Mixed Results at KEEAPR cont. from p1 Topping the auction was the $1 million Malibu Moon3/4-brother to Tapit, who was purchased by a newpartnership comprised of Gainesway, Mt. Brilliant Farmand Robert LaPenta. Niall Brennan consigned the flashychestnut as Hip 55. It was the first seven-figure horseat April since Take Control (A.P. Indy) brought $1.9million here in 2009. The only other horse to eclipse thehalf-million mark was a $770,000 Medaglia d=Oro colt(Hip 61) who sold to LaPenta=s Whitehorse Stable.Eddie Woods consigned. AIt was a thin market, but obviously there was still alot of money for the ones they wanted,@ said Brennan.AThese select sales that have so many scratches, itdoesn=t leave the buyers a lot to choose from. The guyswent after the really good ones, and everyone else kindof held back, probably saying we=ll just keep our moneyfor OBS April, where they=ve got more to choose from.We were very fortunate that the horses performed welland came home good and were sound, and we wereable to get them sold. We had a good day. We only hadeight here and I think we sold seven. We were veryfortunate.@ There were 53 scratches at April before the breezeshow, leaving 17 post-show outs. AThere were adisappointing number of outs, but we at Keenelanddon=t have control of that,@ said Russell. AThe horsesthat went through the ring sold very well, and we werevery pleased with the buyers that were here for whatwas on offer. Especially the number of trainers thatwere here. It shows that this is a good place to have a2-year-old sale, because we can attract the trainers thatwind up training these horses.@ Russell said that Keeneland would prefer a larger Aprilcatalog in the future that could still present a criticalmass of horses to buyers despite outs, but was realisticin his assessment. "Yes, we'd like a much largercatalogue. But the foal crop's down, the number of2-year-olds are down, and for most of the consignorswe are an out-of-state sale,@ he said. AWe make aneffort to recruit internationally and domestically, and sowhen buyers see 53 outs before the gallop show, buyers probably don=t want to come in for it.@ Keeneland was hosting its last April sale over itssynthetic Polytrack, and Russell said it was possible areturn to dirt for 2015 would attract more horses. AWe won=t know until next year, and I haven=t talkedto enough consignors to get an answer to that,@ he said.ABut there are a couple of 2-year-old consignors whohaven=t been here in a couple of years that do like dirt,so maybe they=ll come back. And OBS has a synthetictrack, so maybe it will be an alternative to that.@ All three of the major boutique juvenile sales--April,Fasig-Tipton Florida and Barretts March--had troubleattracting a large number of horses this spring, andRussell conceded the market may not be able tosupport all three. AI would say that all three boutiquesales will be evaluating that between now and this timenext year,@ he said. AThat=s what we=ll do we do it everyyear. I=m sure the other sales companies will do thesame. We=ll sit down with nice people, likeaccountants.@ For complete results of the sale, click here.

Malibu Moon Colt a Group Affair... A trio of high-profile owners will campaign a half-brother to super sire Tapit after joining forces to securethe Keeneland April sale-topping colt by Malibu Moonfor $1 million. Antony Beck, whose Gainesway standsTapit, sitting alongside the farm=s Brian Graves, signedthe ticket on hip 55, as Greg Goodman of Mt. BrilliantFarm sat a row in front and John Panagot, racingmanager for Robert LaPenta, sat a row behind.

AIt=s very seldom thatyou ever get to have ahorse like Tapit on yourfarm, so when a half-brother comes up with alot of ability, you reallywant to try to own thehorse if you can,@ Becksaid. AGreg Goodman is avery close friend of mine,as is Robert LaPenta--who is about the luckiest

owner in the world--so we=re really glad to have themboth as partners.@ Beck, who admitted the seven-figure price tag wasn=tunexpected, said the colt=s breeze in :9 4/5 was a majorselling point. AHe moved over the ground really easily, just skippedalong effortlessly,@ he said. AHe has tremendous action.Hopefully, he=ll win some stakes for us.@ Gainesway partnered with Stonestreet Stables topurchase two yearlings, including a $1.2-million colt byTapit, last September at Keeneland. Panagot, who also signed for a Medaglia d=Oro colt at$770,000 Monday on behalf of LaPenta, was pleasedwith the partnership. AThey obviously are respected in the business, andthey own the hottest stallion in the world right now,@Panagot said of Team Gainesway. AIt was anopportunity we were excited about. They seem like nicepeople and they do a fantastic job.@ Chad Brown will train the chestnut colt. Niall Brennan consigned the youngster on behalf ofhis breeder, Barbara Facchino=s Barouche Stud. AShe=s delighted with the sale,@ Brennan said. AShe isa commercial breeder, obviously she=s in the market, but she=s also sad to see him go. She was in love withhim herself. But she is in the selling business--she raisesthem to sell them. She is delighted with the people whodid get him because he=s going to get every shot to bea good horse and hopefully he will be.@ Of the colt, Brennan said, AI think it=s early days, but Ithink he=s worth every penny. If he is as good as I thinkhe is, he=s worth way more than that. He has to go outand prove it now, but he=s been an unbelievablestudent. He=s so agile and he does things so easily. Heis the kind that have the chance to get to that A level, the top level. He is without question that Saturdayafternoon exciting proposition. That is what peoplewant. And he has got a pedigree to go with it. Thereare yearlings to go for that who have never had tack onthem. This guy has gone out and done it all. He=sproved he=s got the ability, the tools, the mind and thepedigree. I don=t know what else you look for.@ Cont. p5

The American Grades Stakes Committee has elected toreinstate Keeneland’s Transylvania S. Grade III status.

According to policy, the turf test was originallydowngraded to a Listed stake when it was moved to

Keeneland’s polytrack due to rain.

Malibu Moon Colt a Group Affair cont. The seven-figure juvenile is out of Tap Your Heels, who RNA=d for $1.8 million at the 2010 Fasig-TiptonNovember sale while in foal to Elusive Quality. Inaddition to Tapit, he is a half to multiple stakes placedOverandabeauty (Grand Slam). Facchino, who purchased Tap Your Heels for$900,000 in 2002, boards her mares in Kentucky atGerry Dilger=s Dromoland Farm. Sitting with Dilger afterthe sale ended, Facchino admitted it was bittersweet tosell the handsome colt. ABut we have to sell to keep thefarm going,@ she explained. Of the million-dollar colt, she added, AHe=s a free-moving, lovely horse. We areabsolutely pleased with the sale and pleased he=s goingto a good home.@ AI loved him as a yearling,@ Dilger added of the colt.AHe was just a little immature, but the angles were allthere and he was very light on his feet. I loved him andI loved his mind; he=d nearly sleep all day for you if youdidn=t get him up.@ The 18-year-old Tap Your Heels is in foal to ElusiveQuality and she has a Medaglia d=Oro yearling filly.Facchino also has a full-sister to Tapit, Caressor(Pulpit), at stud in Ireland. LaPenta Mines Medaglia Colt for $770,000... Robert LaPenta, who partnered on the sale topper, came back to secure the day=s second-highest-pricedhorse, a striking son of Medaglia d=Oro out of Grade Iwinner Victory Ride (Seeking the Gold) who was

hammered down for $770,000.Eddie Woods consigned the Feb. 3-foaled colt as Hip 61.LaPenta=s racing manager, JohnPanagot, handled the biddingduties out back while on thephone with LaPenta. GeorgeBolton was the directunderbidder. Al Shaqab Racing=sBradley Weisbord was also in onthe action. AHe=s got some speed on thebottom--he=s out of a stakes-winning mare that could fly--andhe=s by a top-class sire inMedaglia--he=s one of the boss=sfavorites,@ said Panagot.

Victory Ride, whose wins included the 2001 GI TestS., is also the dam of GSP Magical Ride (Storm Cat),dam of this year=s good sophomore Ride On Curlin(Curlin). The colt posted the fastest quarter-mile breeze of thesale with a blistering :20 flat move. "He breezed well and he=s from a good consignmentthat takes care of their horses,@ added Panagot. Cont. p6

LaPenta Mines Medaglia Colt for $770,000 cont. Panagot said he=ll be trained by Chad Brown, whostood alongside him during the bidding. LaPenta has been both a prominent seller and buyerat the juvenile sales over the past decade, but didn=toffer any 2-year-olds this spring. AWe=re focusing onracing,@ said Panagot. AThis horse will be our 17th 2-year-old, including the Malibu Moon we partnered on.We're going to run a bunch; we want action. It's anumbers game, so we've got to take our shots.@ Bidding on the Medaglia d=Oro was borderlinelaborious, beginning at $30,000 and then creeping upto the $770,000 mark in unabated $10,000increments. AIt was slooow,@ Panagot smiled. ATrying to handicapit, it seemed like there was live money for quite a whilethere, and it seemed like it took a day to get that ticket.I had the boss on the phone, and that's about wherewe pegged the horse. We think he's one of the betterhorses in the sale, and one of the better horses we'veseen at the sales this year, and we can't wait to getstarted.@ Click here to share this story

Another Big Pinhook for Bradley... Pete Bradley is good for a few pinhooking homerunseach spring, and the Lexington-based bloodstock agent came away with yet another yesterday care of the$770,000 Medaglia d=Oro--Victory Ride colt. Bradleypurchased the youngster last fall at KeenelandSeptember for $140,000 before sending him to EddieWoods in Florida for his early training. AHe had a really nice frame on him,@ Bradley said ofthe colt as a yearling. AHe might have been a littlebackward coming into the sale, but he was always anice horse. He may have just gotten lost in the shuffle, because you usually don=t get to buy a horse like thatfor that kind of price. But if you sit there and putnumbers on nice horses, once in a while you get lucky.@ Bradley=s slightly pained expression told the story ashe monitored the slow bidding process from the rearwalking ring, though with each $10,000 salvo on hisstar pupil, the tension eased. By the time the hammerfell, Bradley was all smiles. AI=ve never had a horse that sold like this that neverhad a bid of more than $10,000,@ he laughed. AHe is anexceptional horse. With the amount of vetting we hadon him, we expected that kind of range. But to watch ahorse go in $10,000s all the way from $30,000 to$770,000, you know everyone is sitting on the lastdollar, they=re not spreading it around. Obviously, hehad the right quality, but I think the way the biddingwent shows how sticky this market is right now. Thereserve was about half of what he ended up bringing--we knew we had a nice horse. I think it=s a function ofthe market. There=s not that sizzle and zing, and thebuyers are playing it cautiously. They have been allyear, really.@ Click here to share this story

Woods Sees Changes Coming... The Keeneland April sale was the third select sale ofthe season, following Barretts March and Fasig-TiptonFlorida. While figures remained strong at Barretts, theFlorida sale suffered significant setbacks with numerousouts and only 47 horses of 157 catalogued finding newhomes. By contrast, the record-setting OBS March sale, with a catalogue of 411 saw 204 sell. AThere is a danger of select sales fading away,@consignor Eddie Woods admitted Sunday. AI don=t thinkit=s going to happen just yet, but there is a danger ofthem fading away. And that is coming from aconsignors point of view.@ Woods acknowledged it was important for consignorsto have different venues at which to sell horses. AWe can=t compete in the same forum with our ownhorses,@ he said. AIt=s hard enough we have to competewith our neighbors for the same dollar with equivalenthorses, but when they are in the same shedrow, it=seven more difficult. You need Barretts, OBS, Keenelandand Fasig-Tipton so we can spot our top-end horses indifferent places. When they are all stuck in the sameshedrow, somebody is getting penalized.@ Still, as OBS continues to churn out impressiveresults, travelling to a select sale becomes a harderdecision.

ASitting back and looking at it from a seller=s point ofview and seeing how it=s gone, we=re having troubletalking people into taking their horses into the selectsales anymore,@ Woods explained. ANow we=re havingguys who couldn=t spell Ocala once upon a time nowwant to sell all their horses in Ocala.@ Woods made the correlation for Keeneland=s nowdefunct July yearling sale. AThe Keeneland July sale went away, it wassupposed to go away on a temporary basis, but wewon=t be around to see it again,@ Woods explained.ABecause it=s turned the September sale into thegreatest yearling sale in the world. And we=re headingthe same way with the Ocala sales, between the Marchand April sales. They are getting bigger and better anda lot of people feel now in Ocala, especially the smallerguys, they don=t have to travel anymore to sell theirproduct.@ Click here to share this story

Consignor Niall Brennan AI think everybody needs to look at the process thatwe have right now in the 2-year-old sales--salescompanies and consignors alike. We can=t keep doingthis over and over again, breezing these horses so fast.If we want to change, we can=t keep doing the samething. That=s the definition of madness. We need adifferent process. The sales companies have to step upand take a little responsibility in that process, to changethings. At Keeneland, there is too much time betweenthe sale and the breeze show. I think that I would liketo see them change that. But it is a great place to sell. It=s a sale that has produced so many good horses. Ithink it=s because consignors have brought good horseshere that they wanted to give more time. That=s notgoing to change. But there are too many select sales, between Barretts, Fasig Tipton and Keeneland they areall struggling to catalogue 140 horses and it=s just notgoing to happen. You can=t get the buyers there. Butthere is the need for the select atmosphere. OBS Marchis two days, it=s a great catalogue and people come in.The other sales companies are competing with that Ithink the April timing is still very good. I think it=s timeto clock back, not to use a pun, but we need to try toget away from this emphasis on speed as consignors.Becasue we need sounder horses and we need topresent a full catalogue and feel confident that there=snot going to be a huge attrition rate. I think we need tochange the process. I think the consignors need to lookat that, but I think the sales companies also need tolook at it and take some responsibility in helping withthat process.

All racing fans on both sides of the Atlantic lookforward to Derby time, but for the pedigree pundit thiscan be a tricky few weeks. Often it=s far from easy totell which of today=s GI Kentucky Derby contendershave stout enough bloodlines for the all-important jumpfrom nine to 10 furlongs. In England it is usually thesame old story when the connections of the 2,000Guineas winner decide to chance their colt=s staminaover an extra half mile at Epsom. It therefore makes a welcome change to come acrossa leading Kentucky Derby contender whose pedigreeand demeanor suggest strongly that the extra furlong atChurchill Downs will be a definite plus, rather than aminus. That colt, of course, is Wicked Strong, who wasputting in all his best work in the closing stages of theGI TwinSpires.com Wood Memorial. This confidence is based on the simple fact thatWicked Strong=s sire Hard Spun and broodmare sireCharismatic both performed extremely well on DerbyDay. Hard Spun was the only one to make a race of itwith Street Sense in the 2007 Kentucky Derby, and hecould be forgiven for weakening a little in the finaleighth, having set early fractions of :22.96 and :46.26.Cont. p10

Andrew Caulfield cont. Later, in a re-jig of the Kentucky Derby form, HardSpun made much of the running to finish second toCurlin in the GI Breeders= Cup Classic, with StreetSense back in fourth on that occasion. Charismatic, forhis part, finished strongest of all to defeat Menifee andCat Thief in the 1999 Derby. Further confidence in Wicked Strong=s stamina isadded by the records of his four great-grandsires.Northern Dancer wore the roses after the 1964 Derby;Turkoman earned the champion older horse title in1986 largely through his efforts over a mile and a

quarter; Charismatic=s sireSummer Squall wasrunner-up to Unbridled inthe Derby before gaininghis revenge in thePreakness; and WithApproval, the sire ofWicked Strong=s seconddam Classic Approval, won Canada=s Breeders=S. over a mile and a half

and was beaten only half a length in the GI Breeders=Cup Turf. The name of Wicked=s Strong=s grandsire Danzig isoften associated more with speed than stamina, but thetruth is that his rich legacy has been wonderfullyvaried. Although the nearest he came to siring aKentucky Derby winner were the seconds by Stephan=sOdyssey and Hard Spun, he sired winners of the GI Preakness S. and the GI Belmont S. If Hard Spunwere to sire a Kentucky Derby winner, he wouldn=t bethe first son of Danzig to do so, as Polish Navy wasresponsible for the 1993 winner Sea Hero, and we=vealso seen two sons of Danzig sire winners of the Derbyat Epsom.

Hard Spun proved himself one of Danzig=s toughersons with a 10-race sophomore career which saw himtackle just about every distance from seven furlongs toa mile and a half. It was fitting that he tackled all threelegs of the Triple Crown as his pedigree could bedescribed as classic.

His third dam Luiana produced Little Current, winnerof the Preakness and Belmont in 1974, and Luiana wasalso a half-sister to that exceptional brother-and-sisterteam of Chateaugay (Kentucky Derby and Belmont S.)and Primonetta (champion older female of 1962 andBroodmare of the Year in 1978). While Hard Spun pulled too hard to give himself achance of lasting a mile and a half in the Belmont, hegalloped First Defence into submission in the GI King=sBishop S. over seven furlongs. He also reversedKentucky Derby form with Street Sense in the GII Kentucky Cup Classic over a furlong less. Hard Spun didn=t only follow in Street Sense=sfootsteps in the Kentucky Derby. He also followed himto Darley=s stallion complex and has now taken thesame journey to Darley=s Japanese branch which StreetSense took a year earlier. Street Sense did well enoughduring 2013, with seven graded stakes winners, to earna return ticket. There must be a good chance that HardSpun will follow suit, as he has also enjoyed gradedsuccess this year with Reload (GIII Canadian Turf S.over a mile). It mustn=t be forgotten that Hard Spun was one ofthose young stallions who found support ebbing awayin his first few years. Having attracted 181 mares in hisfirst season, for 143 live foals, he had 105 foals from147 mares in his second and 96 from 137 mares in histhird crop, which includes Wicked Strong. His fourthcrop is a little bigger, at 104 live foals, and there are123 yearlings in his fifth. His move to Japan may have been precipitated partlyby 2013 results which didn=t compare to his impressiveefforts in 2012, when he had only two crops on thetrack. His total of stakes winners in 2012 stood at animpressive 16, with two of the 16 scoring at the toplevel. Questing led the way with her Grade I victories inthe CCA Oaks and the Alabama S., which establishedshe stayed pretty well, and Zo Impressive played herpart by winning the GI Mother Goose S., prior tofinishing second to Questing in the CCA Oaks. In contrast, the stakes winner tally fell to seven in2013, when Hard Spun had only one graded winner inNorth America (the GISP filly Hard Not To Like). However, he also had a very speedy English-trained sonin Moviesta (G2 King George S.). To get back to Wicked Strong, he has the probablyunwanted distinction of being the first winner of anygreat note out of a daughter of Charismatic. Althoughthe son of Summer Squall started his stallion career at afee of $35,000 in 2000, he was on his way to Japanby the end of 2003. His only important winner fromfour American crops was Sun King, who repeatedly ranwell in Grade I contests without quite managing to winone. Wicked Strong=s dam Moyne Abbey gained her onlywin in 12 attempts on turf. She is a half-sister toseveral above-average performers, the most successfulbeing the smart turf miler Gulch Approval. WickedStrong=s third dam, the dual GIII winner Classic Value,is also the second dam of Student Council, winner ofthe GI Pacific Classic and GI Pimlico Special, and thisfemale line also produced that excellent but ill-starredfilly Three Ring. RODMAN J. LAW:"Three Kinds of Lies: Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics." As we are too familiar (arguments about theAffordable Care Act being a case in point), theinclination to influence public discourse by the selectiveuse (or misuse) of statistics is tempting. Joe Drape'scolumn in last Friday's New York Times regardingKeeneland's decision to move to dirt ("From a SyntheticTrack to Dirt, and a Higher Risk for Horses"), is a clearexample of succumbing to that temptation. After the eye-catching headline, I read his column andquickly sensed something wrong with his analysis.Having taken a fair number of economic and statisticscourses way back when, I spent Saturday morninglooking at The Jockey Club statistics cited by Mr. Drape(rather than handicapping the Wood and the SantaAnita Derby). Now, as Mr. Drape says in his column,"let's do the math," using the numbers from TheJockey Club report.

The first inaccuracies that I noted were in his ledeand second paragraphs; he cites a fatality rate atKeeneland of 0.33 per 1,000 starts. Problem numberone is that also includes turf starts. The purelysynthetic figure is actually 0.43 per thousand. In his second paragraph, he then takes what seemsto be a statistical outlier at Keeneland for last year (thelast five years were 0.85, 0.93, 1.27. 1.39 and 0.43)and compares this one-year sample from 2,323 races toa sample of 1,383,690 dirt races over a five-year period(at multiple levels of tracks) to come to his assessmentthat the report shows horses broke down "at asix-times greater rate" from 2009 to 2013 on dirt thansynthetic (0.33 vs. 2.08). Such a skewed analysis ishardly the stuff of a Nobel Prize in Economics, and doesa disservice to what should be an honest discussionabout the safety of our sport. While we can all see from the "law of large numbers"in The Jockey Club Report that the fatality rate overfive years on dirt appears to be 70% greater thansynthetics (2.08 vs.1.22), a look behind those numberspresents a more nuanced view than Mr. Drape wouldhave us believe. Some examples:$ Why is the fatality rate on Golden Gate's Tapetasurface over 80% higher than Presque Isle's Tapeta?(1.49/1000 vs .82/1000)$ Why is the rate on Del Mar's Polytrack surface 53%higher than Woodbine's same surface? (1.45/1000 vs..95/1000)$ Why is Gulfstream's rate on a dirt surface 75%higher than Saratoga's dirt? (1.72/1000 vs. 98/1000)$ And interestingly, when comparing two of ourpremier meets, comparable in size and number of racingdays, why is Keeneland's rate of .97/1000 onsynthetics equal to Saratoga's rate of .98/1000 on dirt? By now you get my point; the safety issue iscomplex, taking into account a variety of factors suchas racetrack maintenance, weather and a myriad ofother components. At this critical juncture in our sport's history, anhonest dialogue is needed, not a result-oriented,skewed analysis of an important issue by Mr. Drape. Never let those statistics get in the way of a goodstory.

SO IT=S ROOT, ROOT, ROOT FOR THE...BESTHORSE? By Drew Rauso While the first day of spring didn=t immediately castoff its cold winter brethren, we the people of this PolarVortex=d winter were certainlyhappy to leave the icy conditionsbehind us. Suffice to say when the Areal@first day of spring arrived severalweeks later, just this pastweekend, in the form of MajorLeague Baseball Opening Day,there was such an overjoyedreaction that there was aChange.org petition requestingthe day be made into a nationalholiday. ABaseball=s back!@ Right? The sport, for decades and maybe even a century, has been this nation=s pastime. You ask Chevy, Atheofficial vehicle of the MLB,@ to make a commercial andthey resurrect a 1970=s tune ABaseball, Hot Dogs, ApplePie and Chevrolet.@ Take that little example however you see fit, but thetruth remains that baseball was revered, and that is thekey word: was. Football is this country=s new national sport, and newis an understatement. According to the Harris Poll, a study conducted yearlyto document adults= favorite sports, the NFL attracted35% of the participants to the MLB=s meager 14%. This disparity hasn=t changed over the last threedecades; MLB has dropped from 23% in 1985 to thisyear=s 14%, with the NFL never below 24%. So, does that mean game over for all sports notcentered around bashing your opponent=s head in? No, it certainly doesn=t. Football has its own problems to deal with, differentfrom baseball and possibly more threatening; the sportinjures people at an incredibly alarming rate. Careers last several years, not several decades, andmore and more former players are diagnosed with headinjuries every year. I don=t know about you, but if the President of theUnited States publicly stated his children will never playyour sport, I would sound the alarm. All of which brings us to the final stretch: horseracing has a fantastic chance to make its mark on thegeneral public of this country. First, a comparison is in order. A day at the track and a day at the ballpark are notso inherently different at the core. I know this is simplifying matters, but for argument=ssake, let it be for now.

A day game at Citi Field: the sun is shining, you maywalk around outside the stadium for a while, tailgate inthe parking lot before the gates open, eat food, drinkbeer and enjoy being outside. Now this part is reserved for Mets fans, a not-so-eliteclub that I just so happento be a part of: once thegame starts, many timesthere is not an incrediblelevel of attention to thegame, for whateverreason, the long nature ofthe sport, the standstillaspect of many of theplayers, whatever. Being at the ballpark isas much a socialgathering as anywhere else, conversation is welcomedlike Sofia Vergara entering a party, and the sportprovides a backdrop for a nice afternoon. Looking at a day at the track (I am speaking on behalfof my experience, that of a casual observer frequentingthe track with friends, so as to emulate what wouldhope to be the general public), I see many similarities. You are outside, with friends, eating, drinking makingconversation. The sport provides the backdrop, andwhen the races go off, conversation is for a momentsuspended, as everyone is bonded by their fascinationof such majestic animals performing at an incrediblyhigh level. The similarities are hard to miss, and with thepositive notes there are of course negative ones aswell. Baseball in all of its glory in the >80s and >90s andearly 2000s was a power show, an entertainment formbasking in its own gargantuan pride, with mammothhome runs left and right and players so big they lookedlike bodybuilders. Of course we now know the reason behind this darkheyday, and steroids= uglyhead is slowly getting pushedinto the underworld, alongwith the Alex Rodriguezs,Jose Cansecos and playersof today. The Steroid Era is a drivingforce in the decreasingpopularity of baseball; thefans just cannot trust playersanymore, and sadly, thisseems to be a pattern inprofessional sports, i.e. Lance Armstrong and therecent PETA case. For horse racing to truly enter the world of mostpopular sports in this country again (and this goes forany sport), people need to trust the faces of theindustry. In an effort to regain their fans= trust, look at baseballand Bud Selig=s administration; the crackdown onplayers after the Biogenesis debacle is in full effect withAlex Rodriguez=s 211 game suspension, along withRyan Braun=s 65 games and Melky Cabrera=s 50 games, among others. TDN Blog cont. While it is yet to be seen what happens of A-Rod,there is a general level of disgust with the player and arespect for the league because it has not backed downagainst one of the most powerful people in the sport. I asked several college classmates about what theythought of Steve Asmussen=s scandal, and theresounding reply was, AIsn=t that a commonoccurrence?@ (Needless to say this conversation took place onlyafter I agreed to listen to The Chainsmokers= songA#SELFIE@, which is a different and entirely morefrustrating commentary on my generation, but Idigress.) Even though the statement is clearly not true, itraises flags about public opinion of racing. While Asmussen will continue to train horses, hisreputation has taken a hit, and the industry shouldmake it a priority to keep horses clean so as to provethe Acommon occurrence@ belief wrong. The parallels are obvious. So how can the horseracing industry reclaim its integrity? Because without it,there is much less hope of attracting a broaderaudience. However, the headline, AHorse Racing IntegrityRecaptured@ does not lend itself to breaking news, so tograb the attention of the nation, something much moredirect is needed. Enter Secretariat #2, a new superstar, a face of thesport that captivates millions and captures the hearts ofthe country. Completely aware that once-in-a-lifetime stars areexactly that, I am merely saying that through thisexample, in which a new darling horse breaks out intothe field and serves as a headline for the sport, there isa strong possibility of enhanced awareness andpopularity of racing. One breakout star combined with the timing of othersports= problems, could spell success for horse racing ingetting people to admire the sheer beauty of the sport, but for getting the most people to the track? Show off what the sport can offer besides the actualrace, and a day at the track may become much moremarketable, plus there=s the possibility to win money, and any young person would love that scenario.A final example is a tennis match. Go to the U.S. Open, and you will find tons of sponsorship stands and tentsoutside the stadium with games, prizes, activities andmore, all while the matches are going on. While the ticket is still for a tennis match, there is somuch more to do, and the same can and should beapplied to horse racing marketing. Enough of my ranting, see you next week.

Archives: At the track with Mickey Rooney He will later say, “There isnothing wrong with a second childhood,” but the first thing MickeyRooney says is, “Call me Mickey.” Rick Kogan, Chicago Tribune.
