Spiritual Gun-Slingers
Back in the days of the old west there were always rustlers seeking to steal your herd, or carpet baggers seeking to steal your land. So many landowners would go hire some gun-slingers. These were men whose services you could usually purchase to “handle your problems.” Often they would “shoot first and ask questions later.” They had to be light-ning quick on the draw when faced with a problem. But they generally got the job done.
I believe there is a sense in which Christians need to be “spiritual gun-slingers.” God has called for His people to shoot first when there is a problem. (Do I have your interest?!)
Sometimes the “problem” is one we have with someone who has sinned. This sin has been directed against us – so now, what do you do? I have heard words to the effect, “I’ll forgive that person when they come to me crawling on their belly and begging for my forgiveness!” YIKES! Now is this what God wants us to do? Of course not. God wants us to “shoot first” (WHAT!!). By this I mean, God wants us to take the initiative and go to them. Jesus said, “If your brother sins, GO and reprove him in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother,” Matthew 18:15. Yes, they sinned. But God has called for you/me to “make the first move”!
Yet sometimes we are the problem. We didn’t intend to do/say something that offended someone else. We may even think, “It was no big deal. They just need to get over it!” But that’s not what Jesus says. He tells us that we need to “shoot first”! For this “problem” could become an issue which might even come between us and God. So Jesus says, “If you are presenting your offering before the altar, and there remember your brother has something against you, leave your offering before the altar, and GO your way; first be reconciled to your brother, then come and present your offering,” Matthew 5:23-24.
Therefore, whether we are the offended or the offender, Jesus tells us that we
need to be the one to act/shoot first. Our relationship with others can either help or hurt our relationship to God. Let us then be the “fastest gun in the west” (or at least in Beaumont), and seek to reconcile ourselves to others (no matter who
sinned first) so that we may not harm our relationship with God!

We are fast approaching the start of Daylight Savings Time
(DST). Daylight Savings Time will begin on March 8th at 2:00 am
and end on November 1st. Benjamin Franklin first suggested DST
in 1784, but modern DST was not proposed until 1895 by George
Vernon Hudson. Daylight Savings Time has also been credited to
an English builder, William Willett in 1905, when he presented the idea to set the clocks for-
ward during the summer months. By doing this during the spring and summer, we get to enjoy
longer evening daylight hours. Most people are more active during the evening hours than the
morning. The reality of having more daylight (later in the day) reinforces the illusion that we
have more time each day. Whether you like it or not, we will continue to “spring forward and
fall back” each Spring and Fall. The illusion of longer days is what appeals to most of us. God
chose to give us 24 hours in each day no matter what time of the year it is. We must use our
time wisely and continue doing God’s will. “And do this, understanding the present time: The
hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now
than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the
deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.” Romans 13:11-12
Since we have no idea how many days we have, let us not waste any time we have, instead of
looking for more time, let’s just start doing more with what we already have. Brad Mansfield

God’s Child
She searches the crowd for him.
Is he listening? Is he behaving
himself? It was such a short time
ago when she would complain,
“I did not hear a word the
preacher spoke,” but now her thoughts are
distracted for another reason. Now her children
are not beside her - they are “too big.” Her
arms ache for a child squirming there all during
church. She stands to sing and her body sways
as if rocking a child. Where did the years go?
Was it worth all those frustrating Sunday
mornings? Sunday nights? Wednesday nights?
Oh, there he is; look at him … he’s reading his
Bible. His eyes are attentive. She feels so much
joy. Look! There’s my child. No, he’s God’s
child! H to H
