Council of Catholic Women (CCW)

Every new snowflake comes to the earthas a picture of our Saviour's birth,

because they are sent from up aboveand remind us of God's care and love.

Each one is so intricate and smallbecause Christ sees the details of us all,

and just as two are never the same,He knows and calls us each by name.

Snowflakes gently cover the world in whiteand hide what's unlovely from our sight,

showing us how He covers our sinand gives us His grace when we come to Him,So may every snowflake bring Chist to mind

and in every bit of white may you finda reason to celebrate anew

and a reminder of His love for you. By Kalley Gerth

A Word from Fr. Andrew

Welcome to all who are visiting this holiday weekend. Itis only about every 6 years when the 4th Sunday ofAdvent comes on December 24th. We have such anopportunity to extend the celebration of Christmas overthe next few weeks. Next Sunday we celebrate the HolyFamily of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. On January 1st, wecelebrate the maternity of Mary (Mary, Mother of God).On January 7th we celebrate the Epiphany, and on thefollowing day (January 8th), the Christmas seasonconcludes with the celebration of the Baptism pf Jesus.May our celebration be within our hearts and witnessedto those around us.

Many thanks continue to go out to all who have been sogenerous with the Sunday giving. Our parish & schoolcontinues to be blessed in so many ways by all of you. Also, please know you are still invited to consider inmaking a donation towards the forthcoming project withinthe school building. The updates to bring the buildinginto the current fire code are important. Thus far wehave received over $35,000.00. Many thanks to thedonors. For all who are interested in the plans tocontinue to keep our parish and school financially healthyand successful, forthcoming information will be providedin the near future.

Beginning next weekend, we will be launching a newinitiative for each Sunday mass. With so many generous'hearts at each mass, we also want to recognize thegenerous hearts of the children at mass. A specialopportunity will be provided at each mass so each childmay have the opportunity to place a donation in thecollection basket. They will be able to place theirdonation in a special basket to be placed near the altar. This will take place during the time of the regularcollection, and the amount will be found in the bulletin. Iam sure this gesture will bring many blessings to ourparish.

Please plan on joining us for the 10:30 am mass onJanuary 28th. We will be honored to welcome AuxiliaryBishop Andrew Cozzens to St. Anne's. He hasgraciously accepted the invitation to come for mass, aswell as to help launch the beginning of Catholic SchoolsWeek. Following mass, there will be a reception at theschool.

Have a great week and God Bless!

Faith Formation Happenings

When was Jesus born??We don't have a birth certificate for Jesus. In fact, the gospels are silent as to the date of Christ's exact birth. The

two gospels that do speak about the year contradict each other. Matthew 2:1 states that Jesus wasborn "in the days of King Herod," (the Great) who died in March or April of the year that we wouldcall 4 BC/I CE (OR BCE-BEFORE THE COMMON ERA/CE-COMMON ERA). Luke 2:2 states that Jesus was bornwhen Quirinius was governor of Syria, that is, not until the year that we would call 6 AD (OR COMMONERA). So, we don't know scientifically the year of the Savior's birth.

What about the date—December 25? It's possible that this is Jesus' birthday. We know that some churcheskept December 25 as the solemn feast of the nativity very early on. Maybe they knew something that we don't. Somethink that there are other reasons why December 25 has been kept as Jesus' birthday at least since the year 336.Some scholars think that Christians began celebrating the birth of Christ on December 25 because it was the paganfeast of the Unconquered Sun, proclaimed by the Roman emperor in the year 274. According to the calendar at thetime, December 25 would have been the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, when hours of sunlight stop"shrinking." (December 21 is the solstice on modern calendars.)Another group of scholars think that the early Christians thought: "The gospels say nothing of Christ's birthday, butJohn the Baptist, as usual, points to the truth. He says 'Christ must increase, but I must decrease.' (John 3:30) Nowwe can figure out Jesus' birthday!" John the Baptist was hinting that his birthday was the summer solstice—thelongest and brightest day of the year—June 25 on the old calendar. (In fact, we still celebrate the birth of the Baptiston June 24!) After all, John is the brightest and strongest of the prophets to foretell Christ's coming. So this meansthat John would have been conceived on September 25.Luke 1:26 tells us that John was conceived six months prior to Jesus. So Jesus was conceived on March 25.

Sadly, there are still those today who won't believe that Jesus even existed without irrefutable proof. But wewho are baptized are open to ways of knowing truths bigger than official documents and laboratoryevidence can tell.We learn in our liturgy to sense divine action in human history. We know that we can trust our Church calendar, waiting in Advent, rejoicing at Christmas, joyfully celebrating God in the flesh—our flesh—born into our world, redeeming even our calendars and giving us holidays to cherish. Let us celebrate this Christmas with a newfoundjoy rejoicing that "Today is born our Savior, Jesus Christ the Lord!" Merry Christmas!!
