Inspection & Certification Centres
An increasing number of vehicles in developing countries like India are not in a roadworthy state. Poor maintenance and servicing of old in use vehicles not only damages the environment but poses great safety hazard on road.
The MoRTH planning to set up one model I&C centre in each State/ UT with central assistance.
In the 11th Plan, MoRTH sanctioned 10 centres in the state Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Himanchal Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

End of Life Vehicle (ELV) The notification on ELV is still under consideration by the Government
As per study conducted by Mr. B. Mahendra Mohan, Assistant Professor, Department of Management Studies, Periyar Maniammai University, Vallam, Thanjavur. By using proper recycling methods for scrapping the automobiles, India can salvage:
- 1.5 million tons of steel scrap
- 1.8 lakh tons of aluminum scrap
- 75 thousand tons of plastic
- 75 thousand tons of rubber
The Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises has created an Recycling Demonstration Unit (RDU) in Chennai under the auspices of the National Automotive and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRIP). The centre is located at the Global Automotive Research Centre (GARC), Oragadam, Chennai.

National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP)
The NEMMP 2020 is a detailed plan based on an in-depth primary data study conducted jointly by government, automotive industry and academia/research institutes
NEMMP is vital for reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, 80% of which is imported leading to massive foreign exchange deficit
Target for India’s plans to become a global leader in EVs by 2020:
o To put 6-7 million Electric Vehicles (EV) on road by 2020, 4-5 million are expected to be two-wheelers
o Reduce dependence on fossil fuels
o To promote cleaner technologies
NEMMP Cont’d Project Implementation Mechanism:
Both the Government of India and the Automotive industry will jointly invest Rs 23,000 crores to develop the EV eco-system in India
The Government of India will invest close to Rs 14,000 crores over the next 5-6 years
The auto manufacturers will invest close to Rs 8,000 crores
India will deploy support measures that will quicken up the process of consumer acceptance of EVs

• Real World Emission
Real World Emission Pollution across the world is increasing day by day due to Carbon Emission. This is leading to many serious health issues and also lead to increase the average temperature of earth atmosphere. In-spite of CNG run vehicles and increased volumes of BS-IV vehicles, the air quality is still deteriorating
Due to recent incidents in automotive sector which shocked the world, the issue of Real World Emissions and its impact on environment are being discussed at most of the automotive forums
International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) will conduct Real World Emissions testing and compare with Lab Emissions on Driving Cycles for diesel vehicles
Challenges
The World is watching, whether India can built-up world class Transport System which is key for becoming Global Economic power.
To built world class transport system, advance technology have to be developed in-house for Vehicles across all the segments particularly in the field of Emissions & Safety.
