Langdon House of Girl's High School won the house championship collecting 634 points at the Inter House track and field meet held at the Bogambara Grounds under the patronage of B.A. Abeyratne, Director of Sports and Physical Education of the Ministry of Education on Wednesday, the 6th of February 2013. had an outright win over Lumbini

Maha Vidyalaya .They also got the better of

St.Joseph’s, Royal, Trini-ty, St.Sebastians and Nalanda on first innings.

This talented side has gone through many tough situations

on the field but every time they

have been able to meet their challenges successfully and to

stay above some of the more fancied

teams in the tournament.

The Gregory's Road School has produced several outstanding crick-eters who have represented Sri Lanka with distinction.The legend-ary Aravinda de Silva who was instrumental in Sri Lanka's triumph in the 1996 Cricket World Cup where his unbeaten century and three wickets earned him the Man of the Match award in the final against Australia. Hashan Tilleker-atne also another proud product who also captained Sri Lanka in test cricket from 2003 - 2004.

Paceman Kosala Kuruppuarach-chi , who claimed a five wicket haul (5 for 41) in his test debut against Pakistan at CCC Grounds in 1986, Wicketkeeper Pubudu Dassanayake , Paceman Pulasthi Gunaratne also represented Sri Lanka in test crick-et.Naveed Nawaz who played for the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team is an experi-enced under 19 Sri Lanka coach today.

Sanjeewa Silva , Ranga de Silva , Batheesha de Silva,Yasas Tilleker-atne, Sanjeewa Warusamanne and K.Siriparan were some of the best school cricketers at DSS in the past.

The team is led by third year player Duleeka Brahmanage who is in good form.He cracked around

712 runs last season. This season the stylish right hand batsman made his best score of 116 against Nalan-da totaling 300 runs .

All rounder Supun Madusanka is the Vice Captain of the side who topped the 300 run-mark this sea-son from nine outings.He made his highest individual score of 75 runs against Isipatana.In bowling, he has claimed 23 wickets so far with a best effort of four wickets for 32 against Isipatana. Left arm seamer Binura Fernando is the danger man of the side who took a match bag of 11 wickets (8 for 24 and 3 for 39) against Nalanda recently.He has 50 wickets to his credit

They have an experienced open-ing pair in Kanishka Prashan and Uvin Bandara .Prashan scored 246 runs last year with a top score of 49 runs against Royal College,Colombo.Bandara has given his support to the team while scoring a total of 221 runs for the season.

The new ball will be shared between Suchintha Lakshan, Binura Fernando and Duleeka Brahamanage. The spin attack will comprise of Supun Madu-sanka, Shifran Mutaliph, Harith Maduwantha, Ravin de Silva, Kanish-ka Prashan and Nimesh Weragala.

The rest of the players in the DSS under 19 first XI squad are Aqueel Inham, Vishal Amugoda , Ravin de Silva, Nadeesha Danushika, Udesh Senanayake, Udith Nanayakkara, Thimi-la Vidyasekara and Harith Maduwan-tha.

The School is being coached by former Dharmapala c r i c k e t e r P a s a n Wanasinghe who has build up a strong team this year.

Iron lady Dhammika Harischandra of the Sri Lanka Air Force re-wrote the records when she established three women's national weightlifting records at the Senior weightlifting nationals organised by the Sri Lanka Weight-lifting Federation and concluded at the Royal College Hall, Polonnaruwa.

She snatched 76 kilogrammes and clean and jerked 91 kilogrammes which accumulated to 167 kilogrammes and all three eclipsed the previous records which were held by her in the 75 kilogramme body weight category.

Dewmith Weera-sena of Lyceum I n t e r n a t i o n a l School Nugegoda emerged Champion in the under 10 age group at the Junior National Table Ten-nis Championship held recently, at the Jagath Rajapaksha I n t e r n a t i o n a l Indoor Stadium in Peradeniya.

The champion-ship was organized and conducted by the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka where over 600 players from all over the Island participated.

Dewmith a product of Lyceum International School Nugegoda is the number one ranking player of Sri Lanka in the under 10 age group. He also won the All Island championship in the year 2012.

Samanala House emerged champions by obtaining 473 points at the annual inter-house sports-meet of the Vidulipura Maha Vidyalaya, Nor-ton Bridge in the Hat-ton educational zone at the school ground recently.

Wimala House which collected 400 points was the runner up and Viduli House which gained 392 points was placed third.

German fourth seed Tommy Haas advanced to the final of the $547,000 ATP SAP Open with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over US second seed John Isner on Saturday.

Haas, who at 34 surren-dered seven years to his rival, fired eight aces and connect-ed on 75 percent of his first serves while Isner, known for his big serves, had nine aces but connected on only 59 percent of his first serves. aFP
