Driver testing• Educational standards must be sufficient to ensure adequate

comprehension of regulations and instructions relevant to the task involved. A simple literacy and innumeracy test will be applied.

• Maturity of outlook coupled with a responsible attitude must be evident.• Physical fitness must be of a satisfactory standard and have been assessed

by a qualified medical practitioner. The medical examination shall include tests to establish adequate optical and aural standards and be designed to detect any physical disabilities which would detract from a driver’s ability to carry out the driving functions.

• Continued satisfactory physical fitness which shall be assessed by periodic medical examinations.

• Current driving ability with the type of vehicle to which a driver is to be assigned must be proved. An assessment drive must be completed with an approved driver trainer prior to employment.

• Driver training should not be for driving staff only

• Select a driving system that works not one that just trains staff to drive trucks

• Resource your trainer• Ensure that after any accident that you retrain• Salters Use “Smith Systems”

Journey planning• Journey planning incorporates the conduct of formal risk

assessment and definition of the value of proposed journeys to ensure that all identified hazards are managed.

• The prime objective of journey planning is to enhance the safety of all deliveries by identifying the hazards associated with each journey. As a consequence, it may be possible to reduce the driver’s risk exposure by minimizing the number of journeys or maximizing the efficiency of each journey.

• The key component of journey planning is to conduct a journey assessment, the complexity of which is determined by the risk of existing hazards and routes.

• Look at what times you pass schools ,etc these are high risk
