VISCOPLEX® and VISCOBASE® products from the DRIVON™ technology toolbox are true design elements for fuel efficiency. DRIVON™ products provide an expanded performance envelope that enables superior viscometrics and is also able to improve the dispersion of oxidation products, as well as wet clutch and steel/steel tribology.

FUEL EFFICIENCY FROM COMB POLYMERS

Based on Evonik’s poly alkylmethacrylate, or PAMA technology, comb polymers offer a unique polymer architecture for the lubricant industry. The flexibility of the polar backbone in the comb polymer is designed to allow the large molecules to “collapse” at low temperatures. As temperatures increase, the backbone swells, allowing the expansion of the molecule. This results in a desired thickening effect, while maintaining the other positive attributes gained from use of PAMA technology.

As part of Evonik’s DRIVON™ technology platform, comb polymers improve the viscosity performance of powertrain lubricants over a wide temperature range. In addition, comb polymers work within the components of a powertrain to enhance durability and control viscosity, even under severe

mechanical shearing of the lubricant. Comb polymers have even been shown to reduce fuel consumption by 3-4 percent across the powertrain, helping automotive manufacturers meet challenging requirements.

DRIVON™ TECHNOLOGY FOR TRANSMISSION FLUIDS

Lubricant marketers are already taking advantage of the excellent viscometrics and shear stability DRIVON™ technology provides to transmission fluids, in AT, DCT and CVT systems.

DRIVON™ technology enables development of very high viscosity index fluids. The additives used ensure a reduction in the viscosity losses at low temperatures without compromising the necessary fluid film strength at peak temperatures, delivering improved fuel efficiency performance.

Starting from tribological studies and bench screening, through rig tests to using best-in-class full vehicle test facilities, Evonik assesses oils to ensure performance is demonstrated in relevant vehicle applications.

Vehicle fuel efficiency performance is verified by test results that meet national and regional standards. Using chassis dynamometer emissions and fuel efficiency tests conforming to regulated test cycles such as NEDC, FTP75, WLTC and JC08, Evonik has shared with customers the efficiency gains achievable from DRIVON™ technology.
