AHIMA 201 3 ANNUAL REPORT | 3

Executive SummaryLast year was a time of great successes and new challenges. AHIMA published its first-ever three-year Strategic Plan, which took into consideration the projected future of the profession and welcomed feedback from our entire membership base. The Plan outlines general areas AHIMA will focus on in the coming years to advance the Health Information Management (HIM) profession, including Informatics, Leadership, Information Governance, Innovation, and Public Good.

Throughout the year, AHIMA introduced innovative new products, services, and resources including our first informatics textbook, new ICD-10 resources, and several mobile applications. We moved our online communities of practice to the new Engage platform, and for the first time allowed members of the public to join the conversation in select communities. We held our first virtual career fair to help connect companies with potential job candidates, and received the US Department of Labor’s certification for our new apprenticeship program. AHIMA and the AHIMA Foundation partnered to advance the HIM workforce in the US and even received support from the Department of Commerce to help standardize the profession worldwide.

In parallel to this success, AHIMA experienced the great loss of our 2013 President/Chair, Kathleen A. Frawley. The entire HIM community mourned her passing after 40 years of service to the Association, the profession, and the education of future HIM leaders. Kathleen loved history (especially AHIMA’s history) and was thrilled to serve as president during our 85th anniversary. Kathleen’s hard work and dedication to lifelong learning were commemorated fondly at the 85th Annual AHIMA Convention and Exhibit in Atlanta, GA, and the lessons she taught us will be carried long into the future.

In 2014 we will ask you to take AHIMA one step further as we Dream Big, Believe, and Lead. We will continue to advance HIM principles throughout the healthcare continuum and to play a leading role in recognizing trustworthy information as an asset to patient care. We also welcome new colleagues from outside traditional HIM departments to ensure best practices are followed by everyone who manages information in healthcare settings, and provide them with a home under the AHIMA umbrella. We would like to thank the AHIMA Board of Directors for their continued leadership and for guiding our profession through a rapidly changing environment.

We’re looking forward to another great year!

About Us

6 | AHIMA 201 3 ANNUAL REPORT

The year 2013, AHIMA’s 85th anniversary, found the Association moving forward on many fronts. Here’s a recap of AHIMA’s accomplishments, focusing on five key strategic initiatives, as described in the AHIMA Strategic Plan: Informatics, Information Governance, Innovation, Leadership, and Public Good.

InformaticsInformatics is in the spotlight to help us achieve our long-term goal of transforming data into health intelligence. To reach that future, HIM professionals need to master informatics skills, including analyzing and leveraging healthcare data, modeling clinical information, analyzing trends, and revenue cycle management. To that end, we are proud to announce the publication of AHIMA Press’ first informatics title, Introduction to Healthcare Informatics, published in July.

AHIMA has raised awareness of HIM’s leadership role in informatics through involvement in major industry groups, and by continuing to serve as Secretariat for the International Standard Organization’s Technical Committee 215 (ISO/TC 215) on Health Informatics, through which we have worked to promote the use of HIM principles in ISO standards activity. We also continue to assist in standards and interoperability work with HL7.

In addition, we continue to be actively involved in the implementation of SNOMED CT® in partnership with the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO). AHIMA presented at the IHTSDO SNOMED CT® Implementation Showcase and at the International Federation of Health Information Management Association meeting in Montreal.

Information GovernanceInformation governance is one of the most important issues to emerge in recent years, focusing on how healthcare manages its information—the data the industry is producing at an exponential volume every day—so it becomes a trustworthy asset that can be used to improve decision making. AHIMA aims for HIM professionals to be recognized as the healthcare experts in information governance.

In February, AHIMA launched the first Information Integrity Month; it was a great opportunity to start the dialogue on the issue. Since then, we’ve developed a host of resources, including a dedicated web page, articles, and practice briefs.

We have also contributed to awareness of AHIMA expertise in secondary uses of health data through testimony to the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics on future uses of ICD-10 data.

In September, the Health Information Integrity Summit brought together some of the best thinkers in the field on this topic.

And in December, the Journal of AHIMA published a six-part Web series, “Information Governance 101,” exploring information governance programs and the definition of the terms associated with information governance.

DREAM BIG AND BELIEVE

InnovationWhen AHIMA talks about innovation, we’re almost always talking about supporting HIM innovation, including supporting evidence-based research, thought leadership on behalf of the profession, and innovating in areas of expertise like information governance, integrity, and analytics. At the same time, as an association we value continuous improvement and look for best practices and new ways we can bring you the professional development information members need.

This summer, we rolled out not only a redesigned and streamlined version of AHIMA.org, but a new online community platform, Engage. As you look at the new sites, you may notice a different visual approach than we’ve had in the past. With our new, branded colors and visuals, we’re working hard to show that AHIMA is “the trusted source” for our members and the industry.

We’ve also released an exciting project in conjunction with ImplementHIT, a training solution we call Clinical Documentation for ICD-10 by Specialty: Principles and Practice modules.

You can stay in touch with AHIMA through the new AHIMA Advantage mobile app. This app releases new issues of our digital members’ newsletter, AHIMA Advantage, which is available on the iTunes, Google Play, and Amazon app stores. Speaking of apps, last year our ICD-10-PCS flash cards app was a hit. This year we’re developing similar products, including ICD-10-CM flash cards, an ICD-10 countdown calendar, and a pocket glossary app.

In August, AHIMA hosted its first Virtual Career Fair. Free to job seekers, this unique online event offered a way for employers and HIM professionals to meet and learn about one another in a virtual space. This event is one of the many ways AHIMA works to provide additional career development tools.

Finally, in October, AHIMA presented Truman Medical Centers with the second Grace Award to recognize its innovative approach to HIM.

LeadershipOur strategic goal for leadership is to develop HIM leaders across all healthcare sectors. The actions we take to do this go to the heart of our mission: providing relevant education, training, and resources; supporting Reality 2016 and our educators, growing the workforce, and taking proactive approaches to healthcare issues.

The action started early with the release of the HITECH omnibus rule in January, which modified the HIPAA privacy and security regulations. These modifications will have far-reaching implications for every patient’s health records. AHIMA published analysis of the new regulation and hosted live webinars and HITECH Symposiums to take an in-depth look at these new changes as well as discuss the operational impacts and implementation challenges.

With the clock ticking on ICD-10 implementation, AHIMA was there with practical resources and training to help the industry prepare. In April, we brought together industry stakeholders for a successful and information-packed ICD-10 and Computer-Assisted Coding Summit in Baltimore, MD. In addition, AHIMA co-hosted, with other organizations, a coalition of healthcare experts for a briefing on the current state of readiness for implementation in 2014.

Organizations across multiple

industries recognize the need to

control their information, and nowhere

does this make more sense than in

healthcare. Control requires governance.

Governance requires adoption and

ingraining of principles, a framework,

rules, and managed processes.

We believe the time has come for

healthcare to adopt governance

of information. Trust in health

information depends on it.

Survey of the CurrentState of IG in HealthcareIn early 2014, AHIMA launched the first survey of the State of Information Governance in Healthcare with Cohasset Associates.

The survey includes provider and non-providerorganizations across healthcare.

Individuals surveyed include leaders and managers across disciplines in healthcare organizations.

Survey findings will appear in a white paper to be published and released Spring 2014 by AHIMA and Cohasset.

Reduce Time to Competency

ICD-10 training delivered prior to October 1, 2014, will help learners achieve concept and task mastery; however, the true goal is on-the-job competence. Between these two important milestones is time to competency (TTC), and one of the most important training outcomes to measure. Our training methodology of using specific targeting of conditions and diagnoses were designed to maximize training efficiency and can help reduce TTC, ensuring your organization is successful using ICD-10.

8 | AHIMA 201 3 ANNUAL REPORT

AHIMA is also taking a lead role in setting standards globally for HIM education and training. This fall, AHIMA announced participation in the International Trade Administration’s Market Development Cooperator Program, which aims to increase the competitiveness of US organiza-tions by generating exports abroad. The project will financially support AHIMA in developing education infrastructure in target markets, recruiting international students to US colleges, and promoting consistent HIM competencies for health information education worldwide.

To support our HIM educators, AHIMA Foundation’s Council for Excellence in Education drafted revisions to HIM curricula at the associate, baccalaureate, and graduate levels of educa-tion to ensure HIM students are prepared for the changing workforce. AHIMA also launched a second online-only scholarly journal solely to support education in HIM. The new Educational Perspectives in Health Informatics and Information Management journal focuses on teaching, learning, and workforce issues relative to health informatics and information management.

In addition to supporting educators, the AHIMA Foundation supports students through its merit scholarship fund. This year we’ve seen an outpouring of donations to the fund named in honor of AHIMA’s late president, Kathleen A. Frawley. We’ve also seen considerable support for the Health Information Relief Operation Fund, which assists members affected by natural and manmade disasters, such as the tornadoes in Oklahoma earlier this year.

This summer the AHIMA Foundation hosted the Healthcare Forward Summit to focus on training and developing a workforce of veterans to fill gaps in HIM and HIT roles, especially in rural areas. AHIMA also received the US Department of Labor’s certification of our national guidelines for apprenticeship standards. Finally, we are proud to announce that in 2012, the AHIMA Foundation researched and delivered its first Report to Congress, a study on providers not eligible for EHR incentives through the meaningful use program. The final report was published by Health and Human Services.

Public GoodAHIMA’s public good efforts are aimed at empowering consumers to optimize their health through management of their personal health information. Activities include working for functional HIM and HIT standards, building consumer awareness of their rights, and inspiring confidence and trust in the accuracy and security of health information.

One of AHIMA’s most long-standing contributions to consumer education is the website myPHR.com, which is being updated and revised to meet the changing needs of our audience. If you flew on an American Airlines flight this spring, you might have seen the video that aired in April reminding passengers to “Always travel with your personal health information.” This message was courtesy of AHIMA, advising consumers that bringing along critical information about their health could save time, or even their life, in the event of a medical emergency.

You may have also seen the new guidance produced by AHIMA’s Consumer Health Practice Council. To help consumers make smart choices and ask the right questions before downloading health-related applications, AHIMA released Mobile Health Apps 101: A Primer for Consumers.

In October AHIMA announced that it will embark on a campaign to encourage members and state associations to actively support the national Blue Button Initiative to promote access to PHRs. Finally, in December AHIMA took patient empowerment to social media with its first Twitter chat, using the hashtag #PatientPower to discuss why it is important to know what is in your health record, how to access your health information, and patient rights regarding their health record.
