteriology), the
Doctrine of Angels (Angelology), the Doctrine of Last Things (Eschatology),
and a study on The Christian Life and Stewardship.

EXPERIENCING GODKaren BillmanExperiencing God, developed by Henry Blackaby and Claude King, will direct a
believer toward a true, personal relationship with the Lord, for which we were
created. He guides us into a growing relationship, understanding the need for
obedience with the goal of knowing Him more intimately. We were made for
relationship. He is drawing each of us to a point of experiencing Him on earth
as He lives and works through us. How amazing that He wants to involve us in
His plans. How tangible and obvious He can be to us. He desires to give us a
full and purposeful life, using us mightily in His work. We gain eternal life at the
moment we confess and accept Him as Lord, but what an incredible ride it can
be as we take the steps listed in this study!

IT STARTS AT HOMEMichael and Amber VolbedaWho is shaping what your kids believe? Our children can grow up smart, athletic, popular, and polite but lack a vibrant relationship with Christ. The few hours they spend in church each week can be helpful, but it cannot nurture a faith in our kids that will withstand the trials that are on the horizon. Church alone cannot teach them, we must start at home. But many parents feel ill-equipped to develop the faith of their children.
In these six sessions, we will explore biblical and tangible ways that parents—couples, single parents, blended families, and grandparents—can build a legacy of faith for their children. Each Bible study session includes interviews with everyday parents talking about their own doubts, fears and desires. Gary Thomas, Matt Chandler, and Kurt and Olivia Bruner provide powerful teaching that will help you give your kids what they need to build a solid framework for lifelong faith.

ONCE CAPTIVEKerby Anderson, Probe MinistriesKerby Anderson and Probe Ministries will address the key issue facing the
evangelical church in American today: cultural captivity. Paul warns us in
the second chapter of Colossians of being taken captive by the culture.
Most evangelicals today are captive to the culture rather than to Christ. This
experience is designed to bring you face-to-face with the issue of cultural
captivity and learning to choose Christ’s truth over the lies of popular culture.
The course includes a devotional book with readings for each day of this
experience. In addition, daily connections via voicemail and/or email help the
participant keep the key lessons in mind throughout the week.
