The much anticipated NCDCTA show, Capital Dressage Classic

(CDC), was held June 2-4, 2017 at the Hunt Horse Complex in

Raleigh, NC. Managed by Sandy Donovan with secretarial

duties handled by Equestrian Secretarial Services (Martie Healy),

the CDC took place Friday through Sunday and had

approximately145 horses entered. This show is a longtime

favorite of North Carolinians as well as some surrounding

states. In the somewhat forgiving Raleigh heat, the CDC was the

stage in which horses from Into through Grand Prix, entered at

A and proved their training, with some wonderful scores and

numerous awards. You could say that it was a weekend

showcasing our region's super accomplishments.

First, a huge congratulation goes to rider and trainer

Karyn Becerra, who rode her first Grand Prix on Madame

Butterfly and scored a 63.200 and a 69.200! Becerra has owned

Madame Butterfly for only a few years, bringing her along from

First Level now to Grand Prix – she is a 2003 Hanoverian mare

bred by Heinrich Castens in Germany. What a fantastic

achievement!

comprised of two GA riders, new to Raleigh, and one NC Rider with

the average score of 66.557% – Micha Knol, Ryan Bell and Jennifer

Flowers. Second Place was the Team of Rebecca Vick, Molly Ryan

and Katherine Abrams. Team prizes were provided by M&M Tack

out of Raleigh.

The riders from Encore Sporthorse, had a great show under

the watchful eye of trainer, Susie Wiedman. Two of Susie’s riders

earned their USDF Medals and numerous class victories. Laura

Dickerson earned her USDF Bronze Medal with longtime partner LB

Lena Royal better known to all as Roy. Her mother Mary Carroll

Dickerson writes, “Laura got Roy when she was 12 and Roy was six.

She first showed him in

saddle and then USEF

hunters. She had her first

dressage lesson on him

with Susie Wiedman

when she was 15 and

loved it. They achieved

their 1st and 2nd level

scores, but then Laura's

riding was put on hold

for a year and a half due

to an accident in 2014. It

was a goal of Laura's to

get her bronze on Roy,

and she achieved her last

score the weekend that

she moved to Cincinnati

for an internship in

biomedical engineering.”

Another Bronze

Medal was awarded to Katie Canter riding Minerva, owned by

Susie Wiedman of Encore Sporthorse. Katie said, “My scores

were a 65 on Friday, 64 on Saturday, and 66 on Sunday – all at

Third Level. And I want to say thank you to Susan Wiedman for

all of the lessons and time she has spent coaching and teaching

me. And for making me the rider I am today.”

The NCDCTA Capital Dressage Classic lived up to its

reputation of being a well run and well attended show! With

freshly dragged arenas and lightning fast on-line scoring, this

show continues to offer competitors many additional incentives.

Some very special thanks to a few outstanding individuals

who went above and beyond to offer some special awards.

Thank you to Teena Middleton and Enterprise Farm. Teena is a

huge supporter of the NC AQHA and provides Quarter Horse

High Score awards. Another heartfelt thank you to Angela Mirachi

of Jovee Pony Farm who provided High Score Ribbons and Prizes

for all of the super ponies entered. For all you Pony Riders, Jovee

Pony Farm also offers a Series-End cumulative award as well.

Thank you again to all of the riders and support of our

members that help make this NCDCTA show possible. Remember,

without you and without the entries, these longtime favorite shows

CDC Scholarship Winners

Lendon Gray Dressage4Kids' TEAM Program ClinicTen riders were selected by Lendon to attend her clinic June 10-11, 2017 at Edelweiss Farm in Raleigh.

2017 Dressage Symposiumwith Jeremy Steinburg

The 2017 Dressage Symposium with Jeremy Steinburg took

place May 20th and 21st at the wonderful Justaplain Farm in Siler

City, NC. This is the second symposium that I have been

involved with as the co-chair for Dressage Education, and I

believe it was a huge success. Mary Tompkins and I decided for

this year we wanted someone who was in the current spotlight

for Dressage, in both the National and International scenes. His

recent articles in The Chronicle of the Horse, as well as

Dressage Today have been both wonderfully informative as

well as entertaining, bringing a breath of fresh air to the

industry, while maintaining his foundation and values of

Classical Dressage.

On Saturday, 55 auditing NCDCTA members, and a few new

faces, entered Justaplain Farm to the wonderful smell of fresh

doughnuts and coffee. Jeremy began his day with a Junior rider

and her five year old PRE training level gelding. His classic

approach to the basics, while adding some humor to the

moment, kept auditors on the edge of their seats and improved

the horse within a few minutes. The day ran smoothly, and

attendees saw horses through the FEI levels focusing on

transitions, quickness of the hind legs, and an emphasis of

“non-negotiating…. leg means GO!” Between rides, auditors

took part in raffle of items donated by our Symposium

sponsors, and fellow NCDCTA members. From gift certificates

for PEMF Therapy to coupons for discounted Musical Freestyle

services; handmade bracelets, supplement samples and more,

almost everyone went home with something!

For Sunday's schedule, Mary and I decided that we wanted

to see as many horses as possible work with Jeremy

throughout the day. We mixed things up from the traditional

clinic format of “second rides” for the previous day's pairs, and

invited all new horses and riders to act as demo pairs for each

level. Again, wonderful horses and talented riders from training

level through Grand Prix demonstrated their skills and

continued to work through Jeremy’s exercises. They drilled the

basic skills we often take for granted – transitions, relaxation,

stretching through movements such as Travers – all bettering

the horse’s foundation, allowing them to successfully navigate

the requirements of the levels.

Jeremy Steinburg proved to be a Californian Classical

Inspiration to many of the auditors, and we received wonderful

feedback from those who attended! The clinic was entertaining,

motivational and improved each horse. Justaplain Farm

accommodated parking, wonderful footing and spacious stalls

to our participants, riders and guests.

All and all, the Symposium was a huge success. I cannot

stress enough the huge THANK YOU to all of our wonderful

sponsors who donated funds, as well as those who donated

raffle items. Remember, the NCDCTA Dressage Symposiums

are for YOU, our members! Auditing is always free to current

members, and is only made possible with your support and

attendance.

The phrase, “it takes a village” comes to mind when I think aboutmentors for my equestrian pursuits which span over five decades.It all started in Upper Montclair, NJ, when an eight year old little girlconvinced her father that she really, REALLY, wanted riding lessons.Now, my father and mother were both great athletes. They playedgolf, tennis, skied, but neither one knew which end of a horse tofeed. My father, John Derr, was Director of CBS sports in the 1950sand had been responsible for getting the first CBS TV coverage ofthe Kentucky Derby….but that is where his horseknowledge ended. So, Dad caved in, I gotmy riding lessons and the journeybegan. Being an only child, myparents were always supportivementors for me. My mom died in1991, but even in his advancedyears (he died in 2015 at age 98)my dad would come to mydressage shows and watch. Notthat he was an expert in dressage,like he was in so many sports, buthe knew I was doing what Iloved….and that was good enoughfor him. Today I wear a small pinfrom the Masters Golf Tournamenton my lapel…it’s a way I can feelthat he is still watching me.

I was raised in New Jersey,which is where I got my firstequine. He was a tiny six monthold, basically feral, Shetland coltthat was purchased for $8 at an auction in NJ. We brought“Mickey” to our home in suburban NJ in the back of a stationwagon in a burlap sack. I had him for 26 years. At one point in timewe had a horse, a pony and a goat living in our garage…on .2acres....within eyesight of the Empire State building. There wereabout 10 of us in town who had horses, we rode in the city streetsand on school playgrounds. Many horses who were moreappropriate followed, but Mickey gave me a crash course in howemotionally, financially and laborintensive proper equine managementwould prove to be.

We moved to Pinehurst NC in1972. I thought I had died and goneto heaven. Here I met one of my manymentors, Mel Wyatt. Mel and I went tohigh school together....sometimes,when we didn’t play hookie to go tothe barn. Mel and I remained closefriends and when I moved back to theSandhills after a rewarding career as aParamedic with Guilford County EMS, Ilessoned with her often. Her guidancewas key to my survival and success inthe hunt field, showing the hunters and eventually eventing.

I have always loved Quarter horses, and have owned several.Another important mentor, my wonderful friend Carla Wennberg,told me that AQHA was starting a program for Quarter Horses to

earn AQHA points based on scores above 60% at USDF Dressageshows. I set out to find a QH that could compete in that discipline.My prayers were answered by a tall, dark and handsome appendixQH gelding that I found on the internet. His name was Never BetterMagic. He was two years old and living in Amarillo, Tx. After someinvestigation I purchased him, sight unseen and he was brought toNC by a friend who had been showing in Amarillo.

I had the horse, now I needed help in training him anddeveloping him into the horse I thought he could

be. Initially he was a challenge, entermentor Linda Hoover. She told methat my horse needed a lobotomy,

but since she couldn’t do that shewould teach me how to ridehim…and she did. Turns out hewas a talented jumper, so MelWyatt helped me over fences andwe had some success in thehunters. I evented him a bit but bynow I was getting older. So,dressage, which is the fancy Frenchword for “scared to jump”, began tolook appealing. Over the years Ihave been fortunate to have manytalented dressage instructors: JanLeitschuh, Sidley Paine, RobinBrueckmann, Susie Weidman, JohnZopatti, Kris Hamilton, Candy Allenand Leigh Swanson-“It takes avillage” and each of these gifted

individuals have brought me knowledge and helped to pave myjourney’s road.

But by far the best mentors I have had have been my horsesthemselves. They have no agendas, they are honest to a fault andthey have so, so many lessons to teach me. How to read bodylanguage, the look in an eye, the tilt of an ear. The most minute ofdetails that scream to you what is about to happen…if you listen.I must say that the subconscious awareness of body language that

I learned from the horses, protected memore than once in my dangerous job;how to be present each time I amaround them and how to live in themoment. Wonderful principles to liveby. You can’t fool a horse…they willcall you out each and every time. Ihave always said that horses are mydrug of choice…just as addictive andjust as expensive….but clearly apositive addiction!!

So, in closing I want to thank ALLmy mentors: my generous and lovingparents, my supportive husband, Rick,my talented and patient instructors and

last, but certainly not least, my amazing horses. Now in the autumnof my horse years, it has certainly been an honor and a gift to havehad them in my life.

I was one of the four fortunate juniors to receive a

scholarship to the capital dressage classic in Raleigh.

Getting this scholarship helped me meet new juniors

and their families that I wouldn't necessarily have

meet if I did not receive the scholarship. I received

the scholarship for my horse Joshlyn and was able

to show her in second level for the first time. She gave

me nice tests and I learned more about riding her in the show

ring. I was also

able to show

my other horse

Sandokan. Tiger

helped me

receive my

qualifying

scores for

fourth level and

helped me get a

66% in our first

time out in Prix St George! The other scholars were very

supportive of me and wished me luck on all my rides. I am very

thankful that NCDCTA gives scholarships that help juniors get in

the show ring and the opportunity to meet other juniors who

Capital Classic Dressage show that I

attended as a scholar and took my

Halflinger pony to. I had a great time

showing at

Horse Complex. The show

was extremely well run and

very organized and there was

some great vendors. This show

was a great learning

opportunity, as I got to ride

Training Level with my pony for

the first time. We got over our

fear of warming up around a

lot of other people and horses

and had a great time showing

in the different arenas. My

trainer was sick and couldn’t come, so I and Grace Rea (another

scholar) worked together to take care of the horses, call out tests,

and give each other pointers on our riding. I am so glad I got the

opportunity to ride at this show and I will definitely show with

Minutes of the NCDCTA Executive Board Meeting • June 6, 2017

The NCDCTA Executive Board met in Raleigh with Kathy Gubar, MaryTompkins, Karyn Becerra, Amanda Miller, Laura Pendleton, JaniceAquino, Monica von Windheim, Lorraine Musselman, Karen Mahaffey,Cassidy Sitton and Lynn Kerin. Excused were Jennifer Flowers andAmy Howes. Will Barrus also attended to update us on the newwebsite. Amanda Miller called the meeting to order at 6:15PM.

COMMUNICATIONS REPORT: Cassidy Sitton asked Will Barrusabout sizing availability for ads. Will said we can set it up on the pageswe control, but not pages that are data driven. Cassidy will reviewadvertising pricing from last year and match it up with the newwebsite. She requested Will to develop an advertising rotation systemlike we have on the banner to improve visability. Janice Aquinorequested the rotating system include show sponsors too. Cassidyhas started a Google doc site for storing generic article ideas. We didsome brainstorming on article ideas. One suggestion is to have atrainer spotlight each month with the trainer talking about theirfavorite exercise. Another thought was to feature NCDCTA memberson succeeding goals such as getting their USDF Bronze, Silver andGold medal scores and Freestyle bars, etc.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Lynn Kerin reported themembership numbers since going live with the website are AA- 252,Open- 136 Junior/YR- 73, for a total of 561. There are 323 Horse ofthe Year registrations with 235 paid and 88 volunteer cards.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Lorraine reported we are significantlydown in our funds from the same time last year, and expressedconcern about recovering our figures.

COMPETITION COMMITTEE REPORT: Janice Aquinoreported the Capital Dressage Classic was pretty successful and therewere no complaints. She questioned if we should continue to have athree day show, as having only two rings on Friday costs too much tomaintain. It would be more profitable to have four rings over twodays. Mary Tompkins reported that she talked to a lot of the AdultAmateur riders and they stated the reason for coming on Friday wasto participate in the Sweepstakes class and make money. Janice willanalyze the Show Manager report when she receives it, so the issuewas tabled until then. Janice expressed concern on Board Membershauling the NCDCTA trailer because if they have an accident with it thedriver’s insurance is responsible. She recommends we use acommercial operator that carries a commercial liability policy to avoidany potential liability to our members hauling the trailer.

HOY GALA REPORT: Laura Pendleton reported her site survey ofthe Carolina Country Club for the HOY Gala would be prohibitivelyexpensive and has ruled out that location. She also stated the numberof prizes she had to ship to winners this year almost doubled, whichnegatively impacted her budget. After some discussion Kathy Gubarmade a motion that due to a huge increase in shipping costs forunclaimed prizes at the Horse of the Year Gala, NCDCTA will no longerpay shipping costs. If someone cannot pick your prize up for you, itwill be shipped COD. Lynn Kerin seconded the motion and it passedunanimously.

JUNIOR/YOUNG RIDER REPORT: Monica von Windheimreported there are eight riders for the Lendon Gray Junior/YR clinic,and has four presenters for the event. Mary Tompkins suggested thatwe notify our trainers who have Junior/YR clients about clinics such as

this as their parents and the riders rely on their trainer’srecommendation.

EDUCATION COMMITTEE REPORT: Mary Tompkins reportedeverybody loved Jeremy Steinberg and want to ride with him again!We had 50 auditors on Saturday and over 40 on Sunday. Jenniferobtained Britt Gillis as a sponsor to photograph the riders. The ownerof Justaplainfarm, Caroline (Gert) Stearns was very helpful and thearena was perfect. Mary reported that Jennifer Flowers found somany sponsors for the clinic that we gave door prizes out betweenevery ride! She also announced her resignation from the Board at theend of the year. Additionally, Jennifer Flowers requested the Boardthat she also wants to resign from the Education Committee andbecome a Member at Large to coordinate all the sponsorships forNCDCTA for shows and clinics. With two small children she is unableto be present at Raleigh area meetings, but she can managesponsorships from home. After discussion the Board agreed thatJennifer would be great managing sponsorships and it would bebeneficial that one person would control it as it will eliminate thepossibility of several different people contacting the same sponsor forevents. PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Amanda Miller brought up the proposalfrom Will Barrus regarding NCDCTA Volunteer cards and hepresented his report. He proposed we digitize the volunteer cardprocess to streamline it. When a NCDCTA member volunteers at oneof our NCDCTA recognized schooling or USEF shows the showmanager will provide the name and email address of the volunteer intheir report. He will issue via email a volunteer card with an assignednumber stating the horse’s name, rider name and if a half or full day.Also, for NCDCTA members that still possess paper volunteer cards,you can mail them to Will and he will convert all of them to the digitalformat with an assigned number. Volunteer card numbers will also beable to be transferred to another person for HOY registration asalways. After discussion, Laura Pendleton made a motion that wedigitize our NCDCTA volunteer cards as proposed with the deadlinethat existing paper volunteer cards be returned by November 30, 2017for conversion to the digital file. Kathy Gubar seconded and themotion passed unanimously. Will also asked for clarification on theNCDCTA horse competition rules on renewing horse show dates. Therules currently state that show dates must be renewed by November,and if not renewed by then the date will become open. Afterdiscussion on renewals, Amanda Miller made a motion that once thescores have been received by NCDCTA shows can go ahead andrenew for that date the following year. Mary Tompkins seconded itand it passed unanimously.

NEW BUSINESS: Karen Mahaffey suggested we develop a positivemarketing approach to insure the display of our NCDCTA banners atour recognized schooling and USEF shows. She requested that boardmembers who will be attending a show consult the show manager todisplay the NCDCTA banner.

There being no further business, Amanda Miller adjourned themeeting at 8:45PM. The next meeting is scheduled for June 11 viateleconference.
