AO1 Develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding of sources.

Research and analyse the work of other artists and carrying out primary research, all of which is relevant to your theme.

AO2 Refine work by exploring ideas, selecting and experimenting with appropriate media, materials, techniques and processes.

Develop and refine your ideas by experimenting with techniques which suit your intentions.

AO3 Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions as work progresses.

Completing drawings, planning of your work, linking ideas, and carrying out primary research, all of which is relevant to your theme.

AO4 Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and demonstrates understanding of visual language.

Create a final piece that ties together all of your previous work.

Formal ElementsThere are 7 formal elements in Art and these form the visual language of Art.

Line

Tonal Value

Texture

Shape/pattern

Space

Colour

In year 10, you will continue to develop your knowledge of the formal elements, while also learning about composition.

GCSE Assessment Objectives

We want you to start learning about and understanding the way that the art GCSE is structured.

In year 10, you will learn the process of making Art using the assessment objectives as guidance. There are 4 Assessment Objectives to meet, which are:

You have different graded pencils for different purposes.  A HB pencil has a hard lead and is suitable for drawing outlines and adding fine details, this is considered a middle pencil.

B pencils have softer lead and the marks are darker, this is good for shading.

H/F pencils have a harder lead and make much lighter marks. These are good for finer

lines.

PENCIL GRADES

In this box, draw an object using a Fine, delicate, thin line. Draw using a light toned line.

In this box, draw an object using a bold, heavy, thick line. Draw using a darker toned line.

Keep Practicing how to hold

your pencil.I know, it sounds crazy, right? But there are right and wrong ways to hold your pencil.

You hold your pencil near the lead and rest your hand on the paper for control. This gives you a more accurate mark and is good for creating an outline.

Line weight is the visual lightness, darkness or heaviness within a drawing. You can create different line weights through changing the pressure you apply to your pencil. You can try creating different weighted lines by holding your pencil like this.

In the box below, practice drawing some different lines holding your pencil in this way. (use the example to help you)

Pressing lightly vs pressing harder

Holding your pencil looser with the side of your pencil flat to the paper create a softer, wider line. This is good for shading.

In the box below, practice holding your pencil on its side to use a shading technique. (see the example)

TONE, DEPTHUse of depth in tone can make a 2D object appear 3D.

Using a range of tones, shade this shape to look like the shape on the left.

Using a range of tones, shade this circle to look like the sphere on the right.

Form refers to either an objects overall physical shape and the different elements that make up a 3D shape.

You can show an objects form through use of highlights and shadows in a 2D drawing making it appear 3D.

FORM

You can see that this drawing of the objects below shows accurate form as it looks 3D.

Copy the composition an shade it in accordingly, to match the tonal range in the image.

Directional shading is where you follow the outline of the object while shading. You should shade an object to show the direction of the light source.

Perfect your Observational Skills

In the space below, draw the ice cream, using directional shading to create a realistic drawing. There are lots of folds and creases so think about the shadows and highlights.

CONTOURSContour refers to creating LINES that OUTLINE the change of tone within an

object and show the objects form.

Here you can see contour lines being used to describe the form of the circle.

This example demonstrates how contour lines can be used as a way of mark-making to show the form of the fruit.

This example is much more complex – you can see how the directions of the lines change to show the different folds and creases of this hand. Practice your contour shading in this

space below by sketching the vegetables using contour lines.

There isn’t just one way of drawing. There are other methods you can follow to enable you to create fun and interesting drawings. These ways of drawing are really important in developing your observation skills.

DIFFERENT DRAWING ACTIVITIES

Blind drawing

Drawing without looking.

Continuous line

Drawing without taking your pencil off of the paper.

BLIND DRAWINGSelect a random object in your home. This could be anything from a bottle of pop to a shoe.

Place the object in front of you where you can clearly see it and all of its detail.

In the space below, draw your object WITHOUT looking at the page! This means you only look at your object. Don’t worry if you lose your place with your drawing. You can see from the examples on the previous page that this outcome will be quite unusual!

CONTINUOUS LINE DRAWINGSelect another random object in your home. Pick something different to your previous object.

Place the object in front of you where you can clearly see it and all of its detail.

In the space below, draw your object WITHOUT taking your pencil off of the page! This means you will have to keep looking at your object to make sure you are drawing every detail, every line, as accurately as you can!

Artists: Caroline Grohs

Art collection called: Masquerade.

Caroline Grohs is a 23-year old graphic designer from Germany who had studied communication and graphic design at the Institution of Graphics. She has been working as a freelancer since 2010.

Draw over the photograph below using a black and blue biro pen. Use the artists example on the previous page to help you. Think about the structure of the face to create your contour lines. Alter the gap of the lines so that they are closer together where the areas dip in and further apart when the bones structure protrudes/comes out.

Line and Pattern

Draw over the photograph below using pencil first and then go over in black and blue biro pen. Use the artists example on this page to help you. Think about the thickness and thinness of the drawn lines; use different width of pens tips (broad and fine). Make sure that your lines are evenly spaced out and that you control the pen/pencil to achieve clear, even lines. Draw off the image and onto the paper with the hair and clothing decoration/detail.

STILL LIFE DRAWINGStill life drawing is a type of drawing that artists do where they draw the objects that are in front of them. They arrange the objects how they would like them to look and then they draw them from life.

This can be much more difficult than drawing from an image as you do not have the grid to help you!

In the box to the right, practice drawing an object that is in front of you. This can be any object, big or small, whether it is a TV remote or a pencil sharpener.

The key is to keep looking at your object. You should look at your object every couple of seconds, more than you look at the paper!

Page 18: arkvictoria.org Drawing... · Web viewResearch and analyse the work of other artists and carrying out primary research, all of which is relevant to your theme. AO 2 Refine work by

To help you develop your still life drawing skills, you must draw an image of a still life using the grid method. This will help you to notice the shapes of the objects more, and the spaces between and around the objects – this helps to determine if you have drawn your objects accurately.

On the next page is a grid for you to complete your drawing. Do this in pencil.

In the boxes below, using a pencil, add in the different tones you can pick out from the drawing. Use the shading technique for this.

In the grid below copy the skull draw above. Do this in pencil.

These still life studies look realistic because of the artists use of tone and texture but also because of the use of scale and proportion.

Find 3 objects that are personal to you and put them together to create a still life.

Draw these objects using a pencil and focus on the scale and proportion. Look at how big the objects are in relation to one another. Once you are happy with your base drawing, add tone. *you can flip this page to draw if you wish*
