If the name David Suchet doesn’t ring a bell right away, regroup and think Agatha Christie’s famous detective Hercule Poirot. The British actor has portrayed the quirky Belgian detective in all 74 episodes of the Christie canon on PBS Masterpiece Mystery series.

Now he sheds his Belgian detective costumes for the robes and red hat of a Roman Catholic Cardinal in the powerful drama

“the Last Confession”, written by first-time playwright and lawyer Roger Crane.

“The Last Confession” is a tale of intrigue, surrounded by mystery, and wrapped in the panoply and ritual of “great theatre” that is the Catholic Church. Lawyer-playwright Crane sets his play not only, inside the Vatican, but squarely inside the Papal chambers where the disagreements and ambitions of the Princes of the Catholic Church come into sharp

focus as various factions within the powerful governing body, known as the Curia, continually lobby each other and align themselves with various cliques in an effort to choose the next Pope, and even succeeding Popes.

One doesn’t have to be Catholic to understand the core story. One can easily identify with the various characters because the Curia is structured along the same lines as an American business corporation. The

Pope is like the chairman of the Board, and the men who actually write and implement the policy decisions in the day to day running of a worldwide Church are the Pope’s college of cardinals, and in particular, the Curia, the Pope’s inner circle of advisors.

In the production currently on the boards of LA’s Music Center’s Ahmanson Theatre, David Suchet portrays Cardinal Giovanni Benelli, a friend and advisor to the recently crowned caretaker

Pope John Paul I, the successor to the conservative Pope Paul VI. According to program notes by playwright Crane, the powerful conservative Curia now begin their maneuvering campaign to undo the 1962 reforms of John XXXIII and the second Vatican Council.

I must confess, when it comes to films about toys, my all-time favorites are the “Toy Story” trilogy, three movies about the secret life of toys when no one is around to see them in action. Toys like Woody and Buzz light year, the cowboy and space hero figures, captured my fantasy and heart, but then I am from a generation prior to the Lego phenomenon. Designed in Denmark, these little plastic building blocks can create cities and all sorts of stuff in the right hands. The purists follow the

directions while others become like master builders who use the colorful plastic bits and pieces to make their own Lego universe. This concept is part of the plot in Warner Bros. “The Lego Movie,” now available on DVD.

Warner Bros. Producer Dan Lin and writer-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (“Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” and “21 Jump Street”) were able to convince the Lego corporate heads to green light their movie, not an easy thing to do since the Danish corporation is very protective of the Lego image. The result is a sweet, funny and gentle spoof that pokes fun at over-regulation and conformity. The film-makers also assembled a fine and varied voice cast. Lord Business/President Business and The Man Upstairs (Will Farrell) is

the man who wants all things done according to plan. One of his employees, a yellow Lego construction worker named Emmet (Chris Pratt), follows a rigid routine and is happy doing so as he sings the film’s theme song “Everything is Awesome,” which is how my young neighbors Zane (10) and Gracie (8) described their movie experience. I am almost certain my nephew Michael and his son Steven felt the same way since both grew up mastering Lego building skills. In fact, Steven, who couldn’t read at the time, could construct a Lego castle by just looking at the diagrams. Quite a feat.

The ubiquitous Liam Neeson also has a prominent part in the film as the good cop/bad cop. With a spin of his yellow plastic head, he can either be on your

side—or not. There is also a secret weapon that can halt a Lego in its tracks known as Kragle, which made me think of another movie starring Neeson, who uttered the film’s most memorable line—”Release the Krackon!”

What is Kragle? Well, you’ll find out when you and the kids see “The Lego Movie.”

Morgan Freeman’s Lego character Vitruvious looks like a blind biblical figure decked out in white plastic. He hands down a prophecy that a Special One will come and save the Master Builders who want to design a more fanciful place than the evil President Business will permit...

Things get complicated for the very simple, yellow fellow Emmet when he meets a cool motorcycle riding gal named

Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) who mistakes him for “The Special.” He falls for her when she tosses her black plastic hair around which is funny since all the Lego folk move and act just like a stiff plastic actual Lego figure.

This movie wasn’t my personal cup of tea, but if you are a Lego fan and know all about Lego construction you will love “The Lego Movie” to pieces...and there are millions and millions of bright colorful plastic pieces in this homage to a Lego world. Rated PG for mild action and rude humor.

Also out on DVD, the animated Academy Award nominee “Ernest & Celeste,” a delightful tale about a little artist mouse who befriends a grumpy bear named Bernard. Rated PG.

‘The Lego Movie’ Now on DVD FIFA World Cup Wrap-Up

in Machiavellian fashion on the selection process of future Popes. If this storyline sounds familiar, it’s because we also run our US Congress much the same way, except there is more compromise in Rome than in Washington DC.

When Pope John I dies thirty-three days into his reign, the paparazzi and the Italian media begin a campaign suggesting that his death is a Vatican mystery that needs more transparency. It is common knowledge the Mafia-connected Vatican banking advisors have been defending charges that the bank has been involved in inappropriate financial practices. Against this backdrop, Cardinal Benelli (a commanding David Suchet)

takes over the investigation and delves into resolving the issues while at the same time, promoting his own candidacy to become Pope. As G.K. Chesterton said, “power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

The cast of nineteen men (how apropos) and one woman, Sheila Ferris, who plays Sister Vicenza, are uniformly outstanding in their portrayals as Princes of the Church. It’s an outstanding ensemble cast of actors that literally inhabit the skin and minds of the characters they portray. Playwright Crane is very careful in laying out his story and plotline, as the play is based on actual events and actual individuals; albeit with lot of literary license

thrown into the mix.“The Last Confession” is

a visual feast for the eyes as well as the ears. The blood-red robes of the cardinals set against the papal chambers and the gleaming white robes of the Pope make for great theatre. There are twenty in this splendid cast, but there are always standouts and they include: Nigel Bennett as Cardinal Villot; Kevin Colson as Cardinal Baggio; Philip Craig as the Confessor to Cardinal Benelli; Donald Douglas as Pope Paul VI; Roy Lewis as Cardinal Bernadin; Bernard Lloyd as Cardinal Ottaviani; Stuart Milligan as Bishop Marcinkus of the United States; Richard O’Callaghan as Cardinal Albino who becomes Pope John I; John O’May as Cardinal Felici; and George Spartels as Cardinal Lorscheider. Like leaders of any worldwide body, these people

are formidable, fascinating, and always interesting to watch.

Director Jonathan Church, has the technical arsenal of the Ahmanson Theatre to command and he utilizes its full potential with a visually stunning stage design by William Dudley along with the clever lighting plot of designer Peter Mumford who gives us the cathedral-like shafts of light and flickering candles that renders the stage in the action and feel of its 1000 years of ritual and pageantry. The costumes designed by Fotini Dimou, are both familiar and spot-on.

“The Last Confession” is an enthralling piece of great theatre that’s not to be missed. The Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, is the only venue in the United States to present the production as it continues on its world tour. The production runs through July 6, 2014.

Genre-busting outfit NRBQ, legendary ‘70s hit-makers The Babys and singer-songwriter Tom Freund continue to move forward in fine fashion as evidenced by the artists’ latest discs.

Tell me more: Whether playing power-pop, rock, swing, jazz or Tin Pan Alley, the members of NRBQ offer non-stop thrills on “Brass Tacks.”

“Greetings From Delaware” is one of many amazing songs on the set, with its blend of Beach Boys harmonies and sharp songwriting. The group can turn on a dime, offering up driving rockabilly on “Fightin’ Back,” a sparse ballad with “It’ll Be Alright,” rousing alt-country on “This Flat Tire,” and experimental jazz via “Places Far Away.” Information: nrbq.com.

Artist: The BabysAlbum: I’ll have Some of That! (Skyrocket entertainment)you might like if you enjoy:

Tell me more: The Babys scored a number of radio hits in the ‘70s, including “Isn’t It Time,” “Head First,” “Midnight Rendezvous,” “Every Time I Think of You” and “Turn and Walk Away.” Forty years after the British band’s formation, original lead guitarist Wally Stocker and drummer Tony Brock have relaunched the band with the release of “I’ll Have Some of That.” The LP features a number of tunes sure to please fans of the band’s high-profile days

including the riff rocking “Sunrise & Goodbyes” and “Grass is Greener,” as well as the pretty power ballad “I See You There.” Information: theBabysOfficial.com.

Artist: Tom FreundAlbum: Two moons (Surf road records)you might like if you enjoy: Gram Parsons, Tom Petty, The Jayhawks

Tell me more: The beautiful songs that define Tom Freund’s new 11-track collection “Two Moons” explore a vast expanse

of lyrical territory. Standout tracks include the introspective country-styled “Angel Eyes,” optimistic folk rocker “Lemme Be Who I Wanna Be,” baroque folk gem “Happy Days Lunch Box” and acoustic guitar- adorned “Heavy Balloon” that is as weighty as its title. As for the musical side of things, Freund (former bassist for alt-country troupe The Silos) proves to be a wonderful singer capable to projecting every detail and shade of his song craft. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. By Carolyn W. GainesSaturday evening, I felt like

Four Handsome, Charming Batmen awaits to take center stage. One Fan named Felix said,”It is almost a quarter after eight, and I got to see ‘The Wayans Brothers’ tonight.” Before the Brothers entered on stage fans were screaming to tunes of four water bottles, 4 brown wooden stools, and one mike centered stage. Keep Reading!! Yes, this Comedy Show is a Hit Show for the Brothers. Ask me how do I know? The Wayans Brothers Duos brought the Moms, Aunties, Sisters, Fathers,

Brothers, Uncles, Cousins, Grand moms, Grand dads, Married Couples, and eight years-old kid of course with her Mom to see the Miracles on stage.

The Superstars Brothers “SOLD OUT” a 3500 seated Venue in the Hot, Windy Desert of Indio, California. They got fans of all ages this is why”Marlon,Damon,Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans “Live Comedy Show” is going to be talk of Indio, Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs, Palm Desert, Hollywood, Los Angeles, around the World in 6 months nightly. I can visualize their comedy dream through my

passion for Blues. The Wayne Brothers like to see the kids appreciate Blues and Comedy. I wrote a book called,”Blues!..Why Blues & Latin?

Their Publicist, Mr. Abraham asked me: What did I think of the Show, and was it great? Mr. Abraham said,”This Show is the First Opening Show to night at Fantasy Springs Casino.” Carolyn said,” The Show was great just keep going, and they will make lots of Money.”

Now, their choices of topics were like a good pot of tender meat, and potatoes all four brothers were zany, hilarious, funny, happy, raw, educational about health, bad foods, sugar diabetes, children, marriage, student loans, aging, cleverness of gay individuals, Beyonce, J-Zee, Baby North, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson & his wife Cooke,Hip-Hop,Rap,Motown Music, and their history-making parents Mr.& Mrs.Howell and Elvira Wayans. Each of their Acts was full of joy, love, high energy, and confidence. A special note you can tell these brother’s practice daily and work hard. These may be the funniest Brothers the World will ever see. They were sheer laughs of brilliance. A Fan name Ismel said, We only get to talk to Wayans Brothers through our hearts, and it is good for you to talk to them.”

The Desert Hot Springs and Indio, California likes to Thank the “Wayans Parents” for creation of their Legendary Sons, Daughters and Comedy throughout the years. First Act, Marlon touched the life of Red Skelton’s characters of (NBC) 1951 Television Comedian the beloved TV Clown. Closing Act, Damon’s style of dressing and comedy is comparable to Julius Henry “Groucho” Max was 1940’s American Comedians. The Wayans Brothers are known as masters of quick wit and considered the best of our modern-Day 21st Century Comedians.

Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, Mr.Brown, Entertainment Director said,”Great Show, flowed slow and smooth everyone attended were in tears. Great to have so much talent under one roof.” Their Host-Comedian Wil was very funny, an original that made us laugh from our guts. Wil Sylvince Opening Act said,”The more you know better you can be prepared in life, so learn, much as you can.” They gave their audience sheer Love!

Finally, I asked the comedians to send a Quote to our youth of Today.

Marlon said,”Never give up your DREAMS...You only fail when you quit trying”.

Third Act: Keene Ivory said,”Don’t confuse what you do with...who you are...Behaviors can always change, and you remain the same.” Damon the show closing act said,”In Life know who’LOVE YOU’ and listen to what they say then, learn who doesn’t and drives everything

they say out of your mind. They don’t mean you any good.” Four Brothers had a vision for a while that turned their strong personal imagination of willingness to rid themselves of excuses. Which they surrender to Open at the Fantasy Resort Casino to make us laugh, cry, scream, clap, learn, listen and happy. The Wayans Brother Live-Show was hotter than Fish Grease in a country skillet just Blues Artists Buddy Guy’s,B.B.King’s, and Roy Gaines’ Bands.

The Wayans Brothers Hot Comedy Show The Superstars “Wayans Brothers” were excellent but Hot & Exciting to Watch.

Dodgers Fans Still Missing Out

Suarez bite Controversy may Force FIFA to Show Some Teeth

Coachella Valley – The MLB’s midway point is right around the corner and due to Time Warner Cable and DirecTV’s greedy discord, 25 percent of the Coachella Valley is still unable to watch the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In January of 2013, the Dodgers organization decided to sell its broadcast rights to Time Warner Cable for a lump sum of $7 billion. In return, Time Warner Cable received the distribution rights for the next 25 years, meaning all Dodger games will air on Time Warner Cable’s SportsNet LA – a network owned by both the Dodgers and Time Warner Cable.

Now, just how DirecTV held out on Time Warner Sports Net – Time Warner Cable’s all-Southern California (but mostly Lakers) channel that DirecTV eventually bought – Time Warner Cable is, once again, at a stalemate with the satellite company that prides itself on offering the best sports packages.

A total population of 346,518 in the Coachella Valley means roughly 90,000 Coachella Valley residents with DirecTV are unable to hear “It’s time for Dodger’s baseball” – the famous phrase the Dodgers’ 86-year old hall-of-fame broadcaster, Vin Scully, proudly announces before each game.

Other than missing out on the special idiosyncrasies that occur every Dodgers game, non-Time Warner Cable Subscribers have also missed some memorable

games in 2014 that will go down in Dodger’s history.

On May 25, Josh Beckett pitched his first, and the 21st no-hitter in Dodger’s history. Just weeks later, on June 18, Clayton Kershaw – the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner – pitched his first, and the 22nd no-hitter in club history.

“I feel robbed of an opportunity to witness history,” lifetime Dodgers’ fan and DirecTV subscriber Emmanuel Gutierrez said. “I feel robbed of a chance to watch a team, which I have loved and followed my whole life, because of these cable contract negotiations.”

The inability to come to an agreement revolves around greed. DirecTV does not want to pay Time Warner Cable’s asking price; however, to justify the $7 billion paid to the Dodgers; Time Warner Cable is offering SportsNet LA at a rip-off price.

“Now, if I want to watch the Dodgers game, I have to jump through a bunch of hoops,” the Coachella Valley resident, and lifelong Dodgers fan, Gutierrez said. “I have to find a friend, or a bar that has the channel, so it’s definitely a lot harder to watch a game.”

DirecTV is hoping Time Warner Cable will drop its asking price, and Time Warner Cable is waiting for DirecTV to just give in and pay for the network. Either way, DirecTV subscribers who are Dodgers fans will pay a price.

Currently, DirecTV patrons are without Dodgers games and have been since the beginning of the 2014 season. If the two parties ever do come to an agreement, DirecTV will likely raise its rates to account for the amount of money SportsNet LA would cost the satellite TV provider.

Previously, Fox Sports Net had been carrying the Dodgers, and KCAL broadcasted 50 games per season. This year’s change marked the first time since 1958, when the Dodgers moved to LA, that loyal Dodgers’ fans in Southern California could not watch their adored team on local broadcast television –, and the fans are not happy.

“I love the Dodgers, but I don’t think just the Dodgers channel (would get me to switch providers); I would not want to pay extra for five months out of the

year to watch the Dodgers regular season,” said David Arredondo, a DirecTV subscriber in the Coachella Valley. “I wouldn’t want to leave the Sports packages, and the good customer service that DirecTV offers.”

The exclusive Dodgers channel alone will not lure most of DirecTV’s customers to jump to Time Warner Cable. Furthermore, DirecTV makes switching as hard as possible by charging a fee if customers decide to cancel their membership.

There have been rumors of DirecTV walking away from negotiations in 2014, and that the satellite television provider would not start negotiations up until the end of the season.

On June 23, DirecTV released a statement regarding the rumor.

“Nothing could be further

from the truth. In fact, DirecTV wants to resolve this situation on behalf of all the most loyal Dodger fans who should never have had Time Warner Cable come between them and their favorite team in the first place.”

The statement seems a bit impulsive – and more rallyist and divisive than diplomatic – but DirecTV is likely working out a deal, exactly like they did a few year’s ago with Time Warner Sports Net. Dodgers fans only hope the agreement comes sooner rather than later.

Dodger’s fans without SportsNet LA can sign a petition on ineedmydodgers.com, which will then be emailed to the cable provider to express the high demand for the Dodgers channel.

By Desert Star StaffHe’s one of the biggest

stars of the World Cup, up there with Messi and Neymar,

but Uruguay’s Luis Suarez may not be long for Brazil. With his latest transgression, the striker may have bit off more than he

can chew.“We are awaiting the official

match reports and will gather all the necessary elements in order

to evaluate the matter,” football’s world governing body FIFA said on Tuesday after video footage appeared to showed Suarez

sink his not inconsiderable choppers into Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini’s shoulder. That’s FIFA-speak for: “We’ve got an embarrassing situation on our hands and we’re not sure what to do about it.”

Chiellini pulled down his jersey to reveal what looked like bite marks after the incident in the 79th minute, but Mexican referee Marco Antonio Rodriguez Moreno took no action. Now FIFA must decide whether to suspend Suarez on the basis of video evidence.

“It was ridiculous not to send Suarez off,” Chiellini said in a post-match TV interview. “It is clear-cut and then there was the obvious dive afterwards, because he knew very well that he did something that he shouldn’t have done.”

It may not help the striker’s case that this is not the first time he’s fallen afoul of the rules - and normal human dietary habits. Suarez’s teeth are known recidivists.
