Identify Process Wastes… The Silent Killers:• Unnecessary or
Inappropriate tasks• Waiting or Searching• Poor
Outcomes/Errors• Redundant Activates• Lack of Controls• Monitoring without
reason• Data unreliability• More…

One Improvement Approach: Value Stream Mapping (VSM)
1. Select a process to improve. Develop a business case statement and SMART goals and form team. (DEFINE)
2. Value Stream Map (VSM) the current state. Select a product family, VSM current process, and calculate metrics. (MEASURE)
3. Analyze the current state VSM. Review sources of waste and identify opportunities for improvement.(ANALYZE)
4. Develop a future state vision. Use Lean concepts like visual management, continuous flow, error proofing, and standardized work. (IMPROVE)
5. Implement improvement ideas. Develop an implementation plan and present it to management for approval. (CONTROL)

Benefits of the VSM Process“We See together, we learn together, we grow together”
• Accurate understanding of what actually is occurring in the process and what steps are adding or directly impacting Student Value along with which ones are “wasteful”
• The cross functional team ensures that required inputs/ outputs are received and met
• Increases understanding of cross department processes
• Gets immediate buy-in to improvements
• Reduces the need for extensive training
• Leads to process standardization and performance management
