FriendshipMy brothers showed me great brotherhood and friendship when my wife passed a couple of years ago. Those who attended her celebration of life services, or reached out to me with cards, or a phone call, or who provided significant donations to her scholarship fund, have really showed me friendship and brotherhood. Some were even willing to walk with me in my pain. I deeply appreciate their friendship.

Following my wife’s death, I came to value male friendships. Not ready to get into the dating world, I sought comfort in the company of other men, healthy balanced men. They were rare and hard to find. Many men would dodge me when they saw me approaching. I wasn’t invited to certain routine male bonding activities any more. I came to realize that they did not want me to rain on their parade with my pain and tears.

Many men have been socialized to value thinking and to devalue feelings. They have been desensitized, taught to endure pain without complaint. As a result, many men suffer from isolation and are prone to addictions and to acting out their feelings in dysfunctional ways. Many are afraid of intimacy, both with men and with women. They hide behind stiff, cold, worn masks.

Underneath all of the sports chatter, many men are sad, lonely, frightened, angry, and ashamed. And the sad part is they don’t even know it. Working hard like a “man”, they gave away their feelings and their humanity. They lose the ability to value their world and to hold life dear. They lose the ability to be trusted and loved.

What happened? We tasted friendship when we were undergrads. We shared life together in “cold dorms”, and stall-less showers and toilets. We went camping, snow skiing, and skipped class for last minute road trips. We shared our hearts, cried together in our beer over some lost love, and shared brotherhood with men who did not think, vote or come from small towns like we did.

Somehow after “the good old days,” we got into a routine of giving ourselves away to make a living. Earning “trophies” became more important than taking time to be real with a friend. Do we just write off our college days and say, “We were just goofy boys?” Do we not hope for some of that same spontaneous fun as we now lose hair and gain inches in what was once “washboard abs”?

There is another way. The DU Circle may give you a chance to re-discover your feelings. In the company of some other brothers you may begin to learn to clarify what you’re feeling and to express those feelings directly and authentically. You may begin to learn to balance the depth of the heart with the wisdom of the mind. If this kind of authenticity sounds attractive to you, then the DU Circle may be for you.

What I have internalized about our principles, I believe a Delta Upsilon man is balanced in feeling and thinking, even amidst great pain and hurt. If necessary, a DU man would rather live with a hurting heart than with a closed one.

The St. Louis “Gateway Arch”, which reflects St. Louis’ role in the Westward Expansion of the United States during the nineteenth century, provided a magnificent backdrop as Delta Upsilon held its 2007 Leadership Institute with its own focus on expansion.

More than 300 DUs, faculty and guests, gathered at the Millennium Hotel for leadership and educational training, brotherhood and camaraderie.

The feeling of brotherhood was in the air Thursday evening at the Opening Banquet, which officially kicked off the weekend. Brother Nate Kuester, Washington State ‘05 was master of ceremonies. Chairman Bill Messick, Lafayette ‘68 introduced DU’s new executive director, Justin Kirk, who unveiled a number of new programs and initiatives for Delta Upsilon.

Attendees witnessed the presentation of the first seven awards to be given throughout the weekend. Alumni Chapter of the Year was awarded to the Cornell Chapter alumni for the third year in a row.

Friday morning’s undergraduate educational session

included a discussion of fraternal values and leadership led by Peter Smithhisler, executive director of the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) and a morning of community service. Also on Friday morning DU brothers traveled to two St. Louis-area Boys and Girls Club locations to work with local children.

Later on Friday brothers attended the Initiation Banquet, which began with a presentation of the annual category awards. Following dinner three men were officially initiated into the Fraternity. Brother Dave Maguire, Southern Illinois ’73 presided over the ceremony as Master along with Adam Culley, Northern Iowa ‘00 as Examiner; Clint Dworshak, North Dakota State ‘00 as Chief Marshal; and Phil Ranford, Culver-Stockton ‘00 as Chaplain. Fraternity President, Brother Bernard Franklin, Kansas State ‘76 delivered an inspirational charge. An exhilarating standing ovation came at the conclusion of the initiation. The banquet was followed by the Undergraduate Convention of voting chapter delegates conducting the annual undergraduate business of the Fraternity.

program presented by Josh Orendi of Phired Up Productions. At the Assembly of Trustees, new Board members were elected. Brother Bill Messick, Lafayette ’68 was re-elected as chairman and Brother Chuck Downton, North Carolina ’66 was elected secretary of the Fraternity. In addition, the Fraternity welcomed Brothers Bob Fisher, Alberta ’76, Joe Heerens, DePauw ’84 and Brad Valentine, Tufts ’67, who were elected as new Board directors.

The DU Educational Foundation was the focus of the luncheon on Saturday with the presentation of Oak Circle awards, a public announcement of a brick campaign and plans for the Founders Memorial Courtyard. Alumni who support the campaign for “A New Chapter in Leadership” were recognized and the annual McQuaid and Oak Circle Scholarship awards were also presented.

The weekend culminated with Saturday’s Grand Banquet. To add to the excitement, three standing ovations were given. The first welcomed the Bucknell Chapter back to the Fraternity’s roll of chapters. Bucknell Chapter President Joe Valickus ‘09 was presented with the re-installation charter. The second welcomed the North Florida Chapter. North Florida Chapter President Matt Breidenstein ‘07 represented DU’s newest chapter, the 151st chapter to be chartered. The third recognized the achievements of the Foundation Chairman, Brother Steve Rowley, Ohio ’65, who was presented with the DU Distinguished Alumni Award, the Fraternity’s highest honor.

The banquet closed with the triumphant celebration of the Rochester Chapter, the 2007 recipient of the DU Sweepstakes Trophy.

Next year’s Leadership Institute, which will take place July 31 - August 3, 2008 in Houston, Texas.

A.S.C. Unveiled The inauguration of the A. S. C.

program took place at the 2007 Leadership Institute. A. S. C. promotes long-time convention attendance of Delta Upsilon’s annual Leadership Institute, Convention and Assembly.

Those who are eligible for A. S. C., must have attended a minimum of seven DU Leadership Institutes. Once enrolled in the program, inductees are recognized with a ribbon and medallion that is worn over the left breast coat pocket, with a gold star added for each subsequent convention year's attendance. The medallions were designed by Herff Jones, DU’s official jeweler. Each medallion is personally inscribed on the back with the brother’s name and chapter.

The program’s name honors the Anti-Secret Confederation formed in 1847 at what became DU’s first Convention in Schenectady, New York and reflects DU’s heritage of non-secrecy. Jokingly, brothers say that it also stand for “Attended Seven Conventions.”

The formation of the A.S.C. helps recognize the value in particpating in DU’s annual Leadership Institute and Convention. Life in DU extends well beyond the walls of a chapter house and an undergraduate experience to a wealth of opportunity for involvement as an alumnus.

Undergraduates and alumni alike are inspired and awakened to the vast opportunities for further involvement in DU and that someday one of its members will break the record for DU convention attendance. The current record has stood since 1931, held by Col. Frederick Crosset, New York 1884, who attended 51 DU conventions in a row.

Steve Rowley Receives Fraternity's Highest Honor

The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented to the individual who has given of himself unselfishly to the Fraternity as a whole, has helped to further the Fraternity’s progress or who by virtue of his achievements has brought honor to Delta Upsilon. The Fraternity’s most recent honoree, Steve Rowley, Ohio ‘65, has done all three.

Brother Rowley has established himself as a leader, both in business and in DU. His leadership has been proven with companies like Day Timers, Inc. and The Paragon, a gift catalog company.

Steve joined the Board of Trustees of the DU Educational Foundation in 1994 and became the Foundation’s ninth chairman in 1997, where he continues to serve today. Not only has the Foundation grown during his leadership, but the positive relationship that he continuously desires to forge with his staff as well as between the Foundation and Fraternity boards would inspire even the most dedicated pessimist.

This award is much deserved by a tireless and faithful brother, and it is proudly awarded by a humbled and grateful brotherhood. Brother Rowley has been long overdue for this recognition, but frankly in recent years has been too busy actually presenting this award to other deserving brothers. On Saturday, August 4, 2007 Brother Rowley, with his wife Sharon in attendance, humbly accepted the award before a standing ovation at Delta Upsilon’s Grand Banquet in St. Louis, Missouri, when the Fraternity finally got the opportunity to say “Steve, now it’s your turn.”

Delta Upsilon recognizes brothers who have given an extraordinary amount of time and inspirational service to a particular Delta Upsilon Chapter. On Thursday, August 2, 2007, it was presented twice, to two of DU’s most active and engaged alumni brothers

Recipients of the Founders Medal embody the spirit of Delta Upsilon’s ideals, follow the example set by our Founding Fathers, and exemplify the qualities and traits of a true DU man, and brothers Robert S. Lannin, Nebraska ‘81, and Richard A. Hegeman, Purdue ‘49 are prime examples of a Founders Medal recipient.

Brother Lannin was a leader in the Nebraska Chapter and immediately became involved as a leader in his alumni chapter after graduation. He has served on his alumni board for many years and has almost always been visible and active as an advisor, mentor, counselor and leader to the undergraduate members of his chapter.

However, his passion for DU and its members did not stop at his own chapter. He is one brother who is keenly aware that DU membership extends well beyond the four walls of his own chapter. For the past several years he has been a consistent and dedicated volunteer for the Fraternity, serving as a faculty member at the Winter Educational Conference and Leadership Institute, consistently emerging as a favorite of the undergraduates. He readily shows by

example his pure interest in the lives of our undergraduate brothers, and to the life of the Fraternity, and shows no signs of stopping.

Brother Hegeman is an integral part of the Purdue Chapter. He has always been an extremely active alumnus and has served for many years on the Purdue Chapter’s Alumni board. Nobody can doubt his affection for DU, and the loyal and dedicated leadership that he has given. Even though he lives in Ft. Collins, Colorado, Dick continues to fly back to Indiana often, simply to attend the alumni board meetings in person.

In the summer of 2001, Dick decided to further the enjoyment of his retirement by joining the DU Educational Foundation’s Board of Trustees. He has been a welcome addition to the Foundation’s leadership and has provided a wealth of knowledge that has helped guide the Foundation these last six years. He completed his service as a Foundation Trustee at this Institute at the conclusion of his second three-year term, effectively retiring from active service.

We would be hard-pressed to find others who are more committed to the values and ideals of DU, who genuinely display their time, care and concern for our undergraduate brothers, and whose dedication and sense of volunteerism knows no boundary. Congratulations brothers. Job well done.

Hazing Hotline (1-888-NOT-HAZE) As part of the ongoing attempt to end hazing on college campuses and particularly within Greek organizations, Delta Upsilon is one of 20 international fraternities and sororities that joined together to establish a Greek Anti-Hazing Hotline. The tollfree number is 1-888-NOT-HAZE (1-888-668-4293). The line is available to those who think they or students they know, have been or may become victims of hazing. Callers may remain anonymous or they can provide personal information so that their concerns can be responded to directly. The Hotline connects to a dedicated voice mailbox at the Cincinnati law firm of Manley Burke, the publisher of Fraternal Law. Manley Burke will monitor the hotline on a daily basis and will forward all messages to the appropriate fraternal organization, along with the hazing laws from the relevant jurisdictions. In states in which the law requires notification of other authorities, this will be done. A hazing alert for an organization not a sponsor will be handled as though that organization were a sponsor. A voluntary invoice will be sent to cover costs. The Hotline is a crucial new tool for Greek organizations to use to fight hazing. The 20 founding sponsors, representing approximately 35 percent of all fraternity and sorority members, have invited other fraternities and sororities to join as official sponsors of the Greek Anti-Hazing Hotline.

Alumni NewsAlberta

Brother W. Kenneth Moore, Alberta ‘49 (Arts) and ‘52 (Law) was awarded Canada’s highest honor, an Order of Canada award. After Naval military service, Brother Moore became an outstanding member and alumnus of Delta Upsilon. He played football at University of Alberta and for the Edmonton Eskimos and Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League. After private legal practice, Moore was appointed as a judge and rose to the position of Chief Justice of the Court of the Queen’s Bench. He served as President of the Alberta Branch of the Canadian Bar Association. Brother Moore has served many civic and community organizations, providing inspiration to younger Delta Upsilon brothers.

Brown

On June 13, the American Orthopedic Association (AOA) presented Dr. Augustus A. White, III , Brown ’57 the AOA–Smith & Nephew Endoscopy Distinguished Clinician Educator Award, honoring his contributions to orthopedics. The award recognizes the recipient’s “personal achievement and broad contribution to orthopaedics,” and emphasizes the “critical role of clinician educators within academic health centers.”

Dr. White was the orthopedic surgeon-in-chief at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts for 13 years, and currently is the Ellen and Melvin Gordon Professor of Medical Education and Professor of Orthopedics at Harvard Medical School (HMS). He is the former Master of the Oliver Wendell Holmes Society at HMS, and trained 25 orthopedic surgeons in spine surgery under the Daniel E. Hogan Spine Fellowship Program.

His interest in orthopaedics stemmed from his experiences in athletics, including at Brown University where he was a varsity athlete in football and lacrosse. His fascination with the orthopaedic treatment of sports injuries led him to attend Stanford Medical School, where he became interested in the problem of back pain. Following graduation, he honed his skills at University of Michigan Medical Center as an intern, then at Presbyterian Medical Center, San Francisco where he was a general surgery resident. He then went to Yale Medical Center, where he completed his orthopaedic residency. He then joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps and served for two years. Following this he studied at the University of Gothenburg and at the Karolinska Institute, where he obtained a Ph.D. for research on the biomechanics of the spine.

On September 1, Robert “Bob” Mazzuca, Cal Poly ’70, assumed the responsibilities of the Boy Scouts of America’s top professional, Chief Scout Executive. Mazzuca, an Eagle Scout who has served in progressively more responsible positions with the BSA for 36 years, will provide general direction of administrative work of the BSA.

“The BSA teaches American youth what I believe they need most—character and integrity,” Mazzuca said. “Our oath teaches a dedication to duty, God, country, others, and self. The Scout Law describes how to live lives of honor. Our goal is to positively impact the future by preparing young Americans to become exceptional adults, by cultivating a sense of community, family, ambition, leadership, and priority, and to live lives that make the world a better place. Scouting is more than what we do; it’s who we are—and what we will be.”

The job is as demanding as any faced by a corporate CEO, requiring extensive knowledge of an organization 1.2 million volunteers strong. Mazzuca also is also responsible for 7,000 dr. augustus a. white, III, Brown ‘57 (left) was honored for his

employees and 304 councils across the country.

“I believe that the BSA can guide today’s diverse youth into adulthood through mentoring and individual attention. Scouting teaches values, leadership, and character that help shape a better future for every young person in our country,” Mazzuca said.

Carnegie

Edward Chuang, Carnegie, 2003 published an article about corporate communications for CIO Magazine. The article was, “Communication with a Corporate Superstar: Lessons from Kobe Bryant.”

DePauw

Jeyson Florez, DePauw ‘07 is spending a year in Costa Rica researching wealth distribution and poverty in Costa Rica as a Fulbright Scholar while serving as a catalyst for long-term leadership development. He plans to pursue a master’s degree in economic development and work for a non-profit organization sponsoring micro-credit opportunities in Latin America.

Lyle McCollum, Indiana ‘02 is better known as “The Oriole Bird”, the official mascot and goodwill ambassador for the Baltimore Orioles professional baseball team. He is one of two men who work as the mascot during Baltimore Oriole home games at Camden Yards.

Illinois

Lt. Col. William McCrindle, Illinois ‘78 was awarded the Air Force Medal for distinguished service in Iraq and Afghanistan. McCrindle is in the Air Force Reserve’s most elite unite based in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Iowa State

Steven C. Loney, Iowa State ’74 was named interim football coach of the Drake University Bulldogs in June. Loney is the former Iowa State assistant coach most recently served as offensive line coach for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals.

Lafayette

James E. Burns, Laffayette ’67 taught for 40 years and became a hero and mentor among the fifth and sixth graders

of three inner-city schools in North and West Philadelphia. Several dozen former students gathered at a surprise retirement party for him at his daughter’s home. Burns became a teacher in the off-season while playing professional baseball in the minor leagues and quickly became devoted to education and helping his students.

The Delta Upsilon Distinguished Mentoring and Teaching Award was presented to Wendy L. Hill, William C. ’67 and Pamela H. Rappolt Professor of Neuroscience at Lafayette’s annual trustee-faculty dinner on May 18. Established in 2000 by alumni of the Lafayette Chapter of Delta Upsilon Fraternity on the 115th anniversary of the Fraternity’s founding, the award recognizes members of the faculty for distinctive and extraordinary teaching through mentoring, which may include advising, undergraduate research, independent study, or any of the many one-on-one mentoring activities that take place in a student-centered learning environment

Louisville

R. Sean Deskins, Louisville ‘04, was selected as a Fulbright Scholar for the 2007-2008 academic year. Deskins, 25, graduated from the Louis D. Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville in May and will spend 10 months teaching and conducting research in Slovakia at Comenius University’s Institute of International Relations and the Approximation of Law. His research will focus on how developments in Slovak labor law have affected the rights of workers and businesses. He will also teach courses on the American legal system and U.S. human rights and anti-discrimination law to Slovak law students. In law school, Deskins served as Moot Court Board President and Honor Council Chair. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history and Latin American Studies and as an undergraduate, he served as chapter secretary, vice president for member education, and fundraising chair.

Manitoba

Theodore S. Srivastava, Manitoba ‘05 was the final runner to finish the 26.2-mile Manitoba Marathon. Srivastava told Winnipeg Free Press, “I’m pretty proud of myself. Coming to the finish, I was thinking ‘I’m done’ and I didn’t quit. I set a goal, and I completed it, so it feels good.” He finished in six hours and 49 minutes.

Pacific

The Robert T. Monagan Award Dinner was held on March 30 with both undergraduates and alumni attending the black tie optional event at the Stockton Country Club. Alumni from Delta Upsilon and Omega Phi Alpha were joined by University administrators, including the University

President and Athletic Director, as well as wives, girlfriends and other Greek alumni. Posters around the banquet room highlighted the life and achievements of award recipient, David Gerber ‘51 and a parade of alumni speakers summarized

his legacy. They spoke of his time in WWII as a POW, his achievements as an undergraduate and his transition into his career as a television and movie producer as well as his commitment to the University and to Delta Upsilon. The emcee was five time NFL All-Pro, Brother Eddie LeBaron ‘50.

San Jose

Like the Phoenix, the mythical bird of great beauty, rising from the ashes of its predecessor, the glorious new Delta Upsilon Fraternity house stood proudly on September 28 as more than 300 undergraduates, alumni, wives and guests admired the strength, character, beauty and functional design of the chapter house. A fire had consumed all but the shell of the house in January 2005.

“The building has character and traditional value. It is functional. It came out as we had hoped,” said Ed Mosher, President of the Delta Upsilon Corporation of San Jose,

and Chairman of the Building Program. Mosher went on to say, “Ernesto ‘Tito’ Cendejas, was the chapter president at the time of the fire and was working as a designer in the architectural offices of Barry Swenson, builder. Ross Fuller ’49, vice chairman of the building program and I and so many of us were here and worked together on a day-to-day basis with the design and reconstruction of the building. It was a three and a half million dollar reconstruction project. We’re now looking at a four million dollar structure. I’m sure it ranks now as one of the top fraternity houses in the country.”

San Jose State University President Don Kassing said, “The energy and leadership shown by Delta Upsilon in the renovation of their chapter house was good for all of us. I’m real proud when that kind of leadership is shown on our campus.”

Syracuse

With the publication of “Sudden Death,” Michael Balkind, Syracuse ‘83, has fulfilled a lifelong desire to write a novel. Balkind graduated from Syracuse University with a bachelors degree in economics. He has had a successful 20-year career in sales and marketing and has owned several businesses. “Sudden Death,” is a golf suspense novel, soon to be released, “The Foundation,” is a sports mystery and “Stealing Gold,” is an Olympic ski mystery in the works. IBM elected William Brody, Technology ‘65, to its board of directors effective July 31. Brody, who has degrees in electrical engineering and medicine, has been president of Johns Hopkins University since 1996. He is on the boards of several corporations and government committees, and in

Washington State

Nate Kuester, Washington State ’05 joined “FOX 12 This Morning” as an anchor providing weather, news and sports to Boise, Idaho. Kuester’s early broadcasting career began at age 15 when he experimented with radio as a DJ.

Forty one Washington State University Delta Upsilon alumni, undergraduates, parents and guests participated in the annual WSU DU Worm Burner Golf Tournament on Saturday June 23 at Druids Glen Golf Club in Covington, Wash. They raised $4,750 for the Jason Taitch Memorial Scholarship Fund.

After a courageous battle with a rare cancer Jason Taitch, Washington State ‘94 finally gave up the “good fight” in December of 2006. Jason faced life’s challenges head on with strength, courage and integrity. In March 2007 the WSU Delta Upsilon Alumni Association established the Jason Taitch Memorial Scholarship. Scholarships will be awarded to incoming WSU freshmen and current undergraduate members of the WSU Delta Upsilon Chapter.

Wisconsin

Noah Annes ‘07 was recognized as Student Leader of the Year in 2006 for his work as a discussion facilitator with the Fraternity Action Coalition, a six-week, one-credit seminar offered to fraternity members to discuss topics like homophobia and sexism in the Greek system. Annes said the program’s effectiveness came from its credibility with fraternity members. He noted that many of his friends were frustrated by stereotypes and stigmas in the Greek system and dropped out. “My approach to that was instead of dropping out and not changing anything, getting more involved and trying to promote change.”

Spinal Tumor Research Funded in Memory of Brian D. Silber, Tufts ‘90

After graduation Brian Silber landed a spot in the executive training program of a top insurance company. He moved to Atlanta for his new job and got engaged. Then in 1993 while out for a run felt an unusual pain in his lower back. Eighteen months later he was diagnosed with a malignant spinal cord tumor. Silber was treated by doctors who were specialists

in other kinds of cancer, not rare spine tumors. In 1996, it became clear that Brian was not going to beat his cancer yet he was determined to give others who suffered the same affliction the fighting chance that he never had. He and his parents laid the ground work for supporting spinal tumor research and after his death in 1996, his family established The Brian D. Silber Memorial Fund at Massachusetts General Hospital. Central Florida Chapter

The Central Florida Chapter helped the Boy Scouts of America with Family Fest in May. The event represents a year of hard work by Florida Boy Scouts and includes the Boy Scouts of America’s philanthropy where 40 scout troops raised more than $400,000 to help protect the youth of America. Each troop organized events to raise money and the Central Florida Chapter helped at each tent. Events ranged from holding an alligator to building a sailboat to working with leather and building a rocket. The highlight of the day was when the brothers were challenged to a fitness competition ( jump roping, sit-ups, and push-ups) by the scouts. The chapter set up the event for the Boys Scouts at a local park and brothers participated in all events, then managed the tear down.

Cornell Chapter

The Cornell Chapter earned a record of six Cornell University awards for 2006-07:

This award reflects the leadership of many brothers and friends. Past undergraduate presidents, Greg Moore ‘06, Bart VanStekelenburg ‘06, and Lou Morga ‘07 were praised for their heroic work of recreating the undergraduate chapter, along with the founding recolonizers, and the 35-odd executive board members who have served throughout the past four years.

Alumni support has been at core of the chapter’s success. Tony Murray, Cornell ‘61 and the entire alumni team served as steady and venerable force though all of the ebbs and flows of our chapter’s redevelopment.

Kansas Chapter

Brian Huntington ‘08 was initiated into Gamma Sigma Alpha, a National Honor Society which recognizes Greek scholars who excel in academics.

Kent State Chapter

The Kent State Chapter established an endowed scholarship in memory of their chapter advisor’s son, Dylan, who passed away at age 15 from complications due to a congenital heart defect. Donna Carlton, Kent State’s assistant director of the center for student involvement, has advised the chapter for the past 16 years. Once the Dylan Fitzgerald Carlton Endowed Scholarship Fund is endowed, members of Delta Upsilon will help Carlton select recipients.

Lafayette Chapter

Biology major Nate Parker ’08 was awarded a fellowship from the American Society for Microbiology to fund research on diseases in freshwater fish. Parker serves his chapter as philanthropy and is involved in all aspects of campus life.

Louisville Chapter

The Louisville Chapter joined with Alpha Omicron Pi to organize a car wash to raise funds for the Boys and Girls Club of Louisville. Jonathan Hasford ‘07 and Human Service Officer Justin Gish ‘11 delivered the $1,000 donation.

The chapter is also working with several alumni in the community to develop a new recruitment plan to help make the Louisville Chapter a strong and permanent part of the University of Louisville.

Massachusetts

Over the summer the Massachusetts Chapter painted parts of their house and refinished the hardwood floors in the chapter room and dining hall. Two alumni donated a new pool table to the house. The chapter organized an alumni banquet at the UMass campus center to honor alumni who have contributed to the chapter in recent years.

Miami Chapter

Alexander Vrable ‘08 initiated into Gamma Sigma Alpha, a National Honor Society which recognizes Greek scholars who excel in academics.

Michigan

James Dean ‘10 was the grand prize winner of the essay category in Outside the Classroom’s 2007 AlcoholEdu Media Contest. Outside The Classroom has developed a suite of science-based prevention programs and tools that are producing dramatic results on more than 450 college and high school campuses nationwide. The company’s flagship product, AlcoholEdu®, has set the standard for delivering alcohol prevention education to entire student groups, the key to changing a campus drinking culture, easily and cost effectively. Delta Upsilon began providing AlcoholEdu® in 2000.

Michigan Tech Chapter

On September 15, the Michigan Tech Chapter participated in the University’s annual Parade of Nations. Brothers walked through the 1.5 mile parade route as five brothers proudly displayed our flags and banner. On October 20, the chapter raked lawns and donated the money they raised to Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly, a charity organization that helps the elderly. In addition to the annual leaf rake, they also delivered wood for Make a Difference day, an event hosted by the university. Early in the fall semester the chapter helped with a fundraiser aiding Alpha Xi Zeta sorority sisters whose house was damaged by a fire.

Ohio State

The Ohio State Chapter is rebuilding with a focus on recruitment and improving the Greek community by breaking stereotypes and setting high standards.

Lafayette Chapter

Biology major Nate Parker ’08 was awarded one of 30 fellowships from the American Society for Microbiology. The fellowship provides a stipend for 10 weeks of research on columnaris disease in freshwater fish. After graduation Parker plans to join the Peace Corps or a health-related NGO. He spent the spring semester studying malaria prevention in Kenya and plans to pursue a dual M.D./master’s of public health degree and work on pediatric medicine and public health.

Pennsylvania Chapter

Over the summer, brothers worked to improve the appearance of the chapter house by painting railings and windows, as well as completely repainting the common room. Brother Bruk Mensa ‘08 organized the improvements and hung new DU letters on the house.

Rochester Chapter

The Rochester Chapter won the University’s highest honor for Fraternities and Sororities, The Strategic Planning Award. The award states, “Delta Upsilon’s accomplishments in meeting the standards and the intent of the Expectations for Excellence are impressive and numerous. Congratulations, Delta Upsilon. You excelled in all five areas of the Expectations for Excellence. We are impressed with your accomplishments and look forward to your continued contributions to the College, to Fraternity and Sorority life, and to the Rochester community.”

The chapter held their annual “Homeless for the Homeless Event” raising more than $1,000 for Habitat for Humanity. In collaboration with the Robbins Medieval Library and the departments of women’s studies, English, and creative writing, the Rochester brothers sponsored the esteemed neo-Arthurian poet Margaret Lloyd to read a sample of her poems and participate in a round-table discussion. The chapter also co-hosted the Foreign Language Film Festival including the French film, “Le Placard.” Another notable academic event held by the chapter was our sponsorship of the Military Student’s Panel. The panel was comprised of three students, one serving in the U.S. Marine Reserve Corps (Erikson Lalone

‘08), another in the Swiss Army (Milo Spirig ‘08) and another in the Israeli Army.

Furthermore, in conjunction with the alumni board, the chapter made an unprecedented financial donation to the University’s student-run literary magazine, LOGOS. The chapter also organized free student tours of the University’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics. Two distinguished brothers Mustafa Coskun ‘01 and Daniel Vickery ‘02 guided the tours.

South Carolina Chapter

Brian G. Klioze ‘09 was initiated into Gamma Sigma Alpha, a National Honor Society which recognizes Greek scholars who excel in academics.

Western Illinois

Alex Degman ‘08 won first place for the 2007 Outstanding News Reporting Award in the state of Illinois for radio broadcasting. Degman is a senior double majoring in broadcasting and journalism. In the two years that he has been a member of the Illinois News Broadcasters Association (INBA) he earned several first place finishes. Degman maintains a GPA above a 3.5, serves the chapter as vice president of recruitment and manages his three part-time jobs.

San Jose

The San Jose Chapter gathered in September after pledging 33 men.

Brother Safi Mojaddidi, ‘10, was selected to play for the Afghanistan National Basketball team where he is currently playing games against U.S. colleges to prepare for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Wilson Kong, ‘11 was recently commended for helping a fellow student evacuate the campus library after a 5.6 earthquake.

OUR FOUNDING PRINCIPLES…JUSTICE

Justice may well be the most difficult principle to adhere to for all of us. We DEMAND justice and rail against injustices; however, when it comes to application we want mercy, forgiveness, and grace for ourselves and “just” punishment for those who have transgressed (in our opinion).

Justice is a trait we all want to claim and indeed we are very resentful if we are accused of being unjust or not fair. But, true justice, as considered by the Founding Fathers of Delta Upsilon, views all persons as under the same umbrella of rules, both those of the law and those of mankind. It is important for each of us, as brothers in Delta Upsilon, to always challenge ourselves and our brothers to determine the dif-ference between right and wrong. This pursuit will help make us all better men.

Justice follows the other three DU principles in that CHARACTER determines the person we are; LIBERAL CULTURE demonstrates our learning about those not exactly like us; FRIENDSHIP is the resulting expansion of the first two; and JUSTICE results because we DO care about others and not just ourselves.

When you combine all four principles of Delta Upsilon, you see the road map for those who aspire to lead, serve, give, teach, and leave the world a better place than we found it. These four principles will lead us on the path to Building Better Men.

In2004,theDeltaUpsilonEducationalFoundationbeganathree-year,fundraisingcampaignto secure the future of its undergraduate leadership programming – primarily at the chapter level.WeknowthatDeltaUpsilonbuildsbettermenthroughleadershipeducationprogramsthat begin when a young man pledges DU. Through the vision and dedication of our alumni and friendstheFoundationcelebratedoursuccessduringtheLeadershipInstituteinSt.Louisbyachievingcommitmentsof$2.4millioninpledgesandgiftstowardANewChapterinLeadership

Campaign.ThisprogramimpactsmoreundergraduateleadersbyincreasedparticipationatconferencesliketheLeadershipInstituteandDUEmergingLeadersprogramthroughindividualmemberscholarshipopportunities.Forty-twoscholarshiprecipientswereinattendanceduringLIasbeneficiariesofANewChapterinLeadershipCampaign.Weexpecttohave75ormorechapterleadershipscholarships in place for future conferences as funding commitments become complete.
